How World of Warcraft Handles Real-World Charity and Tribute Quests

World of Warcraft raises real money for charity mainly through limited-time sales of in-game pets and plush toys, with Blizzard naming the beneficiary and the donation terms in each announcement. Tribute and remembrance quests are a different thing: they honor fictional Warcraft characters or explore grief as a story theme, and they don’t fund anything outside the game. Player-run fundraisers are a third channel, organized by the community rather than by Blizzard’s shop.

Three separate practices

  • Charity shop campaigns: a pet or plush is sold for a limited window, and a stated share of the price goes to a named charity. The announcement defines the beneficiary, dates, and share or cap, and these terms differ by campaign.
  • Tribute and remembrance quests: in-world storytelling. A quest that honors a hero or deals with loss is not a fundraiser unless Blizzard says it is.
  • Player-run events: charity runs and challenges set up by community members, which Blizzard has highlighted but which are not Blizzard shop campaigns.

The sources behind this article are Blizzard’s own announcements and features. They cover named examples; they are not a complete catalog of every charity effort or every tribute in the game.

Blizzard’s charity pet and plush campaigns

Campaign Announced Pledge Reported result
Alterac Brew Pup November 21, 2013 50% of the $10 pet price to Make-A-Wish for purchases through December 31, 2013 $1 million raised (Blizzard thank-you page, 2014)
Mischief December 2, 2016 100% of the U.S. $10 pet price (regional prices vary) to Make-A-Wish through December 31; a $25 glow-in-the-dark plush’s sales through that date were also included More than $2.5 million USD from pet and plush (Blizzard, February 8, 2017)
Dottie December 3, 2019 100% of the pet price through December 31, split equally between Make-A-Wish and WE; plush purchases through that date also supported the campaign Not stated in the sources used here
Shadow Not stated Pet and plush sales supported disaster relief More than $1.8 million for American Red Cross Disaster Relief and the IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (Blizzard, 2018)

Alterac Brew Pup (2013)

The pup was sold in the Battle.net Shop. Blizzard also described a charity bundle with the Enchanted Fey Dragon mount, for which $5 would still go to Make-A-Wish. The $1 million figure comes from Blizzard’s follow-up thank-you page, so it is a reported outcome, separate from the original 50% pledge.

Mischief (2016–2017)

Mischief moved the donation share to 100% of the pet’s price and added a physical plush to the same campaign. Blizzard’s February 2017 follow-up reported more than $2.5 million USD raised from pet and plush sales together.

Dottie (2019)

Dottie’s terms were the most detailed. The announcement excluded chargebacks, refunds, and VAT or similar taxes, and capped donations from pet and plush sales at $3 million. Two beneficiaries shared the money equally. That cap is a reminder to read the fine print: “100%” in a campaign headline still operated within defined conditions.

Shadow (2018)

Blizzard’s community feature reported that Shadow pet and plush sales raised more than $1.8 million, split across two disaster-relief beneficiaries: American Red Cross Disaster Relief and the IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund.

Are these still available?

Treat all of these as historical campaigns. The announcements document the terms and results at the time; they do not show that any pet or plush is on sale now, or that a donation is attached to a current purchase. Check the in-game shop and the seller’s current listing for live terms before buying anything on the assumption that it supports charity.

Player-run fundraising

Blizzard’s March 14, 2018 feature, “The Power of Community: It’s in Your Hands,” opens with the line “The World of Warcraft community accomplishes great things when they come together for a common cause.” It reported that players had donated over $15 million to charitable causes over the years. That is Blizzard’s 2018 figure, not a current lifetime total.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria - PC/Mac - (Obsolete)
  • Master the Path of the Monk - Learn the mystic powers of the Monk, World of Warcraft's newest playable class. Destroy foes with the Windwalker's devastating attacks, replenish allies with the Mistweaver's spiritual energies, and shrug off enormous damage with the Brewmaster's unyielding strength.
  • Battle to level 90 - Ascend to new heights of power as you explore the verdant reaches of the Jade Forest, war with the terrible Yaungol on Kun-Lai Summit, and unlock the secrets of the Mogu'shan Vaults.
  • Unleash the Mighty Pandaren - Set out as a member of the enigmatic Pandaren -- World of Warcraft's first neutral race -- and join the ranks of either the Horde or Alliance as you enter the conflict brewing on Pandaria's shores.
  • Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.

The feature highlighted three community events:

  • Running of the Gnomes, supporting Cleveland Clinic and the creators of the Tuohy Vaccine.
  • Running of the Trolls, raising awareness and money for the Trevor Project.
  • Icecrown Challenge, supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Blizzard reported that the three events had a combined goal of $9,000 and raised over $22,000. Because these were organized by players, their terms, donation channels, and continued existence are separate from anything in Blizzard’s shop.

Tribute and remembrance quests

Harvest Festival: honoring fictional heroes

Blizzard’s Harvest Festival announcement, “In Remembrance: The Harvest Festival Has Arrived,” describes in-world rituals. The Alliance honors Uther the Lightbringer by lighting a candle at his tomb in the Western Plaguelands. The Horde honors Grommash Hellscream by leaving spirits at the Hellscream Memorial in Demon Fall Canyon, Ashenvale. Feasts outside Ironforge and Orgrimmar remember fallen heroes, and some races get unique tributes through the quest “Honoring a Hero.”

All of these honor Warcraft characters. The announcement’s dates applied to that event year, so check a current event calendar for this year’s schedule.

“Stay Awhile”: grief as story

In a January 30, 2023 quest-design interview, Blizzard’s quest team described “Stay Awhile” as “a quiet moment of remembrance.” The story centers on Veritistrasz, an old red dragon returning home and remembering a black dragon friend from before that friend’s corruption. The quest takes place at Ruby Lifeshrine and is conversational rather than combat-driven. The designers deliberately avoided having the player “fix” the character’s emotional state. It shows how the game treats memory and loss, and nothing in the source ties it to a real-world donation.

Real people and tributes: what is established

Blizzard’s sources reviewed here do not give an official list of in-game tributes to real individuals. Don’t assume a memorial quest or item refers to a real person, or that it raises money, unless Blizzard or the event organizers say so.

How to tell what you’re looking at

  1. If the item is a purchase, find the official announcement and read the beneficiary, dates, percentage, caps, and exclusions.
  2. If it is a quest or seasonal event, assume it is storytelling unless the announcement names a charity.
  3. If it is a run, challenge, or donation page, identify the organizer. Player-run events are not Blizzard campaigns.
  4. For any campaign, separate the pledge from the reported total, and confirm that the offer is current.
