An LLM judge can miss visual evidence for two different reasons: the image may not be present in the judge’s input at all, or the judge may receive it but still rely on persuasive text instead. Multimodal access is not proof of perceptual grounding. To assess a judge fairly, check what evidence it can see, what task it is performing, and whether its decisions hold up against references or human review.
What is the channel gap?
“Channel gap” is a useful way to describe a mismatch between the evidence a task depends on and the evidence available to its evaluator. It is an explanatory framing, not a standardized term established by the papers discussed here.

Imagine evaluating an answer about a photograph. If the judge receives only the answer’s text, it can assess wording and plausibility, but it cannot directly inspect the photograph. Its judgment is limited to the evidence represented in its input. That is an access failure: the relevant channel is missing.

A different problem arises when the judge receives both the image and the text. The image is accessible, but the judge may still give more weight to a plausible-sounding explanation than to what the image actually shows. That is a grounding failure. Adding a channel fixes the first problem only if the evaluator can and does use its evidence correctly.

Does image input make an LLM judge reliable?
No. Image input gives a multimodal judge an opportunity to inspect visual evidence; it does not establish that the judge has grounded its decision in that evidence.
Park et al.’s 2026 paper, Mitigating Perceptual Judgment Bias in Multimodal LLM-as-a-Judge via Perceptual Perturbation and Reward Modeling, describes a failure they call “Perceptual Judgment Bias.” The authors write that “when visual evidence conflicts with textual cues, MLLM judges tend to reward plausible narratives over perceptually correct answers.” This is evidence of a possible failure mode, not a finding that every multimodal model behaves this way or does so at the same rate.

The practical implication is to test for evidence use rather than infer it from a model’s capabilities or the fact that an image was attached. When text and image disagree, a judge’s decision should track the relevant evidence, not merely the more fluent account.
Why does the evaluation format matter?
A judge’s performance can depend on what it is asked to do. Chen et al.’s 2024 benchmark, MLLM-as-a-Judge: Assessing Multimodal LLM-as-a-Judge with Vision-Language Benchmark, evaluates three formats and reports different levels of agreement with human preferences across them.

| Evaluation format | What the judge does | Finding reported by Chen et al. |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring evaluation | Assigns a score to an answer. | The benchmark reports significant divergence from human preferences. |
| Pair comparison | Chooses between two answers. | The benchmark reports “remarkable human-like discernment” in this format. |
| Batch ranking | Orders multiple answers. | The benchmark reports significant divergence from human preferences. |
The benchmark also reports bias, hallucination, and inconsistency. These are findings from that benchmark, not a universal ranking of every current judge or task. A score, a pairwise choice, and a ranking are different judgments; success in one does not establish reliability in the others.
What can make a judge reward the wrong qualities?
Judge errors do not come only from missing modalities. The benchmark itself—its questions, rubric, examples, and prompts—can shape what a judge rewards.

Feuer et al.’s ICLR 2025 study, Style Outweighs Substance: Failure Modes of LLM Judges in Alignment Benchmarking, identifies possible confounds including a lack of verifiable ground truth, sparse questions across broad topics, judge-template effects, and implicit judge preferences. In the alignment-benchmark setting they studied, the authors report that tested judges “prioritize stylistic preferences over other important considerations, like factuality and safety.” Keep that scope in view: it is evidence about the judges and benchmark setting examined in that paper, not a claim that style always outweighs substance.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA polished answer may therefore score well without being correct, safe, or faithful to the visual evidence. A vague rubric can make that harder to detect: if score levels do not define what counts as factual support, image accuracy, or safety, the judge has more room to fall back on implicit preferences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you check whether a judge is using the evidence?
Design checks around the decision you need the judge to make. A useful evaluation makes the evidence, task format, and scoring criteria explicit, then compares automated judgments with an appropriate reference.
- Confirm the judge’s inputs. List the evidence needed to make the decision—such as an image, text, or reference answer—and verify that each item is actually included in the evaluation input. A judge cannot directly assess evidence it never receives.
- Test for grounding when channels conflict. Include cases where the text and image point to different conclusions. Check whether the judge identifies evidence from the relevant channel and reaches a decision consistent with it. A rationale that merely repeats the answer’s claims does not by itself demonstrate that the image informed the judgment.
- Match the test to the task format. Evaluate scoring, pair comparison, or batch ranking using the format you intend to deploy. Chen et al.’s benchmark found differing results across these formats, so performance in one should not be treated as proof of performance in another.
- Make the rubric operational. Separate independent concerns, such as factual correctness and style, rather than combining many dimensions into one vague criterion. Describe what each score level means and provide examples that calibrate the judgment. Apple’s evaluator guidance recommends detailed score-level descriptions and examples; it also warns that combining too many dimensions can lead to attention decay.
- Use a reference for objectively checkable work. When an answer has an objectively correct result, supply a reference answer or other known-ground-truth material. Apple recommends reference-guided evaluation for such tasks. For criteria that cannot be checked deterministically, compare the judge with suitable human or expert assessments.
- Check for non-semantic influences. Look for effects from answer position, length, style, formatting, or judge-template wording. Feuer et al. identify style preference and template effects among the possible confounds in their alignment-benchmark study.
- Validate structured inputs and outputs. Structured data still needs to reach the judge in a readable form. Apple’s structured-output guidance says evaluator output can be formatted as readable text and that serialized JSON is supplied to the judge by default. Confirm that the structure preserves the fields and evidence your rubric depends on.
These controls make evaluation more inspectable; they do not guarantee unbiased judgments. Treat automated scores as measurements to validate, not as ground truth simply because a model produced them.
Quick Recap
What should you compare when choosing or auditing an LLM judge?
- Channel coverage: Which modalities and source evidence does the evaluator actually receive?
- Evidence grounding: Does the decision track evidence in the relevant channel, particularly when channels conflict?
- Task format: Is the judge scoring one answer, choosing between two, or ranking a batch?
- Rubric clarity: Are the dimensions distinct, with concrete descriptions and examples for score levels?
- Reference and validation: Is there a gold answer, deterministic check, or appropriate human comparison for the criterion?
- Non-semantic cues: Could position, style, length, formatting, or template wording sway the result?
