In either design, treat an event as a prompt to read the current property—not as the property itself. The available documentation does not establish a particular author’s implementation or prove a battery-life improvement.
What changes when a manager stops polling
A polling manager repeatedly reads a value—often a battery attribute such as capacity—to discover whether it has changed. An event-driven manager waits for a notification, then reads the current value and updates its own state. This avoids checking on a fixed schedule, but it is not a guarantee that every percentage change will produce a notification on every laptop.

The Linux Kernel Documentation describes the power-supply class as exposing attributes through sysfs and uevent interfaces. Which attributes exist depends on what the device and driver provide. The documentation establishes these interfaces; it does not guarantee identical event coverage across hardware.

The Linux Kernel Documentation, udev manual, and UPower reference describe these interfaces but do not provide comparative performance measurements or a universal recommendation. Select the layer that supplies the needed events with acceptable dependencies, then verify it on the actual hardware.

Read state after a notification
Keep notification and state separate. A notification tells the manager that it may be time to check; the attribute or API property supplies the current state. This distinction matters because the notification may describe a broader device change, and an event is not necessarily a complete or durable record of every intermediate value.
Using power-supply attributes
For a kernel-level implementation, identify the relevant power-supply device and attribute on the target machine, then read the attribute after the event arrives. Do not assume every machine exposes the same attributes or that an event accompanies every update. The kernel documentation describes the interface, while the device driver determines what is available in practice.

Using UPower properties
UPower’s device API defines properties such as Percentage and State. The project documents percentage as a value from 0 to 100, while noting that it can be approximate when the hardware reports battery level coarsely. State describes conditions including charging and discharging. After a source-change notification, query the relevant property rather than assuming the notification itself encodes the latest value.
The UPower reference identifies the API as a system message-bus service. Its upower --monitor command reports when a power source is added, removed, or changed. That is useful for checking the service’s observed events, but the documented command behavior does not prove that a particular percentage update will always be reported as a change on every device.

Verify event coverage on the laptop
- Identify the device and property. Find the power-supply device path and the attribute or UPower property the manager currently checks. Confirm that it exists on the target system.
- Observe the candidate event source. Monitor the kernel/udev path or use
upower --monitorfor UPower. The latter reports power-source add, remove, and change events. - Exercise distinct changes. Connect and disconnect AC power, and observe battery state and percentage. Record whether notifications arrive for each transition the manager needs to handle.
- Read the value after each notification. Compare the current attribute or API property with the manager’s previous state. Handle cases where the value is unchanged, unavailable, approximate, or the device has been added or removed.
- Retain a fallback only if needed. If the target system does not notify for a required change, an event-only design cannot detect it reliably from that source alone. A limited periodic check may be a deliberate compatibility fallback, rather than an assumption that the event source covers the property.
These checks establish behavior only for the tested device, driver, and software configuration. Claims about reduced wakeups, CPU use, responsiveness, or battery life require measurements with a stated method; interface documentation alone does not show such an improvement.

Removing a userspace polling loop changes how the application checks state; it does not by itself change the kernel’s runtime power-management policy. The kernel’s device-power documentation describes controls such as power/control for allowing or forbidding runtime power management. Those controls are distinct from system-wide suspend behavior and should not be changed merely to replace polling.
