Choose Plausible Community Edition (CE) if you want essential web metrics in a deliberately compact dashboard and are prepared to operate the server yourself. Choose Umami if you want a broader set of documented behavior, conversion, and revenue reports. Choose Matomo On-Premise if you need an extensible analytics platform and can maintain a PHP-and-database stack; some advanced features cost extra. Each product also offers managed hosting, so self-hosting is not the only deployment option.
The editions matter: Plausible CE is not feature-equivalent to Plausible Cloud, Matomo’s free On-Premise core is not the same as its paid add-ons, and Umami’s self-hosted software has different operating responsibilities from Umami Cloud.

Umami vs Plausible vs Matomo: what is different?
| Product and edition | Best fit | What the operator takes on | Cost shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umami self-hosted | Teams wanting a wide range of documented acquisition, behavior, conversion, and revenue reports. | Application and database deployment, security, maintenance, backups, and capacity planning. | Software plus infrastructure and operator time; Umami Cloud is a separate managed option. Current Cloud pricing is not stated in the cited documentation. |
| Plausible Community Edition (CE) | Sites focused on essential metrics, filters, and a straightforward dashboard. | The operator handles installation, maintenance, upgrades, capacity, uptime, backups, security, and stability. | CE software is free to self-host, but infrastructure and operations are not. Plausible Cloud is paid and managed. |
| Matomo On-Premise | Teams seeking broad, extensible analytics and control over hosting location. | A server and technical knowledge, including maintenance of the PHP and database environment. | The core is free to download and use; infrastructure remains an operating cost. Some On-Premise features are paid plugins or bundles. Matomo Cloud is separately paid. |

Which reports and features do you need?
Essential traffic reporting
Plausible’s documentation emphasizes essential statistics in a compact dashboard, with filters, period comparisons, annotations, real-time reporting, traffic sources and campaigns, scroll depth, Search Console data, and exports. This is a useful match when the goal is to understand where visits come from and how core site metrics change without adopting a broad analytics suite. These are product-documented capabilities, not a comparative ease-of-use test. Plausible documentation

Custom events and visitor behavior
Umami’s current documentation covers Umami v3 and describes acquisition measurement, behavior analysis, conversion analysis, revenue reporting, dashboards, teams, and an API. Its listed capabilities include custom events, journeys, session replay, heatmaps, segments, cohorts, retention, goals, and funnels. Confirm that a specific capability is present in the version and deployment you plan to run. Umami v3 documentation About Umami
Funnels, conversions, and revenue
Umami’s v3 documentation lists funnels, goals, attribution, and revenue reporting. Matomo offers extensive analytics, with advanced capabilities such as funnels and heatmaps or session recording appearing among its paid On-Premise offerings. Plausible CE focuses on essential metrics and excludes selected Cloud features, including marketing funnels, journeys, and ecommerce revenue goals. Do not assume Plausible Cloud and CE offer the same feature set. Plausible self-hosting and CE details Matomo pricing and plans

Umami’s introduction lists dashboards, teams, and an API among the platform’s capabilities. Plausible CE does not include SSO or the sites API, according to the vendor’s CE feature list. If team access, integrations, or API access is a deciding requirement, compare the exact edition and current documentation rather than inferring parity from a product name. How do self-hosting and managed hosting compare?
Self-hosting gives you more control over infrastructure and data location, but it transfers operational work to you. Plausible explicitly assigns CE operators responsibility for installation, maintenance, upgrades, capacity, uptime, backups, security, and stability. Matomo says On-Premise requires a server and technical knowledge. Umami documents several self-hosted deployment paths, but a supported deployment method does not remove the need to secure and maintain it.
All three have managed alternatives. Umami documents managed hosting with updates, backups, and scaling; Plausible describes Cloud as vendor-managed; Matomo says its Cloud service includes hosting, maintenance, automatic updates, security monitoring, and backups. Managed hosting reduces infrastructure work while giving up some control over the hosting environment. Umami documentation Plausible self-hosting and Cloud Matomo Cloud details
Can I self-host Umami with Docker?
Yes. Umami documents Docker Compose and a prebuilt Docker image, alongside source installation and a Kubernetes route based on a third-party Helm chart. Its source-install requirements are Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer. Docker Compose includes the application and a PostgreSQL database. These are stated software requirements, not recommended server sizing. Umami installation documentation

