The Free Android Ad-Blocking Combo That Sticks: Private DNS + Firefox uBlock Origin

The most dependable free arrangement is a two-layer setup: configure Android Private DNS with a filtering provider such as AdGuard DNS or Blokada Cloud, then browse with Firefox for Android and install uBlock Origin. Private DNS can stop many ad and tracker domains for multiple apps, while uBlock Origin removes page elements and scripts inside Firefox. Either layer alone has a blind spot; together they cover far more without requiring a subscription.

This is not an every-ad, every-app guarantee. DNS filtering works at the domain-request level, and browser extensions only affect pages opened in their browser. VPNs and Firefox’s own DNS-over-HTTPS can also take control of name resolution. The instructions below keep one component in charge of DNS and show how to diagnose conflicts.

The setup in one view

Use Android’s built-in Private DNS as the system layer and Firefox plus uBlock Origin as the browser layer. The roles are different:

Layer Where it works What it can do What it cannot do by itself
Private DNS provider Apps and browsers that use the device resolver, on Wi-Fi and mobile data Blocks requests to known advertising, tracking and malicious domains before a connection is made Remove every visual ad or page script when the page shares a domain with content, or protect traffic that bypasses the device resolver
uBlock Origin in Firefox Web pages opened in Firefox for Android Filters page elements, scripts and network requests with browser filter lists and custom rules Protect other apps, other browsers or traffic intercepted by a VPN with a different DNS path

AdGuard describes its DNS service as basic DNS-level protection that blocks ads, trackers and malicious websites. Blokada’s Android guide says Android 9 and later can use its Private DNS setting to block ads and trackers in apps on every network. Those statements describe the intended scope of DNS filtering, not a measured percentage of ads removed.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Mozilla’s uBlock Origin listing describes a free, open-source, wide-spectrum blocker designed to be efficient with CPU and memory. Its default lists include EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Peter Lowe’s ad-server list, an online malicious-URL list and uBlock Origin’s own lists.

What you need before changing settings

  • An Android phone or tablet with Android 9 or later for the Private DNS feature documented by Blokada. Menu names differ among Samsung, Pixel and other manufacturers.
  • Internet access while you make the change, preferably with a second device or saved instructions available in case a mistyped hostname interrupts connectivity.
  • Firefox for Android installed from your normal app source. The extension is added from Firefox’s own Add-ons or Extensions screen.
  • A decision about which service will own DNS. Choose one Private DNS provider; do not configure several competing DNS mechanisms and assume they will combine cleanly.

You do not need root access. You also do not need to install a separate network-level app if Android Private DNS and Firefox meet your needs.

Step 1: configure Android Private DNS

AdGuard DNS

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Wi-Fi & Internet (the wording varies by Android build), then open Advanced.
  3. Tap Private DNS.
  4. Select Private DNS provider hostname.
  5. Enter the device-specific hostname shown in your AdGuard DNS dashboard, then tap Save.

Use the hostname exactly as displayed. The field expects a hostname, not a web address, so do not add https://, a slash or spaces. If the setting is accepted, leave Wi-Fi and mobile data enabled and test a few apps. Android may show the menu under Network & internet instead of Wi-Fi & Internet.

Blokada Cloud

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Network & internet, or the equivalent network section supplied by your device maker.
  3. Open Private DNS and select Private DNS provider hostname.
  4. Enter the device-specific Blokada Cloud hostname provided for your account or configuration.
  5. Tap Save, then open a normal website and one or two apps to confirm connectivity.

Blokada specifically warns that a typo can cause a connection failure or loss of internet access. If that happens, return to Private DNS, choose Automatic (or Off where that is the available fallback), restore connectivity, and re-enter the hostname carefully. Do not paste a URL beginning with https://.

Confirm that the system layer is active

Android does not provide a universal ad-count screen. A practical check is to load the same ad-heavy site in a regular browser and in Firefox, then open several apps that normally contact advertising services. You are checking for a functioning connection and fewer known ad or tracker requests, not proving that every ad has disappeared. If all traffic fails immediately after saving, treat it as a hostname or DNS-ownership problem first.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Step 2: add uBlock Origin to Firefox for Android

  1. Install or open Firefox for Android.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Select Add-ons or Extensions, depending on the current Firefox label.
  4. Choose uBlock Origin.
  5. Review the permissions and tap Add.

