Steam’s official Steam Link app for VR headsets does not list Linux as a supported host operating system. Steam’s current headset requirements specify Windows 10 or newer, so the documented setup below applies to supported Windows PCs—not Linux. If you have a Linux computer, do not assume the headset app will pair or stream through the official route.
Can you use Steam Link with a Linux PC and a Quest headset?
Steam’s Steam Link requirements for VR describe a Windows host: the computer must run Steam and SteamVR, and the supported operating system is Windows 10 or newer. Linux is not listed. That means the official instructions do not establish a supported Linux-to-headset setup, whether the headset is a Quest or another model listed by Steam.

This is a support limitation, not proof that every unofficial workaround is impossible. However, the available Steam documentation does not provide verified Linux-specific installation steps or a supported alternative route. For a dependable setup, use a Windows 10-or-newer host that meets Steam’s requirements, or consult current authoritative instructions for any Linux alternative before relying on it.

How to set up Steam Link on a supported Windows PC
These are Steam’s documented steps for a supported host. They do not make Linux an officially supported host.
- Prepare the computer. Sign in to Steam and make sure Steam and SteamVR are installed on a Windows 10-or-newer PC.
- Connect both devices to the same network. Steam recommends a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network or better for the headset, with the computer connected by Ethernet when possible.
- Install Steam Link on the headset. Find the free Steam Link app in the headset’s store and install it.
- Pair the devices. Open Steam Link on the headset and follow its on-screen pairing instructions.
What hardware and network does Steam recommend?
Steam publishes these specifications for its VR headset app’s Windows setup. They are not verified Linux requirements.

- Wire the host computer to the router. Steam recommends a wired connection when possible to avoid adding wireless variability at the PC.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz for streaming. A Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router is Steam’s recommendation for the headset app, but buying a router cannot change the app’s listed Windows host requirement.
- Disable client or access-point isolation. Check the router settings if the headset and computer cannot discover or connect to each other.
- Check firewall and router rules. Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, TCP ports 27036 and 27037, and UDP ports 10400 and 10401 for VR streaming. Allowing the relevant traffic may help where local network rules block streaming.
- Reduce streaming quality if performance is unstable. Steam suggests trying Balanced or Fast, then using the performance overlay to identify variable network time.
- Check router firmware. Updating it may address network issues that affect streaming.
