To turn on Voice Isolation during an iPhone call, open Control Center while the call is active, tap Phone Controls, then choose Voice Isolation under Audio & Video. The feature requires iOS 16.4 or later and an iPhone XR, iPhone XS model, or later.

Start or answer a phone call and leave it active.

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.

Apple’s menu labels are shown in English; the wording can vary with your iPhone’s system language. The control appears in Control Center during the call, not as a switch in the main Settings app. Apple’s Voice Isolation instructions cover the available modes.

Check whether your iPhone supports it
For phone calls, Apple requires iOS 16.4 or later and lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later as compatible. If your iPhone is eligible but the option is missing, update iOS if needed and check Control Center while a call is active; the controls are associated with the app handling the call.

What the microphone modes do

Apple describes Voice Isolation as a mode that “Prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noises.” Apple does not provide a noise-reduction percentage or measured performance figure for this feature in its instructions, so results should not be expressed as a specific guaranteed amount of sound removed. Apple Support’s mode descriptions explain the distinctions.
Know when the selection applies
The selected Mic Mode applies to the app you are using and remains selected for that app until you choose another mode. If you make calls in more than one app, check the active app’s Control Center controls rather than assuming a change in one app changes all the others.

Do you need AirPods or another microphone?
No. Apple’s instructions for the iPhone Phone app do not require headphones or an external microphone. Apple also documents Voice Isolation for calls with certain AirPods, including AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3, but that is a separate use case; AirPods are not a requirement for the iPhone’s call setting. Apple’s AirPods call instructions describe that setup.