Mozilla notes that some add-ons may not be compatible with Firefox for Android. If uBlock Origin is not offered on a particular Firefox release or device, update Firefox and check the add-on listing again rather than installing an unverified package. The Mozilla listing identifies uBlock Origin as free, open source under GPLv3 and designed to use CPU and memory efficiently.

After installation, open a page in Firefox and use the uBlock Origin toolbar panel to see whether it is active. The extension’s filter lists are enabled by default. You can leave the defaults in place for a low-maintenance setup, or open the dashboard to inspect lists and add custom rules. Changes apply to Firefox pages; they do not become system-wide rules for other apps.

Why the two layers complement each other

DNS filtering stops requests early

When an app asks Android to resolve an advertising or tracking domain, the Private DNS provider can answer with a blocked result instead of an address. This can cover apps that have no extension system and works across Wi-Fi and cellular connections when they use the device resolver. It is lightweight because there is no page to parse and no browser interface to maintain.

DNS sees a domain request, not the complete page. If an advertisement is served from the same domain as the article or video, blocking the whole domain could also block useful content, so a DNS service may allow it. DNS also cannot remove a blank container, a sponsored label or a script that has already arrived from an allowed domain. Those are browser-level jobs.

uBlock Origin filters the page itself

Inside Firefox, uBlock Origin can apply cosmetic rules that hide page elements and script rules that DNS cannot express. Its broad lists cover advertising, privacy and malicious-URL patterns. Because it operates after the page is requested, it can distinguish individual elements on a page instead of only deciding whether a domain resolves.

The trade-off is scope. A page opened in Chrome, an in-app web view or a game is outside Firefox’s extension. That is why adding uBlock Origin does not replace Private DNS for a device-wide goal.

The DNS conflicts that make a working setup appear broken

VPN applications

A VPN can install its own tunnel and DNS resolver. When that happens, it may bypass Android Private DNS or replace it with the VPN’s filtering policy. Blokada’s guidance is to turn off the VPN’s DNS or ad-blocking mode, or use Blokada 6 instead of trying to run two network filters at once.

For troubleshooting, disconnect the VPN completely, test the Private DNS configuration, then reconnect the VPN with its DNS or ad-blocking feature disabled if the product allows that. If the VPN cannot relinquish DNS control, you must choose between the VPN’s resolver and Android Private DNS; both cannot reliably be the sole authority at the same time.

Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS

Firefox can resolve names through its own DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) service instead of asking Android. Mozilla documents four modes: Default, Increased, Max and Off, along with per-site exceptions. A DoH mode that sends Firefox queries elsewhere can make Firefox behave differently from other apps and can bypass the Private DNS provider you intended to test.

For a clean baseline, use one DNS authority. Set Firefox DoH to Off while evaluating Android Private DNS, or deliberately choose Firefox’s DoH service and understand that Firefox then has a separate policy from the rest of the device. If only one site fails, check Firefox’s per-site exception before changing the system setting.

When the full AdGuard Android app is appropriate

AdGuard says its full Android app is not distributed through Google Play because Google prohibits network-level ad blockers there. Installing it therefore requires manual installation from AdGuard. That app can provide controls beyond a simple Private DNS profile, but manual installation adds a trust and maintenance decision: obtain the package from the provider, review Android’s install-permission prompts and keep the app updated yourself.

If you want a Play-store-only workflow, skip the full app. Android Private DNS plus Firefox and uBlock Origin provides the two layers without sideloading. The choice is about installation and control, not a guarantee that one route blocks every ad.

Choose the arrangement that matches your goal

Goal Recommended arrangement Reason Main limitation
Reduce ads and trackers in many apps with minimal setup One Private DNS provider Built into Android and applies to apps that use the device resolver Cannot reliably remove every in-page element or same-domain ad
Make websites cleaner while keeping system-wide filtering Private DNS plus Firefox and uBlock Origin Combines domain blocking with browser-level cosmetic and script filtering Firefox rules do not affect other browsers or apps
Use a VPN for its tunnel VPN with its DNS/ad-blocking mode disabled, if supported, or the VPN’s own resolver instead of Private DNS A single DNS authority avoids bypasses and conflicting policies You may have to give up one product’s filtering layer
Avoid sideloading Private DNS plus Firefox extension Both features are configured through Android and Firefox Fewer controls than a full network-filtering app may offer
Manage detailed DNS filters and user rules Use the chosen DNS provider’s dashboard, with uBlock Origin for Firefox-specific rules AdGuard exposes DNS filters and user rules; uBlock Origin exposes filter lists and custom rules More settings mean more chances to create an accidental block

