The biggest drawbacks of switching to Windows from Mac are the adjustment to different interface and shortcut conventions, the need to verify that your essential apps and Apple-linked workflows will work as expected, and the effort of moving your files and setup. These are practical tradeoffs, not automatic deal-breakers: check your own apps, devices, and habits before replacing your Mac with a Windows PC.
What changes in everyday use?
Menus, windows, and navigation
On a Mac, the menu bar, Dock, window controls, and trackpad gestures follow macOS conventions. Windows organizes these features differently, so familiar actions may take a different route even when the underlying task is available. Apple’s Mac guide describes those conventions, including two-finger scrolling and right-clicking.

Keyboard shortcuts
Mac workflows often use the Command key where Windows workflows commonly use Ctrl or other combinations. Window switching differs too: Microsoft’s guide for developers moving from Mac to Windows contrasts Command+Tab with Alt+Tab and describes using PowerToys Keyboard Manager to map shortcuts. Remapping can ease the transition, but it does not make every application behave identically.

Microsoft’s Mac-to-Windows developer guide focuses on development workflows, but its shortcut examples illustrate a broader point: expect a learning curve in everyday navigation. There is no established number of days or weeks in which everyone adjusts.

Will your essential apps and workflows work?
Check each app, not just its name
Before switching, list the applications you rely on and check the Windows version for each one. Confirm that it supports the features you actually use, and check whether your files and projects open cleanly. The existence of an app on both platforms does not guarantee identical features, settings, or workflows.
Microsoft’s developer guide covers Windows tools and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and identifies Visual Studio as the nearest Windows-native equivalent to Xcode for native Windows app development. That makes Visual Studio a relevant option for some developers, but not a drop-in replacement for every Xcode workflow. If you need Xcode-specific tools or processes, verify those requirements before choosing a Windows PC.
Check Apple services and device connections
If your routine depends on Apple services, shared data, or integration with other Apple devices, check the specific service and workflow you use on Windows. Don’t assume an equivalent exists—or that everything stops working—without verifying the details. The reviewed Apple and Microsoft materials do not provide a complete current compatibility list for Apple services, app purchases, or data formats.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Apple’s guide to moving from a Windows PC to a Mac describes Mac apps and migration in that direction; it is not proof that the reverse transfer carries every setting, file type, account, or app purchase to Windows. For important files, confirm the format and make sure you have a way to open them on the new PC.
How much work is moving your setup?
Replacing a Mac means more than copying documents. Plan to locate your files, reinstall or replace apps, sign in to accounts, restore relevant settings, and reconnect peripherals. Treat each part as a separate check rather than assuming that a migration feature documented for moving to a Mac will apply in reverse.
- List the apps and services you use regularly, including any that handle work-critical files.
- Check whether each app has a Windows version and whether it supports the features you need.
- Identify files, projects, or media that depend on a particular format or application.
- Check that essential peripherals and games support the Windows PC you plan to use.
- Make a backup and confirm you can access important accounts before changing computers.
What should you check on a Windows PC before switching?
Confirm the Windows version is supported
Don’t treat Windows 10 as the default for a new purchase: Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Check that the PC you choose runs a supported Windows version.

Check whether the PC is in S mode
This is a device-specific consideration, not a universal drawback of switching. Microsoft says Windows 11 in S mode runs only apps from Microsoft Store. Leaving S mode is free but permanent, so check whether the mode fits your app needs before changing it.

Are you replacing your Mac or testing Windows on it?
These are different choices. Buying a Windows PC means checking that computer’s Windows version, apps, and hardware. Running Windows virtually on your existing Apple silicon Mac has separate limitations and licensing considerations; they do not describe Windows on a Windows PC.
Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine on Apple silicon
Microsoft’s support information for Windows 11 on Macs with M1, M2, and M3 chips explains that Windows 11 Arm limitations in this virtualized setup can affect some apps, games, and hardware, including apps that rely on DirectX 12. It also describes unsupported nested-virtualization experiences.
For this virtualization scenario, Microsoft says a separate Windows 11 Pro license is required for each instance if you do not already have one. This is not a general license cost for buying a Windows PC.
Quick Recap
A pre-switch checklist
- Write down your non-negotiables. Include essential apps, Apple-linked services, developer tools, peripherals, games, and file formats.
- Verify app availability and feature parity. Check the Windows version of each essential app and confirm it supports your specific tasks.
- Test critical files and connections. Verify that important documents, projects, and devices work with the software and PC you intend to use.
- Decide whether this is a PC replacement or a virtual test. Apply the Apple-silicon virtualization caveats only if you plan to run Windows on an M1, M2, or M3 Mac.
- Plan for new conventions. Expect to learn Windows navigation and shortcuts; consider shortcut remapping if it suits your workflow.
- Check the selected PC’s Windows edition and mode. Confirm it runs a supported Windows version and determine whether it ships in S mode.