What server does Matomo need?
Matomo’s On-Premise FAQ identifies a web server with PHP and MySQL or MariaDB. Analytics storage uses database resources, so storage and capacity need attention as the site and retention period grow; the cited requirements do not provide a universal server size or traffic threshold. Matomo On-Premise requirements
What does Plausible CE require from its operator?
Plausible’s CE page describes a self-hosted release and assigns ongoing operational responsibility to the operator. The cited materials do not establish a specific stack requirement to quote here. The key choice is whether your team can reliably handle deployment, updates, security, backups, uptime, and capacity—not simply whether the software is free. Plausible CE overview
Is Plausible CE free to self-host?
The software is free: Plausible describes Community Edition as an open-source release under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later. Hosting and the work of operating it are still your responsibility. Plausible says CE receives long-term releases twice a year while Cloud receives more frequent updates; release practices can change, so check the current CE page when update cadence matters. CE does not include marketing funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, or the sites API. Plausible CE licensing and feature details

How do privacy and data location differ?
Each vendor describes privacy-oriented design, but vendor statements about product architecture are not proof that every site configuration complies with every law or jurisdiction.
- Umami: The vendor says it avoids cookies, cross-site tracking, and automatic personal-data collection. With a self-hosted deployment, you choose where its data is stored. Umami documentation
- Plausible: The vendor says its analytics uses no cookies and collects no personal data. CE can be hosted on infrastructure chosen by the operator; Plausible describes Cloud data as hosted and processed in the EU. Plausible data policy Plausible self-hosting details
- Matomo: The vendor describes privacy by design and data ownership. On-Premise lets the operator select the server location, while security depends on how that server is secured. Matomo On-Premise overview
For a compliance decision, assess your jurisdiction, configuration, consent practices, data retention, and contracts or responsibilities with the hosting provider. A privacy-oriented default does not settle those questions automatically.

Choose Plausible CE for essential metrics and a smaller scope
Choose Plausible CE if its documented traffic reports cover what you need and you are comfortable operating the service yourself. It is not the right assumption if your requirements depend on CE-excluded features such as marketing funnels, journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, or the sites API; those exclusions distinguish CE from Cloud.
Best Value
Choose Umami for broader documented analysis
Choose Umami if reports such as custom events, journeys, replay, heatmaps, funnels, retention, attribution, or revenue fit your workflow, and you can maintain its application and database or prefer its managed Cloud service. Its current documentation is for v3, and installation options include Compose and a prebuilt image.
Choose Matomo On-Premise for an extensible platform
Choose Matomo On-Premise if you want broad analytics and control of hosting location, and have the technical capacity to maintain the PHP and database server. Budget separately for infrastructure and any paid plugins or bundles needed for advanced capabilities; the free core does not make every feature free.
Quick Recap
Checklist before you deploy
- Define the reports: List the traffic, event, funnel, revenue, team, and integration reports you actually need, then verify each against the edition you will use.
- Estimate storage and retention: Decide how much history to keep and account for the database and backups. Do not rely on a universal traffic threshold or server size; the cited documentation does not establish one.
- Name the operator: Assign responsibility for upgrades, security, backups, monitoring, uptime, and recovery before choosing self-hosting.
- Choose the data location deliberately: Record where the service and backups will reside, especially when data-location requirements matter.
- Recheck edition and terms: Verify current feature inclusion, pricing, and release practices on the vendor pages before committing; those details can change.
