You can restore supported settings and account information on a new Fire tablet, redownload Amazon content, and move photos and files through separate cloud or storage methods. There is no guaranteed one-step transfer of everything, and app data depends on the app and Fire OS. Keep your old tablet until you have checked the important items on the new one.
What transfers—and what needs a separate step?
Amazon’s Backup & Restore backs up supported settings and some Amazon account and device information. It is separate from photo and file storage, and it does not guarantee that every app’s private data will return. Amazon-purchased content saved to your account’s cloud can generally be downloaded again; photos, local files, contacts, and calendars may need their own route.

Use the method that matches the item:
| What you want to move | Route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Supported settings and account/device information | Backup & Restore | Restore is limited to supported data; the backup runs while the old tablet is idle and connected to Wi-Fi. Amazon Backup and Restore FAQ |
| Amazon-purchased apps and other cloud content | Sign into the same Amazon account and download from your library | Redownloading an app or item does not guarantee its login state, offline downloads, or private app data. Amazon storage guidance |
| Photos and videos already uploaded | Amazon Photos | Sign into the same account to access uploaded media. Items saved only on the old tablet are not thereby uploaded. Amazon Photos upload instructions |
| Local photos, videos, and files | Portable microSD storage, if both tablets support it | Requires compatible devices and a card configured as portable storage; some protected app media will not transfer. Amazon microSD guidance |
| Contacts and calendar entries | Export files, then import them in a destination app | Contacts export as .vcf and calendars as .ics; steps depend on Fire OS, and import steps depend on the destination app. Amazon Fire data export instructions |
Prepare the old Fire tablet
- Connect the old tablet to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Device Options > Backup & Restore and turn on Backup & Restore. The menu path or wording can vary by model and Fire OS.
- Leave the tablet idle and connected to Wi-Fi long enough for a backup cycle. Amazon says Backup & Restore runs when the tablet is idle and on Wi-Fi; an enabled switch alone does not confirm that a recent backup has completed. Amazon Backup and Restore FAQ
Set up the new tablet and restore supported settings
- During setup, sign in with the same Amazon account used on the old Fire tablet.
- If setup offers a restore option, select the relevant backup. Amazon describes backup data as a way to help set up a new device, but the available screens and choices are not documented as a universal flow for every model.
- After setup, check the settings you rely on rather than assuming every preference was restored.
Reinstall apps and redownload Amazon content
Open the Appstore or your account’s app library on the new tablet and download the apps you need. For purchased content stored in your Amazon account’s cloud, select it for download again. Removing an archived item from the device does not delete it from the account. Amazon storage guidance
Reinstallation is not the same as restoring an app’s internal state. You may need to sign in again, download offline content again, or use the app’s own sync or restore option.

Know the limits of app-data restoration
Automatic app backup on Fire OS 7 and later is conditional, not a promise for every app. Amazon’s developer documentation says qualifying applications must target API 23 or higher, and backup settings and the app developer’s configuration also matter. The documented limit is 25 MB per application per device. That quota is an app-backup limit, not a general transfer allowance, and the documentation does not establish which consumer apps will successfully restore. Amazon Fire OS 7 developer documentation
For each important app, open it on the new tablet, sign in, and look for its own cloud sync or restore function. If the app has no such option and its data was not included in eligible backup, you may need to set it up again.

Move photos and videos
If the photos are already in Amazon Photos
Sign into Amazon Photos with the same account on the new tablet to access media that was uploaded. To upload items from the old tablet, Amazon’s app instructions describe opening Amazon Photos, going to its profile or settings area, choosing manual upload, selecting files, and uploading them. Labels may change between app versions. Amazon Photos upload instructions

Copy local files with a portable microSD card
Amazon’s help says Fire tablets from the 5th Generation onward support microSD cards, but support and steps depend on the model. Configure the card as portable storage if you intend to move files between devices; internal storage is not the same transfer route. Amazon describes portable storage as “Best for transferring content such as files, photos, and videos between devices.” Amazon microSD guidance
- Amazon states Fire tablets support FAT32.
- Kindle and Prime Video apps support only portable storage.
- Some copyrighted movies or music stored by apps may not be transferable through the card.
- Kindle books stored on the card are accessible on another device only when it uses the same Amazon account.
Copy the files to the card, safely remove it, then insert it into the compatible new tablet and access the files there. The card is a way to copy supported files, not to clone installed apps or protected app data.

Export contacts and calendar entries
If contacts or calendar entries are not available through an account sync, export them from the old tablet before retiring it. Amazon documents contacts export as a .vcf file and calendar export as an .ics file. The export steps differ between Fire OS 5-or-earlier and Fire OS 6-or-later. Amazon Fire data export instructions
Save the exported file somewhere accessible to the new tablet, then use the contacts or calendar app’s import function. The import path depends on the destination app; an exported file by itself does not automatically populate every account or app.

Verify the new tablet before wiping the old one
- Open essential apps and confirm you can sign in and find any needed data.
- Check that important Amazon purchases can be downloaded.
- Open Amazon Photos or the chosen file location and confirm the media you need is present.
- Check contacts and calendar entries, including any exported files you imported.
- Confirm copied files are readable from the new tablet before formatting or reusing the card.
Amazon says backup data is intended to remain available for at least a year after the last device use, but that should not replace checking your new tablet before erasing or trading in the old one. Amazon Backup and Restore FAQ
