What to Do When Windows Update Gets Stuck Downloading at 0 Percent

Restart your PC, check connectivity and disk space, then work through the Windows Update troubleshooter and later repair options in order.

If Windows Update appears stuck at 0%, start with the basics: restart your PC, confirm that it is connected to the internet, and check that enough disk space is available. A 0% display by itself does not establish that an update has failed; Microsoft says download and installation time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. It does not specify a universal waiting period for this symptom.

Start with the low-risk checks

  1. Restart the PC. Then open Windows Update again and see whether the download progresses.
  2. Check the internet connection. Make sure the PC is online. Connection speed and network settings can affect how long an update takes.
  3. Check available disk space. If storage is nearly full, free space before trying the update again.

These are Microsoft’s initial steps for an update showing 0% or 100%. The percentage alone is not enough to identify the cause. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance does not give a fixed time after which a 0% download should be considered failed.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Next to Windows Update, select Run and follow the prompts in Get Help.
  3. When the troubleshooter finishes, restart the PC, then return to Windows Update and check the download.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  2. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
  3. When it finishes, restart the PC, then return to Windows Update and check the download.

These version-specific routes and the restart-and-check follow-up are documented in Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

If the initial checks and troubleshooter do not help, Microsoft’s next option is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of its download cache folder, and start the service again. This removes cached update files so Windows can download them again; do not delete unrelated folders.

  1. Open the Start menu, type services, and open the Services app.
  2. Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
  3. In File Explorer, open C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, not the folder itself or other folders under C:Windows.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  6. Open Windows Update and check for updates again.

Microsoft documents this cache-reset approach in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Use command-line repair only if you are comfortable with it

For persistent update problems, Microsoft describes more advanced steps: renaming the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders from an administrator Command Prompt, then repairing Windows system files. These actions require administrator permissions. Microsoft says they are intended for people comfortable using the command line; if that does not describe you, do not proceed with these steps.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 stopped receiving free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. Troubleshooting a stalled download does not restore that ended support. This lifecycle notice is separate from the steps above for diagnosing an update that appears stuck.
