The most dependable trick for beating Moder is to keep your bow ready and attack from range while she is airborne. Use terrain for cover, save stamina for dodging, and treat her grounded phase as a chance to reposition—not an invitation to chase her across the Mountain. No single weapon or arrow type guarantees a win.
Why ranged pressure is the safer plan
Moder is Valheim’s fourth boss, fought in the Mountain biome. The encounter guide describes two phases: while flying, she uses ranged frost attacks; on the ground, she can use a straight-line breath attack and close-range attacks. That makes distance and a bow the practical default while she is airborne. When she lands, take stock of your position and stamina before deciding whether to close in.

The guide recommends a bow-led approach and suggests bringing roughly 200–300 or more arrows. That is its preparation advice, not a measured minimum or a guarantee of victory. It describes Moder as weak to Fire and immune to Frost, but says sources disagree about whether Fire or Obsidian arrows deal more total damage. A Fire weakness label alone does not establish which arrow is best overall.
Prepare for the Mountain and the arena
Protect against cold
Cold exposure can damage an unprotected character in the Mountain biome. The cited guides name Wolf armor, a Wolf Fur Cape, Frost Resistance Mead, and frost-resistance potions as protection options. They do not establish a ranking among them or that combining them provides extra resistance.

Bring food and stamina discipline
Use health and stamina food, and enter rested if possible. The encounter guide gives Serpent Stew, Lox Meat, Sausages, and Queen’s Jam as examples, not a definitive best-in-slot menu. During the fight, keep stamina available for movement and dodging rather than spending it all on an aggressive pursuit over uneven terrain.
Shape the battlefield
Scout the altar area before summoning. Clear nearby wolves, Drakes, and Stone Golems, and avoid starting at night, when more Mountain creatures are active. The guide recommends durable earthworks such as raised earth pillars or trenches for cover; it warns that natural cover and wooden structures may fail. Treat prepared terrain as a defensive aid, not a guaranteed exploit.

Summon Moder without being caught short
The encounter guide says to offer three Dragon Eggs at Moder’s altar. PC Gamer reports that each egg weighs 200, making three eggs a substantial transport problem for a solo player. Plan how to get them to the altar rather than assuming you can comfortably carry all three in one trip. The cited sources do not establish one universally best transport method.
Use the fight rhythm, not a fixed combo
- Before summoning: equip Mountain frost protection, bring your bow and ample arrows, eat health- and stamina-supporting food, and make sure the altar area is navigable.
- While Moder is airborne: maintain distance and use ranged attacks. Watch her attacks and move to cover or dodge rather than standing still to trade damage.
- When she lands: assess the opening, her position, and your stamina. Reposition first if needed; use melee only when you can do so safely.
- Throughout the encounter: avoid chasing her across hazardous ground with an empty stamina bar. Staying mobile and using the terrain matters more than committing to a particular arrow type.
What the evidence does—and does not—settle
This strategy is a synthesis of the encounter guide’s phase descriptions and preparation advice, not a controlled test showing that one tactic or weapon guarantees a win. The cited guide reports a Fire weakness but does not resolve the total-damage comparison between Fire and Obsidian arrows with version-specific calculations. The figures and guidance here come from sources published or reviewed in 2026; exact attack damage and current balance claims are not established by those sources.
