The “12GB glass ceiling” is real only in a narrow sense: the M5 iPad Pro with 256GB or 512GB of storage has 12GB of unified memory, and you need the 1TB or 2TB configuration to get 16GB. The base tier gained 4GB over the M4’s 8GB, so nothing was taken away. What changed is that memory is still tied to storage, and that tie decides who should pay more.
How much RAM does the M5 iPad Pro have?
Apple’s M5 iPad Pro tech specs list 12GB of unified memory for the 256GB and 512GB models and 16GB for the 1TB and 2TB models. Memory is fixed by the storage tier you buy. It can’t be bought separately or upgraded later.

The M4 figures come from Apple’s M4 specifications page. The upgrade for lower tiers is 4GB. The top tier stays at 16GB, so buyers of the most expensive models see no memory gain.
Why “12GB ceiling” is only half right
The ceiling applies to the two cheaper storage tiers. Moving from 256GB to 512GB doesn’t raise memory, so 512GB buys storage and nothing else. The jump to 1TB brings 16GB and a 10-core CPU instead of 9-core. It’s a bundled step up, so storage capacity isn’t the only difference between the tiers.

What the launch prices were
These are Apple’s U.S. launch prices from its October 15, 2025 announcement, with availability from October 22. They aren’t live retailer quotes, and discounts or changes since then aren’t covered here.
- 11-inch Wi-Fi: $999
- 11-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular: $1,199
- 13-inch Wi-Fi: $1,299
- 13-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular: $1,499
- Education pricing: from $899 (11-inch) and $1,199 (13-inch)
The $999 model is therefore the 12GB, 256GB, 9-core configuration. The 1TB models with 16GB cost more. Apple’s announcement doesn’t list that price in a form I can verify here, so check Apple’s store for the current figure.

Bandwidth and Apple’s performance claims
Apple says M5 has over 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, nearly 30 percent more than the previous generation, and pitches it at multitasking and AI work. That’s Apple’s claim, based on its own testing in August and September 2025. It isn’t an independent benchmark. Bandwidth also differs from capacity, and the 4GB gain on lower tiers is a separate matter.

Is 12GB enough?
No published source sets a point at which 12GB becomes insufficient on an iPad Pro, so I can’t give a hard threshold. A practical way to decide:

- Browsing, notes, video, email, light multitasking: 12GB is a step up from the M4 base model’s 8GB, and these tasks are the least likely to be limited by it.
- Heavy creative work, large projects, or on-device AI: these are the cases where 16GB could matter. Treat the 1TB tier as worth it only if you also need the storage, or you already hit memory limits on your current device.
- Upgrading from an M4 base model: you gain 4GB, but check whether memory was ever your bottleneck.
Buying 1TB solely for memory means paying for storage you may not use. Because memory can’t be added later, the choice is permanent for the life of the device.
Accessories and total cost
Accessories don’t change the memory tier but do change the total. At launch Apple listed Apple Pencil Pro at $129, Apple Pencil (USB-C) at $79, the 11-inch Magic Keyboard at $299 and the new 13-inch version at $349, all in U.S. dollars.

The M5 iPad Pro gives the entry tiers more memory than the M4 did. Pay for 1TB only if you need the storage or have a specific memory-heavy workload.
