These changes reduce interruptions, recover dismissed alerts, add a little ambient convenience, and close security gaps that are easy to overlook.
The exact menu names can differ by Android release, Pixel model, country, carrier and Phone app version. If a label is not where this guide places it, use the Settings search field or search inside the Phone app for the key terms shown below.

1. Pick a navigation style, then tune the gestures
Pixel phones generally start with gesture navigation. Google’s Store settings guide describes the default this way: “Your settings default to ‘Gesture Navigation,’ meaning you swipe to operate your device.” I keep it enabled because swiping from the bottom and sides leaves more of the display available and removes the permanent Back, Home and Recents buttons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set gesture navigation
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Navigation mode (on some releases, search Settings for “navigation mode”).
- Select Gesture navigation.
- Tap the gear icon beside it, if shown, to adjust gesture sensitivity and the option for the back gesture.
The back gesture is a swipe inward from either side edge. A short, shallow swipe works better than dragging all the way across the screen. In apps with side drawers, begin the gesture a little higher or use the app’s own back control so you do not open the drawer accidentally.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Use Quick Tap for a repeatable shortcut
Pixel’s two-tap back action is called Quick Tap. On Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones, two taps on the back can take a screenshot or play and pause media, among other actions documented by Google. To configure it, open Settings > System > Gestures > Quick Tap to start actions, turn on Use Quick Tap, and choose the action. Select screenshot if you capture information often; choose play/pause if the phone is your regular music remote.
Quick Tap can trigger in a pocket or when the phone is set down hard. If that happens, lower the sensitivity or choose a less consequential action. A case can also change how reliably the taps register.
When three-button navigation is the better choice
Gesture navigation is not automatically superior. Three-button navigation is easier to discover, gives a visible Back button, and can be more comfortable for anyone who has difficulty with edge swipes or uses an accessibility service that conflicts with gestures. Return to Settings > System > Navigation mode and select 3-button navigation if visible controls are more reliable for you. The practical choice is convenience and screen space versus explicit, always-visible controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Turn on Call Screen and spam protection where your phone supports them
Unknown calls are the setting I try to tame immediately. Pixel’s Phone app can identify suspected spam and, where supported, screen a caller before the call reaches you. Availability is conditional: Google says manual Call Screen is available in the United States and Canada on selected Android devices, while automatic and other screening modes vary by country, device and Phone app version. Carrier support and language settings can affect the result as well.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Find the controls in the Phone app
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Look for Spam and Call Screen, or a separate Call Screen entry.
- Turn on caller-ID and spam options that are offered, then review the available Call Screen choices.
Some Pixel builds place related controls under Call Assist. Do not assume that a missing toggle means the phone is faulty; it may simply be unavailable for your region, model, carrier or current Phone app release.
Choose how aggressively to filter
Caller-ID and spam protection can warn you about likely nuisance calls, while Call Screen lets an automated assistant ask why an unknown caller is calling. That reduces interruptions, but an overly aggressive setting can delay a legitimate call from a hospital, delivery driver or school. Keep important numbers saved in Contacts and check your recent-call list when you are expecting a call from an unfamiliar number.
Google Safety Center also documents caller-ID and SMS spam protection. Review both the call and message protections rather than enabling only one. If a legitimate number is flagged, use the Phone app’s report or “Not spam” control when available; this improves your own call history without promising that every future call will be classified correctly.
What to do when Call Screen is missing
- Update the Phone app from Google Play and restart it.
- Confirm that your device, country and carrier are supported.
- Check Phone > Settings > Call Assist as well as Spam and Call Screen.
- Use the available caller-ID and spam warnings even if interactive screening is not offered.
The goal is fewer interruptions, not a guarantee that every fraudulent call will be blocked.

