The distinction matters: Stability AI’s prompt restrictions did not remove training material, and the user-created LoRA was not a literal reinsertion of Rutkowski’s work into Stability AI’s original training dataset.
What happened between Greg Rutkowski and Stable Diffusion?
In 2023, artists including Greg Rutkowski asked Stability AI to remove their work from its models, according to Futurism’s Aug. 2, 2023 report. The reporting said Stability AI later made it harder for users to prompt its product for images in the style of specific artists. Futurism stressed that this change affected product behavior; it was not the same as removing training material.

A separate development came from a Civitai user known as Lykon, who made a LoRA intended to reproduce Rutkowski’s style. Decrypt reported that the user-made adaptation was shared through Civitai in 2023. A LoRA is a separately distributed model adaptation, not an edit to Stability AI’s original training dataset. The accounts do not establish that Rutkowski’s work or name was literally put back into that dataset.
What did the LoRA creator say?
Both Futurism and Decrypt quoted Lykon saying: “If he contacts me asking for removal, I’ll remove this.” That was an offer by the creator, not evidence that Rutkowski made such a request or that the LoRA was taken down.

Futurism also reported Rutkowski’s concerns about AI-generated images, quoting him from earlier interviews. From a MIT Technology Review interview, it quoted him saying, “I probably won’t be able to find my work out there because [the internet] will be flooded with AI art,” followed by, “That’s concerning.” From a BBC interview, Futurism quoted him: “All that we’ve been working on for so many years,” followed by “has been taken from us so easily with AI.”
How could an artist-style LoRA change what users can generate?
The dispute involves three different layers that can be confused:

- Prompt restrictions: A company can change how its product responds to prompts naming particular artists. That does not, by itself, remove anything from the model’s training data.
- Training data: Removing works from a training set is a separate action. The 2023 coverage did not describe Stability AI’s prompt change as a removal of training material.
- User-created adaptations: A separately shared LoRA can influence a model’s output. Platform prompt restrictions on a company’s own product do not necessarily control adaptations distributed by users elsewhere.
The available reporting documents the Rutkowski-style LoRA and the company’s product change, but does not establish the full behavior of every model version, dataset, or copy of the adaptation.
How widely was Rutkowski’s name used in prompts?
Decrypt reported in 2023 that Rutkowski’s name had been requested more than 400,000 times, more often than Picasso’s or Leonardo da Vinci’s. The article did not establish the measurement method, so the figure should be understood as Decrypt’s reported count, not an independently audited total.

Is the LoRA still available, and what do later platform policies say?
Its current availability is not established by the 2023 reports or the later policy materials reviewed here. Civitai’s May 22, 2025 announcement said the platform would remove models and images depicting real-world individuals. That announcement does not say whether this particular LoRA remains available, or whether a model imitating an artist’s style falls within the policy’s scope.
Stability AI’s 2025 Terms of Service include provisions for Brand Studio: trainers are responsible for their LoRAs and outputs, and shared LoRAs may be removed by the trainer or Stability AI. Those terms apply to that service; they do not establish rules for every Stable Diffusion model or independent hosting platform, nor do they resolve the 2023 dispute.

Does the dispute settle whether style imitation is legal?
No. The reporting describes artists’ objections, a product-level prompt restriction, and a creator’s offer to remove a user-made LoRA. It does not resolve whether training on particular works or imitating an artistic style violates copyright or another law. The dispute should not be treated as a court ruling or a settled legal determination.
