GitHub describes Copilot code review as a tool that reviews pull requests, identifies issues and suggests fixes. Its documentation also warns that reviews can miss problems and produce false positives.
The headline describes a personal experience, but no verifiable review exchange or confirmed bug findings are available to support a first-person account. The useful answer is the broader one: AI code review can help you inspect a change, provided you check its claims against the code, tests and your own understanding.

What AI code review can do
A code-review assistant can examine a pull request, call attention to possible issues and suggest changes. That can make it easier to notice a suspicious condition or a case worth testing. It does not establish that the suggested issue is real, and it cannot certify that the code has no other defects.
GitHub’s Copilot code review documentation describes the feature as reviewing pull requests, identifying issues and suggesting fixes. The currently listed interfaces include GitHub.com, GitHub CLI, GitHub Mobile, VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs and an Azure DevOps public preview. GitHub lists the feature as available on paid Copilot plans; check its documentation for current plan and preview details, which can change.

How reliable are AI code-review comments?
There is no established universal bug-catching rate in the evidence available here. Reliability depends on the change, the context the tool can see and the particular issue being assessed. A clear explanation may still be mistaken, while a clean-looking review does not prove that a change is safe.
GitHub’s Copilot code-review limitations say reviews can miss problems, particularly in large or complex changes, and can raise false positives when the system misunderstands code. Treat each comment as a hypothesis to investigate, not as a verdict.
What one security evaluation found
A preprint submitted to arXiv on September 17, 2025, titled “GitHub’s Copilot Code Review: Can AI Spot Security Flaws Before You Commit?”, reports that its evaluation found frequent failures to detect critical vulnerabilities, including SQL injection, cross-site scripting and insecure deserialization. That finding belongs to the study’s particular evaluation; it does not establish a general detection percentage for AI code review or predict how every tool will perform on every project.
How to check a review comment
- Locate the exact code path. Read the changed lines and the surrounding logic. Check whether the condition described by the comment can actually occur, including relevant inputs and state.
- Try to reproduce the concern. Create a focused test or use an existing test that exercises the scenario. If the comment proposes a fix, check that it addresses the underlying issue rather than only changing the symptom.
- Run the relevant checks. Execute the project’s tests and, for security-sensitive changes, use appropriate security checks. A passing test suite is useful evidence, but it only covers the cases those tests exercise.
- Decide based on the code and requirements. Accept a change only when you understand why it is correct. If a comment is a false positive, dismiss it for a specific reason rather than assuming all other comments are wrong.
Security deserves particular care. GitHub’s Copilot Chat responsible-use guidance says: “You should always review and test the code generated by Copilot Chat to ensure that it meets your requirements and is free of errors or security concerns.” This guidance is specifically about code generated by Copilot Chat; the practical caution also matters when evaluating AI-proposed fixes.

What a study or vendor claim can—and cannot—tell you
A result from one product tested on one set of changes should not be treated as a performance guarantee for all AI reviewers. The 2025 preprint’s reported misses are relevant evidence about its evaluation, not a universal rate. Likewise, a vendor’s promotional figure is not an independently established benchmark.
For example, CodeRabbit’s FAQ claims its tool “catches 95%+ of bugs.” That is a vendor claim, not an independently validated, broadly applicable detection statistic. A percentage without a clearly comparable test setup does not tell you how often a tool will catch the bugs in your codebase or how many incorrect comments it will produce.

Use AI review as an additional pass that can suggest questions and potential fixes. Keep tests, security checks and human judgment in the workflow. For consequential changes, make sure a reviewer understands the affected behavior and the evidence behind any accepted fix. Do not treat a quiet AI review as approval or let a confident explanation substitute for validating the code.
