To turn on Lossless Audio, open Apple Music’s audio-quality settings, enable Lossless Audio, then choose a quality for streaming and downloads separately. The menu differs by device; the steps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Android are below.
Turn on Lossless Audio on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Turn on Lossless Audio.
- Choose the quality you want under Cellular Streaming or Wi-Fi Streaming, and separately under Downloads. Available lossless options are Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless.
Menu wording can vary with the operating-system version. Apple’s current instructions are in its About lossless audio in Apple Music article.

Enable it on Mac, Windows, or Android
Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Choose Music > Settings > Playback. Some versions use Preferences instead of Settings.
- Turn on Lossless Audio, then choose the streaming and download quality separately.
Windows
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Choose Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback.
- Turn on Lossless audio, then set streaming and download quality.
Android
- Open Apple Music and tap More > Settings > Audio Quality.
- Turn on Lossless.
- Set the streaming and download quality independently.

Apple Music offers High Quality, Lossless, and Hi-Res Lossless options. Lossless settings apply separately to streaming and downloaded music, so you can use a lower setting on mobile data and a higher one for Wi-Fi or downloads.

These are format ceilings, not a guarantee that every track is available at that resolution or that your connected equipment can reproduce it. Apple says much of its catalog is available in ALAC, from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz. Apple does not publish a numeric data-per-hour estimate in the cited guidance, so the actual data and storage increase should be treated qualitatively.
Lossless uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). Apple describes lossless compression as preserving all of the original data. See Apple’s explanation of lossless audio.

What headphones and equipment work?
Bluetooth is not a lossless connection. AirPods and most wireless Beats headphones use AAC over Bluetooth, so enabling Lossless in Apple Music does not make Bluetooth playback lossless. Apple states that Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless in its iPhone playback guide.

On iPhone and iPad, playing above 48 kHz requires an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC). DAC requirements vary on other platforms; check your device or computer specifications before buying one. Not every listener needs new hardware: the right setup depends on the connection and the sample rate you want to play.

Make existing downloads lossless and check playback
Music downloaded before you enabled Lossless does not automatically convert. Delete the existing download, then download the track or album again with Lossless enabled and your preferred download quality selected.
Look for the Lossless icon on an album page or in playback controls to check availability. The icon indicates that lossless audio is available for the content; the track, selected quality, and playback hardware still affect what you hear.

Regional availability and settings differences
Apple Music availability and menu labels can vary by region and operating-system version. If a setting is missing, confirm that Apple Music is available in your region and consult Apple’s current platform instructions: About lossless audio in Apple Music, Play lossless audio in Music on iPhone, and Apple Music on Windows.
