It is an integration and testing project—not a network product or a replacement for every infrastructure or orchestration system. Its value is reducing the effort and risk of assembling and validating the software stack needed to run virtualized and cloud-native network functions.
What OPNFV is—and what it is not
OPNFV stands for Open Platform for NFV. It is a Linux Foundation open-source integration project that brings together upstream software used in network infrastructure, then deploys and tests those components in documented configurations. The intended users include enterprises and service providers adopting virtualized network functions.

The project’s defining work has three parts: integrating upstream projects, testing the resulting stack against NFV-specific requirements, and contributing upstream changes where carrier-grade needs are not yet met. In other words, OPNFV is a community for assembling and qualifying reference platforms, not one proprietary network operating system or a standalone commercial NFV product.

How OPNFV contributes to network transformation
It turns separate components into tested scenarios
A transformation program often has to connect infrastructure management, networking, data-plane technologies, and management-and-orchestration (MANO) software that come from different projects. OPNFV describes combinations of upstream components as scenarios, providing a more concrete starting point than evaluating each component in isolation. Its platform overview describes OpenStack as a foundation for virtual infrastructure management, Kubernetes as the infrastructure manager intended for cloud-native network functions, and a range of SDN controllers and forwarding technologies that can be composed into reference solutions.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
This can help teams identify interoperability problems earlier and make configurations easier to reproduce. It does not mean every project, vendor implementation, or MANO stack is included in every OPNFV release. Teams need to check the target release’s scenario and component documentation against their own architecture.
It adds deployment, integration, and test automation
OPNFV provides testing frameworks, deployment automation, release documentation, and continuous-integration work, including cross-community CI. System-level testing is important because a network function may work on its own yet fail when combined with a particular infrastructure, networking, or orchestration configuration. OPNFV’s purpose is to test the integrated stack, not to certify every possible deployment.
Documentation includes installation, user and configuration guides, release notes, testing guides, CI material, and developer guidance. These resources can help a team move from evaluating individual projects to repeating a known deployment and test process.

It addresses operational and carrier-grade concerns
Telecom infrastructure has requirements beyond getting a function to start. OPNFV release work has addressed monitoring, service assurance, networking, data-plane acceleration, IPv6, maintenance intended to avoid VNF downtime, and connections to heterogeneous switches. Those topics matter when a platform must be operated and maintained, not just demonstrated.
The existence of related project work should not be read as proof that a particular release meets a specific operator’s production targets. Validate the available tests, their results, and the hardware and software conditions against the workload you intend to run.
How OPNFV relates to VNFs and cloud-native network functions
Traditional virtual network functions (VNFs) run as virtual machines on virtualized infrastructure. Cloud-native network functions (CNFs) run as containers on Kubernetes and are designed around cloud-native operating patterns such as automation, scalability, and resilience. The two approaches have different runtime and operations requirements; adopting CNFs is not simply a matter of packaging a VNF differently.

OPNFV’s cloud-native work has included Kubernetes scenarios and supporting operational technologies. For example, the Linux Foundation’s 2018 description of the Fraser release named Istio/Envoy for service mesh, Fluentd for logging, OpenTracing with Jaeger for tracing, Prometheus for monitoring, and gRPC package management. These are examples of the technologies covered in that release, not a claim that every current OPNFV scenario uses them.

Fraser was announced in 2018 as OPNFV’s sixth platform release. The Linux Foundation reported that it expanded cloud-native NFV capabilities in nine projects, more than doubled the supported Kubernetes-based scenarios, and deployed two containerized VNFs. These are historical release-specific figures; they show the direction of that work at the time, not the maturity or breadth of the current documented release.
Have telecom operators used OPNFV?
Yes. The documented examples include operator workflows rather than merely general interest in the project:

- Orange: used OPNFV for NFV infrastructure (NFVI) and virtualized infrastructure manager (VIM) validation, VNF onboarding and validation, and network-service onboarding.
- China Mobile: used OPNFV in its Telecom Integrated Cloud to continuously integrate, onboard, and test NFVI, VIM, and VNFs.
These examples establish that operators have used OPNFV in validation and onboarding activities. They do not establish that every operator uses it, that the deployments share the same architecture, or that an OPNFV scenario will meet a new program’s performance and availability requirements without further evaluation.

Check component versions, maintenance status, hardware support, test coverage, and the currency of the deployment instructions before treating a reference configuration as a current production blueprint. The stable Jerma documentation is a useful point of reference, but the available facts do not establish a newer release or a present-day support commitment.

How to evaluate OPNFV for a transformation program
Use OPNFV as an input to architecture and validation decisions, not as a substitute for them. Before adopting a scenario, answer these questions:
- Integration breadth: Which upstream infrastructure, networking, data-plane, and MANO projects are included in the exact release and scenario under consideration?
- Automation depth: Which deployment, continuous-integration, continuous-testing, and day-two monitoring tasks are automated, and which remain the operator’s responsibility?
- CNF fit: Are the Kubernetes scenarios and any service-mesh, observability, and lifecycle-management components mature enough for the intended network function?
- Performance and resilience: What tests cover networking, acceleration, IPv6, service assurance, maintenance, and the required workload? Confirm test conditions and results rather than inferring production performance from the presence of a test framework.
- Operator comparability: Do examples such as Orange’s or China Mobile’s onboarding and validation work resemble the target architecture, operating model, and scale?
- Organizational readiness: Does the team have cloud-native and DevOps skills, clear ownership, executive sponsorship, and an incremental adoption plan?
The Linux Foundation’s OPNFV guidance emphasizes setting clear goals, selecting use cases, developing skills organically, adopting agile practices, assigning dedicated teams, securing executive sponsorship, and sharing knowledge. Those conditions matter because a reference platform can reduce integration work, but it cannot supply the organization, operational processes, or service-specific engineering needed to run a network.
How to participate or inspect the platform
OPNFV documentation says participation is open to anyone. Prospective users can start with the stable documentation, installation and user guides, release notes, and testing guides to see what is actually available for a given release. The community lists a wiki, mailing lists, project calls, technical steering meetings, and community test labs as participation routes. Access to developer tools may require a Linux Foundation account.

A practical first step is to choose one network-function use case, identify the matching documented scenario, and compare its components and tests with the intended deployment. That makes gaps in hardware support, integration, operations, or team skills visible before expanding to additional services.