3. Enable Now Playing for effortless music discovery
Now Playing is one of the most distinctive Pixel features because it works passively. Google Safety Center explains: “With Now Playing, Pixel can identify music playing around you and show the song info on your home screen.” I enable it because a song in a café, shop or television program can be identified without opening an app or asking a voice assistant.
Turn it on and check what appears
- Open Settings and search for Now Playing.
- Open the Now Playing settings and switch on Identify songs playing nearby (the wording can vary).
- Review the lock-screen and home-screen display options, and decide whether you want the identified track shown prominently.
On many Pixel versions the controls are also reachable through Settings > Sound & vibration > Now Playing. The phone uses an on-device song-identification database for its ambient recognition, but the feature still has practical limits: very quiet music, heavy background noise, remixes and obscure recordings may not be identified.
Balance discovery with privacy
Now Playing is a convenience feature, not a requirement for calls or music playback. If you prefer not to have nearby audio analyzed for song matching, turn it off in the same settings page. You can also keep recognition enabled while limiting how much information appears on the lock screen, which is useful when other people can see your phone.
4. Enable Notification History before you need it
Notification History is a recovery tool. I turn it on because a swipe can dismiss an alert before I have read which app sent it, and Android does not automatically recreate every notification. With history enabled, you can inspect recently dismissed alerts and return to the originating app.

Find the switch even when menus move
- Open Settings.
- Use the search field and enter Notification history.
- Open the matching result and turn on Use notification history.
On releases that expose the full path, it is usually under Settings > Notifications > Notification history. Search is the more dependable instruction because Google can move the control between Android versions and Pixel feature updates.
Understand what history can and cannot recover
History starts collecting after you enable it; it cannot reconstruct notifications dismissed earlier. It is also not a full archive of every message. Some apps suppress history entries, and the list is designed for recent recovery rather than permanent storage. Open it from Settings when you cannot remember whether an alert came from Messages, a delivery app, a calendar or a security service.
Notification History adds a small amount of information to the notification system, so review the list if you share a phone or use a lock screen visible to others. The practical trade-off is recovery value versus another place where notification details may be displayed.

Security settings deserve a version-qualified check rather than a blanket promise. Android 15 added authentication requirements for sensitive anti-theft actions such as removing a SIM or turning off Find My Device, and it can apply additional lock-down behavior after multiple failed attempts. Android 16 introduced Advanced Protection as “Google’s strongest mobile device protection.” Exact features depend on Android release, Pixel model, Google account status and region.

Start in Security and privacy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Review the device-unlock method, Find My Device status, theft-protection options and any Advanced Protection entry shown for your phone.
- Enable every protection you can use, following the on-screen requirements for a secure screen lock, Google account and recovery method.
Some phones show theft-related controls under a dedicated Theft protection section. If you do not see Advanced Protection, your Android version, account, device or region may not support it yet. Keep the phone updated and revisit this page after a major Android upgrade.
What the protections are designed to stop
The Android 15 changes make high-impact actions harder to perform after a thief obtains an unlocked or recently used phone. Requiring authentication before removing a SIM or disabling Find My Device helps preserve your ability to locate and recover the device. Lock-down behavior after repeated failed attempts is intended to slow guessing and automated abuse.
Advanced Protection is a broader security mode, not merely another screen-lock timeout. It can impose stricter app, web and account safeguards, so read the compatibility notices before enabling it on a phone used for specialized enterprise software, testing or sideloaded applications. The right setting is the strongest one that still permits the apps and accounts you genuinely need.

| Change | Main benefit | Main trade-off | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gesture navigation and Quick Tap | More screen space and faster shortcuts | Less visible control; accidental edge swipes or taps | Settings > System > Navigation mode; Settings > System > Gestures |
| Call Screen and spam protection | Fewer interruptions from unknown callers and texts | Availability varies; legitimate callers can be delayed or flagged | Phone > Settings > Spam and Call Screen, Call Screen or Call Assist |
| Now Playing | Automatic nearby-song identification | Privacy preference and occasional recognition misses | Settings search for Now Playing; often Sound & vibration |
| Notification History | Recover recently dismissed alerts | More notification details retained for later viewing | Settings search for Notification history |
| Theft protection and Advanced Protection | Stronger resistance to account, SIM and device takeover | Version, account and app-compatibility requirements | Settings > Security & privacy |
A five-minute setup order
For a new Pixel, I use this order: set the navigation style first, then configure Quick Tap; open the Phone app and check every spam and Call Screen option offered; enable Now Playing and decide what appears on the lock screen; search Settings for Notification history and switch it on; finish in Security & privacy and activate the strongest compatible theft protection. After a system or Phone app update, repeat the last two checks because availability and menu labels can change.
The Bottom Line
These five changes turn a stock Pixel into a phone that is easier to navigate, quieter when unknown numbers call, better at identifying music, more forgiving when alerts are dismissed, and harder to disable or take over if it is stolen.
