If you mean the lettering printed on the physical keys of a Commodore 64, the independent C64 Keyboard project is a digital reconstruction made to reproduce those keycap legends. Which Commodore 64 font are you looking for?
The phrase “Commodore 64 font” can mean two different things. C64 Keyboard recreates the lettering printed on the computer’s physical keycaps. Screen fonts instead reproduce the characters the computer displays, including its PETSCII character set. These are different designs for different uses.

If your goal is a graphic that resembles the C64’s keyboard labels, C64 Keyboard is the relevant project. If you need characters for an emulator or a design of the C64 screen, look at screen-character-set projects such as The Ultimate Commodore Font or the C64-fonts collection.

The project lists TTF and OTF desktop font files, a webfont, editable outlines, a specimen, and a complete package. Its glyphs focus on the key legends: uppercase letters, numerals, punctuation, arrows, the pound sign (£), selected accented letters, function-key labels, classic key legends, and all 63 PETSCII graphic front legends. Lowercase input appears as uppercase, so it is not designed for ordinary mixed-case prose.

The author describes the work as a reconstruction based on a keyboard photograph, not an exact tracing. Legend identities and assignments follow the Ultimate Commodore 64 Reference; details such as frame thickness, curves, and print proportions are inferred from the photograph. That makes it useful for a keyboard-inspired design, but not a guarantee of exact reproduction of every physical key or printing variation.
How to install and use the font
Use it in a desktop application
- Download the TTF or OTF file from the C64 Keyboard project.
- Install the font using your operating system’s usual font-install process.
- In your design or writing application, select C64 Keyboard from the font menu. Type uppercase letters and the supported symbols; lowercase input renders as uppercase.
Try PETSCII symbols in the preview
- Download and extract the project’s complete package.
- Open
preview.htmlin a browser. - Use the special-key or PETSCII buttons to insert symbols into the type tester, then copy the text into an application where C64 Keyboard is selected.
The project’s PETSCII preview symbols depend on C64 Keyboard for correct display. Its key map and encoding guide explain the symbol codes and key combinations. In the project’s stated uppercase/graphics-mode mapping, the left legends correspond to Commodore-plus-key and the right legends to Shift-plus-key.

How it differs from C64 screen fonts
A keycap font imitates labels printed on plastic; a screen font imitates the character shapes rendered by the computer. If you want screen-style graphics or a character set for emulator use, choose a project that explicitly documents C64 screen characters. The Ultimate Commodore Font describes variants such as Pet Me 64 and encoding for complete Commodore character sets. The C64-fonts repository lists original and custom character-set files and includes instructions for use with VICE.
Before choosing, check the target (key legends or screen characters), the glyphs you need, and whether you need PETSCII graphics. C64 Keyboard’s editable outlines and multiple font formats suit key-legend artwork, while its uppercase-only behavior and inferred shapes may not suit other purposes.

Check the license for the font you use
Licensing is project-specific. The Style64 license applies to the named C64 User, C64 User Mono, C64 Pro, C64 Pro Mono, and C64 Elite Mono typefaces—not to every Commodore-themed font. Its terms restrict selling those fonts, redistributing them in font collections, and hosting direct downloads, while allowing certain limited uses such as linking, unmodified web embedding, and static images or vector art.
The C64 Keyboard project’s overview does not establish its license terms. Check the project’s own license before using its files commercially, embedding them, or redistributing them; do not assume another C64 font’s terms apply.