Troubleshooting by symptom

Nothing connects after saving Private DNS

  1. Return to Settings → Private DNS and switch to Automatic or Off to restore the previous resolver.
  2. Re-enter the provider hostname character by character. Remove https://, trailing slashes and spaces.
  3. Confirm that the hostname belongs to the provider account or configuration you selected; the documented setup uses a device-specific hostname.
  4. Test again with any VPN disconnected. A VPN may reject or replace the DNS path.

Ads remain in an app

First determine whether the app uses a domain that the DNS list allows, embeds advertising in content, or bypasses the device resolver. Private DNS does not provide browser-style cosmetic filtering. There is no supported switch that makes uBlock Origin operate inside unrelated apps. You can inspect the provider’s DNS rules and add a user rule when you are certain a domain is solely advertising; blocking a shared content domain can break the app.

Firefox still shows page ads

  1. Open the page in Firefox, not another browser or an in-app web view.
  2. Open Firefox’s Add-ons or Extensions screen and verify that uBlock Origin is installed and enabled.
  3. Open the uBlock Origin panel and check whether the page is being allowed by a site-specific exception.
  4. Review the filter-list status in the uBlock Origin dashboard. The default lists can be changed, so a disabled list may explain different results.
  5. Check Firefox’s DoH mode. If it is using a separate resolver, Firefox may not follow the Android Private DNS policy.

Only some apps follow the policy

That difference is expected when apps use their own networking stack, a VPN tunnel or a resolver other than Android’s. Compare behavior with the VPN off and with Firefox DoH set to the mode you intend. Keep the diagnosis narrow: a successful browser test proves Firefox’s path, not every app’s path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery or performance concerns

uBlock Origin’s Mozilla listing emphasizes efficient CPU and memory use, but the published material does not establish a battery-saving percentage for this combination. Avoid claiming a measured battery benefit. If a phone feels slower, disable one layer temporarily, test the same pages, and inspect whether a large custom filter list or a VPN is responsible.

Control, updates and safe customization

Keep DNS rules understandable

Start with the provider’s default protection. Add a custom DNS rule only when you can identify the domain and understand what else it serves. Record exceptions so you can remove them if an app stops loading. A blocked domain can affect login, telemetry, media playback or an embedded payment page, not just advertising.

Use uBlock Origin’s lists deliberately

The default uBlock Origin lists already cover common advertising, privacy and malicious-URL patterns. Additional regional or nuisance lists can improve coverage for a particular language or site, but each list adds rules to evaluate and can increase false positives. If a site breaks, use the extension’s per-site control for that site rather than disabling the blocker globally.

Update the components separately

Android system updates can rename the Private DNS menu. Firefox updates can change add-on compatibility or DoH defaults. DNS provider policies and filter lists also change over time. After a major update, verify three things: ordinary internet access, a known ad-heavy page in Firefox, and at least one non-browser app. Treat marketplace counts and ratings as snapshots, not performance guarantees. The Mozilla uBlock Origin listing showed 11,193,944 users and a 4.8/5 rating from 22,125 reviews in its 2026 listing; those figures can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What this setup does not prove

No independent benchmark in the available published material compares blocking rates among these Android configurations. Do not infer that one setup blocks a fixed percentage of ads, saves a specific amount of battery or outperforms another on every phone. The evidence supports a division of labor: DNS filtering reaches many app requests, and uBlock Origin adds page-level controls in Firefox.

Blokada’s guide was updated on 2026-10-02, and Mozilla’s Firefox Android DNS-over-HTTPS support page was updated on 2025-09-25. Those dates identify the documentation versions behind the menu names and resolver guidance; Android manufacturers can still present different labels, and software behavior can change after an update.

Final recommendation

Set one provider in Android Private DNS, then install uBlock Origin in Firefox for Android. Keep VPN DNS filtering and Firefox DoH from silently taking over while you test. This combination is free, requires no root access and covers two different failure points: domain requests across much of the device and page content inside Firefox. Expect exceptions, especially in apps and on sites that share advertising and content domains, and troubleshoot the DNS owner before adding more blockers.
