If your Fire tablet says storage is full or does not recognize its microSD card, first check the tablet’s generation and Fire OS version. Supported card capacities vary by generation, and Amazon says Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 or later cannot install apps and games to a microSD card. A card can help with supported files and media, but it is not a universal fix for app space.
First identify your Fire tablet and Fire OS version
Card support and maximum capacities depend on the Fire tablet generation, and not every Fire tablet has a removable card slot. Check the model in the tablet’s Settings, then use Amazon’s Fire tablet model guide if you need help identifying it. Menu names vary by model and Fire OS version.

Amazon’s support guidance gives these maximum microSD capacities and recommends UHS cards, or at least Class 4 for a non-UHS card:
| Fire tablet generation | Maximum microSD capacity | Speed guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 5th–6th Generation | Up to 200 GB | UHS, or at least Class 4 if non-UHS |
| 7th Generation | Up to 256 GB | UHS, or at least Class 4 if non-UHS |
| 8th–9th Generation | Up to 512 GB | UHS, or at least Class 4 if non-UHS |
| 10th Generation and newer | Up to 1 TB | UHS, or at least Class 4 if non-UHS |
These are Amazon’s published compatibility limits, not a guarantee that every card at the maximum capacity will work. Check the tablet model’s guidance before buying or formatting a replacement card. See Amazon’s microSD card troubleshooting guidance.

What to do if the Fire tablet is not recognizing the microSD card
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the tablet has a card slot and that the card’s capacity and speed meet the guidance for that generation.
- Safely unmount and reseat the card. If the card appears in Settings > Storage as portable storage, use the on-screen option to remove or unmount it safely. Then reinsert it securely. Amazon warns that forcibly removing portable storage can result in data loss; see Amazon’s storage guidance.
- Test the card elsewhere. Try it in another compatible device. If you can, try a known-working compatible microSD card in the Fire tablet. Amazon recommends these checks to help distinguish a card problem from a tablet problem: microSD troubleshooting.
- Choose storage mode based on your goal. Portable storage is for moving files between devices. Internal storage may expand device storage on supported tablets, but it has important formatting and removal consequences described below.
- Contact Amazon device support if the problem remains. If the tablet still does not recognize a compatible card after reseating and cross-testing, use model-specific help rather than jumping straight to formatting or a factory reset.
Portable storage or internal storage?
On supported tablets, a card may be set up as portable or internal storage. The choice changes what the card is for and what happens if it is removed.
| Consideration | Portable storage | Internal storage |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Transferring files, photos, and videos between devices. Amazon describes it as “Best for transferring content such as files, photos, and videos between devices.” | Expanding device storage. Amazon describes it as “Best for expanding device storage.” |
| Apps and app data | Does not make Fire OS 6-and-later app and game installation to microSD available. Kindle and Prime Video support portable storage only. | May support apps and games on supported devices, though some apps do not support card storage. |
| Formatting and transfer | Intended for use between devices; safely unmount it before removal. | Formatting it for internal use erases/formats the card and makes it unsuitable for ordinary transfer between devices unless reformatted. |
| Removing or forgetting the card | Forcible removal can risk data loss. | Removing or forgetting an adopted card can make its data or app data unavailable or permanently lost. |
Before adopting a card as internal storage, back up anything on it. Do not casually remove or forget an adopted card. Amazon’s descriptions and app notes are in its storage help.

Will a microSD card fix a Fire tablet that cannot install apps?
Not if the tablet runs Fire OS 6 or higher. Amazon’s troubleshooting page states: “Fire tablet (running FireOS 6 and higher) can’t install apps and games to a microSD card.” A card can still hold supported files or media, but it will not provide app-installation space on those versions. Amazon’s guidance does not establish the same restriction for earlier Fire OS versions, so do not assume older devices behave identically. See Amazon’s microSD troubleshooting page.
How to free space on a Fire tablet
If the card is not the cause—or your tablet cannot install apps to it—use the storage controls available for your Fire OS version. Open Settings > Storage and look for the archive or free-space options shown on your device. Amazon documents different manual archive steps for Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8, so labels and paths can differ.

Amazon-purchased content removed from the device remains saved to your Amazon account in the cloud. Follow the version-specific instructions in Amazon’s storage help.
