The Outlast Trials is a cooperative PvE horror game that you can also play alone. To get oriented, learn what separates a full Trial from an MK-Challenge, what each loadout system does, and how to use the current in-game Trial board for progression. Rigs, Prescriptions, and Amps have distinct roles; the right choices depend on the activity and, in a group, how your loadouts work together.

Trials and MK-Challenges: what are you playing?

Red Barrels describes Trials as immersive, story-driven therapies. MK-Challenges are shorter therapies set in modified or redesigned areas. Programs group activities and rewards, while Variators can change Trial conditions and challenge. These definitions come from Red Barrels’ Early Access overview; the exact activities and board structure can change with updates. Red Barrels’ Early Access overview explains the original vocabulary.

For a new player, the practical distinction is that a Trial is the longer activity, while an MK-Challenge offers a shorter run. Check the current board to see which activities are available and how they fit into the active program.

How do Rigs, Prescriptions, and Amps differ?

System What it contributes How to think about it
Rigs Reusable tools for use during a Trial. Choose utility suited to the activity and coordinate with teammates where possible.
Prescriptions Character upgrades associated with physical and mental abilities. Consider which lasting character improvements matter to your play.
Amps Contraband that adds another loadout option later in progression. Treat it as a separate system from Rigs and Prescriptions; check the current game for availability and effects.

These are high-level descriptions from Red Barrels’ May 2023 Early Access systems overview, not a current item catalogue. The overview’s specific effects, costs, unlock rules, upgrade steps, and claims about how long upgrades remain active are historical; it does not establish their present-day details. Consult the live game interface rather than relying on older instructions. Red Barrels’ overview of Rigs, Prescriptions, Amps, and loadouts provides the original definitions.

How should a beginner choose a loadout?

Start with the Trial’s demands, then consider what utility you want from your Rig and which character upgrades suit your priorities. In a group, compare loadouts so that teammates can complement one another instead of everyone choosing in isolation. Playing alone means you do not have teammates to cover different roles, but the available sources do not establish that solo play is easier or harder.

Red Barrels’ overview recommends tailoring loadouts to a Trial or coordinating with teammates. It does not establish a current best build, universal Rig ranking, or recommended Amp combination. Because the game continues to receive updates, treat specific tier lists and build advice as version-dependent rather than permanent guidance.

How does progression work?

At launch, Red Barrels described Program Genesis as the straightforward route toward Rebirth, with Release Tokens leading to a Release Protocol. It also presented Program X and Program Ultra as later challenges. These are launch-era descriptions, not confirmation of the exact steps required in the current build. Red Barrels’ 1.0 launch announcement records that original framing.

For actionable progression, follow the current in-game Trial board and its listed requirements. The September 2026 roadmap confirms that the game is still being updated, but does not establish whether every launch-era requirement remains unchanged. Red Barrels’ September 4, 2026 Season 7.1 and roadmap announcement is the latest dated update context cited here.

Can you play solo or with friends?

Yes. The PlayStation listing describes play alone or in teams and specifies online play and up to four online players for the listed game. PlayStation’s listing for The Outlast Trials gives those platform details. Red Barrels’ Game Director Alex Charbonneau described the game as “a cooperative PvE experience where up to four players, known in-game as Reagents, participate in experiments that push their psyches to the absolute limit.” Charbonneau’s July 16, 2024 PlayStation Blog post provides that description.

Red Barrels announced cross-play at launch in March 2024, but its statement that cross-progression was not supported at that time is dated. If your group uses different platforms, or you need progress to carry between them, verify the current state for your platform before making plans. The launch announcement is the source for that historical cross-play context.

What has changed recently?

Red Barrels announced Season 7: Project Boneyard for July 14, 2026. Its announcement listed Prison Farm and “Locksock the Warden,” two MK-Challenges, Rig and Knife Customization, Loadout Presets, Mastery Tasks, and reworks to Escalation and Invasion. Red Barrels’ Season 7 announcement describes those announced additions.

On September 4, 2026, Red Barrels announced Season 7.1 for September 8 and a roadmap looking through the end of 2026. This establishes that the game remains active, not that every announced feature is still in precisely the same state on October 4, 2026. Check the live board and current interface for exact availability, effects, and progression.

Beginner checklist

  • Use the board to distinguish the available Trials, shorter MK-Challenges, and their program context.
  • Choose a Rig for the activity’s utility needs, not because an older guide calls it universally best.
  • Think of Prescriptions as a separate character-upgrade system and Amps as another loadout category; check their current details in game.
  • In a team, discuss complementary loadouts. If playing alone, make choices without assuming a teammate will cover another role.
  • Before grouping across platforms or relying on progression carrying between them, verify current platform support and account behavior.
