The Best WeTransfer Alternatives: Choose by File Size and Workflow

The right WeTransfer alternative depends on file size, link expiry, account requirements and whether you need a one-off handoff or ongoing cloud collaboration.

There is no single best WeTransfer alternative for everyone. For a small, one-off transfer without an account, TransferNow lists a free tier up to 5 GB. For a larger free transfer, SwissTransfer is listed at up to 50 GB in a 2026 comparison, while Smash is listed as allowing unlimited-size transfers on its free tier, with uploads above a threshold queued. Those offers differ in retention, account requirements and delivery controls, so match the service to the file and how the recipient needs to access it.

Which WeTransfer alternative should you choose?

Start with the job, not a headline capacity. A temporary download link is useful for delivering finished files; a cloud drive is better when people need to keep working from shared files over time. Within transfer services, the practical differences are maximum size, link expiry, whether an account is needed, and whether you need features such as passwords or file requests.

  • Choose TransferNow if you want a no-account transfer up to 5 GB and value password protection or file reception.
  • Consider SwissTransfer for a large free transfer if its current limit and retention meet your needs; the cited 50 GB and 30-day figures come from Jotform’s 2026 comparison, not a current official Infomaniak plan page.
  • Consider Smash if a very large transfer is the priority and you can tolerate queueing on the free tier; Jotform’s comparison lists paid transfers up to 250 GB.
  • Choose Dropbox Transfer if you already use Dropbox and need to deliver finished files by link, rather than collaborate on them.
  • Use Google Drive or OneDrive when the recipient needs continuing access to shared cloud files or the workflow is tied to that productivity ecosystem.

TransferNow’s own comparison says SwissTransfer does not offer file reception. Check the providers’ live terms before sending important or time-sensitive files because limits and features can change.

How the main alternatives compare

Service What the cited source says Best fit and caveat
TransferNow Provider says its free tier supports transfers up to 5 GB without an account and includes password protection and file reception. Useful for straightforward sending or receiving. Larger transfers and extended professional controls require an account; verify current plan terms.
SwissTransfer Jotform’s 2026 comparison lists up to 50 GB free and 30-day retention. Potential fit for a large free transfer. Confirm the current limit and expiry with Infomaniak before relying on those comparison figures. TransferNow says SwissTransfer has no file-reception tool.
Smash Jotform’s comparison lists unlimited-size free transfers, with uploads above a threshold queued, and paid transfers up to 250 GB. Potential fit for very large files if queueing is acceptable. Confirm current queue and retention details with Smash.
Dropbox Transfer Dropbox says recipients can download from a shareable link without a Dropbox account; transfer size depends on plan. Good for delivering completed files from a Dropbox workflow. It is integrated with cloud storage rather than a standalone continuing collaboration space.
Google Drive or OneDrive Jotform identifies each as an alternative suited to its respective productivity ecosystem; it does not state a comparable transfer cap or expiry here. Better for ongoing storage and sharing than a one-off temporary delivery link.

Free alternative with no sign-up: what to check

TransferNow explicitly describes a free, no-account tier up to 5 GB. That makes it a direct option when avoiding signup matters and the file fits. The larger figures for SwissTransfer and Smash in Jotform’s 2026 comparison should not be treated as equivalent offers: the comparison also notes retention and queueing conditions, and the available material does not establish their current account requirements.

Before choosing a no-sign-up service, check these points on its current provider page:

  • Whether the sender can upload without registering, and whether the recipient can download without an account.
  • The maximum transfer size and any daily or recurring quota.
  • How long the link remains active and whether you can set its expiry.
  • Whether the link can be password-protected or limited to intended recipients.
  • Whether recipients can send files back, if you need file requests or reception.

Temporary delivery or cloud collaboration?

Use a transfer link for a handoff

A transfer service is generally the simpler fit when you have finished a file and want someone to download it. Dropbox describes Transfer as intended for files that do not need collaboration; recipients can download through a shareable link without creating a Dropbox account. The file’s size limit and expiry depend on the Dropbox plan.

Use cloud storage for shared work

Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox storage are more appropriate when people need to return to the same files, organize them alongside other documents, or collaborate over time. This is a different workflow from sending a temporary package, even if both approaches use links.

Expiry, access and security controls

Expiry is plan-dependent, not a universal property of a transfer link. Dropbox says transfers on Basic, Family and Plus expire after seven days. On certain other plans, the sender can choose a custom date; if no date is chosen, the default is 30 days. Check your plan before promising a recipient that a link will remain available.

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty

Security statements also need precise reading. WeTransfer says files are encrypted in transit and at rest, that only people with the transfer link can open them, and that content is not used to train AI. This is the provider’s statement; it does not establish end-to-end encryption. TransferNow says it offers encryption and antivirus scanning and describes an SSE-C option on some account plans. These claims do not, by themselves, prove that one service is more secure than another. For sensitive material, review the provider’s current access controls and decide whether sending a link is appropriate at all.

Make the choice by answering four questions

  1. How large is the file? Compare the provider’s current per-transfer maximum with your file size; do not rely on a comparison article’s figure without confirming it with the provider.
  2. How long does the recipient need access? Select a service and plan with suitable retention, and check whether expiry is fixed or configurable.
  3. Does either person need an account? Verify both upload and download requirements; a free label alone does not guarantee a no-sign-up workflow.
  4. Is this delivery or ongoing work? Use a transfer service for a handoff; use shared cloud storage when people need continuing access or collaboration.
