Hannah Foxwell’s QCon London session, “The Reinvention of the Dev Team,” makes a case for reconsidering familiar team structures as software development and developers’ work change. Its practical direction is to return to fundamentals, focus on outcomes, and evaluate team composition—not to adopt a proven replacement formula.
What team structure is Foxwell questioning?
Foxwell says she would have advocated for a “Balanced Team” a few years earlier: one product manager, one product designer, one engineering manager, and four to eight developers. That is the model she describes from her own past practice, not a benchmark established by comparative data.

Her point is that this familiar arrangement no longer works as it once did in a rapidly changing software-development environment. The session’s official abstract does not argue that any particular role has become unnecessary; it raises the question of whether the conventional composition still serves the work and its desired results.
What does “reinventing” the team mean here?
Foxwell’s stated approach is to revisit fundamentals, refocus on outcomes, and examine options for evolving team composition. That shifts the discussion from preserving a standard headcount or copying a fashionable org chart to asking what the team needs to deliver and how its structure supports that work.

- Dual-Brain Hybrid Power: Combines the Qualcomm Dragonwing QRB2210 MPU (Quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 @ 2.0 GHz CPU, Adreno GPU, AI acceleration) and the real-time, low-power STM32U585 MCU for advanced applications like object recognition, voice commands, and motion detection.
- AI & Linux Capabilities: Unlocks AI-powered vision and sound solutions; runs Linux Debian OS for coding in Python and supports the Arduino ecosystem with libraries and Sketches; quick start with Arduino App Lab.
- Advanced Features: Equipped with 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal for single-board computer (SBC) mode, running multiple simultaneous high-level processes, more complex AI or ML models, extensive logs. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
- Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
- Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
- Start with outcomes: clarify what the team is responsible for achieving.
- Reassess composition: consider whether the current mix of responsibilities and roles helps deliver those outcomes as the work changes.
- Evaluate options rather than assume a template: Foxwell says she will discuss approaches she has seen work, along with what she is ready to discard and what she wants to keep.
These are the direction and themes stated in the abstract, not a detailed implementation sequence or a checklist attributed to Foxwell.
Does the session offer a proven replacement model?
No. Foxwell explicitly describes the presentation as exploration, saying she does not offer a proven strategy for navigating the change. The abstract signals uncertainty rather than claiming that one new team configuration works for every organization.

It also does not name the specific alternative structures, provide a full transcript, quantify AI’s effect on productivity, or recommend a coding product. QCon’s topic labels include AI, organizational design, fast flow, SRE, and product engineering, but those classifications do not establish recommendations on their own. The session is listed for Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 1:35 p.m. GMT; QCon’s speaker profile lists a 50-minute duration.
How can a team apply the idea without guessing?
Use the session’s outcome-and-composition lens to frame a local decision, while treating any proposed reorganization as a hypothesis to test rather than a universal answer.

- Single core ARM Cortex-A7 32-bit core, integrated with NEON and FPU
- Built in Micro's self-developed 4th generation NPU, with high computational accuracy and support for mixed quantization of int4, int8, and int16. Among them, int8 has a computing power of 0.5 TOPS and int4 has a computing power of up to 1.0 TOPS
- Built in self-developed 3rd generation ISP3.2, supports 4 million pixels, and supports various image enhancement and correction algorithms such as HDR, WDR, and multi-level denoisin
- It has powerful encoding performance, supports intelligent encoding, adapts to save bit rates according to the scene, and saves more than 50% of the bit rate compared to conventional CBR mode, making the captured images high-definition, smaller in size, and doubling the storage space
- The design with built-in RISC-V MCU supports low-power fast startup, 250ms fast capture, and simultaneous loading of AI model library, enabling facial recognition to be completed within 1 second
- Name the outcome. State what the team must deliver or improve, rather than starting with a preferred headcount.
- Map the current composition to the work. Identify which responsibilities and roles contribute to that outcome and where coordination or ownership is unclear.
- Describe the change you expect to matter. If AI or another shift alters the work, specify what is different before changing roles or reporting lines.
- Choose a limited adjustment and observe it. Decide what evidence would show whether the change helps the stated outcome, then revisit the arrangement based on what happens.
These prompts are a practical way to apply the abstract’s emphasis; they are not a process or validated intervention prescribed by the session.

The central claim is a reason to reconsider a once-familiar team pattern as the work changes. The grounded takeaway is to return to fundamentals, center outcomes, and examine composition options with an open mind. The abstract does not establish that balanced teams are universally obsolete, that a specific replacement is superior, or that AI produces a particular productivity gain.
