To remove a distracting object on a compatible Mac, open the image in Photos, click Edit, then choose Tools > Clean Up. Click, brush over, or circle the area you want removed, inspect the result, and click Done. Apple also documents Extend for generating content beyond a photo’s frame and Reframe for adjusting perspective; availability depends on your Mac, macOS version, language, and region.
Which tool should you use?

Remove an object with Clean Up
- Open Photos and double-click the photo you want to edit.
- Click Edit in the toolbar.
- Choose Tools > Clean Up. Toolbar labels or placement may differ by macOS version. Apple’s instructions are at Remove distractions and imperfections from your photos on Mac.
- Click, brush over, or circle the distraction. Some objects may be highlighted automatically. Adjust the brush size or zoom in if you need more precise selection.
- Inspect the result, then click Done to finish.
Clean Up is intended for distracting objects, not detailed portrait retouching. Apple warns that brushing over a person’s face can create a blurred or pixelated effect, so avoid selecting faces and check important details carefully.
Extend the frame or adjust perspective
In Photos’ editing view, open Tools and choose Extend or Reframe if the options are available. Extend generates beyond the original frame; Reframe changes the photo’s perspective. The guide does not make a quality guarantee, so examine the generated area and the overall composition before accepting an edit.

Check whether your Mac can use the tools
Apple’s Clean Up requirements page, published April 14, 2025, lists a Mac with M1 or later and macOS Sequoia 15.1 as the Mac baseline. See Requirements to use Clean Up in Photos for Apple’s current eligibility information. The page also describes separate conditions for the EU and restrictions involving mainland China: Clean Up will not work on devices purchased there, or in the specified case of a supported device used there with an Apple Account country or region set to mainland China.
Apple Intelligence is not available on every Mac or in every language and region, and some features may have usage limits. Apple’s macOS 27 guide lists supported languages but cautions that feature availability varies; a language appearing on the list does not guarantee that a particular tool works in every region. Protect the original and review the result
Photos retains the original image when you edit, and Apple documents comparing the original with the edited version, undoing changes, and reverting to the original. To experiment more freely, duplicate the photo first. Apple’s Editing basics in Photos on Mac explains these options.

Other Apple Intelligence features in Photos
Natural-language search for photos or moments in videos and custom Memory Movies generated from a description are separate Photos features, not steps in the Clean Up, Extend, or Reframe editing workflow. A Memory Movie option may take time to appear while Photos processes the library. Image Playground is another Mac feature for creating or editing original images from descriptions, photos, or people; it is distinct from editing a photo in the Photos library with these tools.
