What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: Steam Frame supports Linux PC titles as a content category, but Valve’s public documentation does not clearly confirm that a generic Linux desktop can stream games to the headset as a host. Those are separate compatibility questions. You can also use Steam Frame for supported standalone games without a PC.
What “Linux support” means for Steam Frame
Steam Frame runs SteamOS and supports more than one way to play. Valve describes it as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. In its Steamworks documentation, Valve lists Linux PC titles among the content execution models the device supports.

That statement concerns the games or content Steam Frame can run; it does not establish that a desktop Linux PC can act as the streaming host. The official material reviewed does not clearly confirm generic, non-SteamOS Linux host support or specify a supported Linux distribution, kernel, GPU, driver, or encoding setup. ValveSoftware’s Linux issue tracker includes an open request for clarification on generic Linux host support and adapter requirements, but that request is not an official compatibility answer.

Choose between standalone play and PC streaming
| Mode | What it means | Does it require a PC? |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone play | Run supported VR or non-VR games on Steam Frame itself. Valve says the device supports a growing number of standalone games. | No, for games that run on the headset. |
| PC streaming | Stream a Steam Library from a PC to Steam Frame. Valve describes this as the headset’s primary design use. | Yes. Whether a generic Linux desktop is an officially supported host is not clearly established in Valve’s public documentation reviewed here. |
Valve’s Steam Frame product page says the headset includes a plug-and-play 6GHz wireless adapter as a dedicated link for VR and non-VR streaming. That describes the wireless link, not a complete host compatibility checklist; it does not establish that the adapter removes other host or network requirements.

What to do if you want to stream from Linux
- Check whether the game needs a host PC. If it is available as a supported standalone experience, you can use it on Steam Frame without streaming.
- Separate game compatibility from host compatibility. Valve’s reference to Linux PC titles does not confirm that a generic Linux desktop can stream to the headset.
- Check Valve’s current SteamVR and SteamOS release notes. Requirements and beta advice can change, and the reviewed documentation does not provide a general Linux host setup checklist.
- Do not assume a distribution, kernel, driver, GPU, or network configuration is supported. The official material reviewed does not specify these for a generic Linux host. The included 6GHz adapter is the stated dedicated link, not proof of universal compatibility.
A dated SteamOS beta note about Error 17
In SteamVR beta notes dated October 1, 2026, Valve recommended that Steam Frame users also opt into SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher to reduce Error 17 connection issues. At the time, that SteamOS release was on the beta branch. Treat this as dated, beta-channel guidance—not a permanent minimum version or a guaranteed fix. Check Valve’s SteamVR release notes and current SteamOS notes for the latest instructions before changing update channels.

Valve’s SteamOS repair guidance mentions using a Windows or Linux PC and a USB-C connection for some recovery methods. That concerns installing or recovering SteamOS; it is not evidence that a Linux PC is supported for routine game streaming to Steam Frame.
