Meta is still growing quickly, but its latest reported quarter shows a clear point of weakness: Q2 2026 revenue rose 28% year over year while net income fell 14%. At the same time, the company is planning much higher capital spending. That makes the key question less whether Meta is still profitable—it is—and more whether its growing investment can produce returns that justify the cost.
What does “a bad year” mean for Meta?
The phrase is too vague to support a specific claim about Meta’s share performance. The available figures do not establish a defined one-year period or a total return for META stock, so they cannot show how much the shares gained or lost over that span—or prove that a particular earnings result caused a market move. The Associated Press did report that Meta shares fell after the Q2 2026 results, but that is not the same as measuring a “bad year.”

What the financial results do show is a profitable company with strong revenue growth and a recent year-over-year decline in quarterly net income. The headline’s defensible point is therefore about a business showing pressure in its latest profit figure while committing to substantially more investment, not proof of a year-long stock decline.
Why did profit fall while revenue kept growing?
In Q2 2026, Meta reported $60.8 billion in revenue, up 28% from the same quarter a year earlier, and net income of $15.85 billion, down 14%. The Associated Press attributed the profit decline to legal expenses and severance costs. Those costs help explain why earnings fell despite revenue growth; by themselves, they do not establish that Meta’s advertising business has structurally weakened.

For the full 2025 fiscal year, Meta reported net income of $60.46 billion and diluted earnings per share of $23.49. Those annual figures provide a different time frame from the Q2 comparison: the latest quarterly decline does not erase the company’s substantial full-year profit, but the annual result also cannot tell investors what caused a later quarter’s change.

How large is Meta’s spending commitment?
Meta’s capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, were $72.22 billion in 2025. Its 2026 forecasts have risen over time. These are forward-looking estimates, not amounts already spent:
| When the figure was given | 2026 capital-expenditure forecast | Source and status |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2025 prepared remarks | $115 billion–$135 billion | Meta management forecast, published with its Q4 2025 prepared remarks |
| After Q2 2026 | $130 billion–$145 billion | Later range reported by the Associated Press after Q2 2026; not the earlier company forecast |
The increase in the later range signals a larger planned investment, but the figures do not establish that all capital spending is exclusively for AI. Nor does spending by itself demonstrate that the investment is earning an adequate return. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K reports the prior-year capital expenditure figure; the dated forecast ranges come from Meta’s Q4 2025 prepared remarks and the AP report following Q2 2026.

Is the investment paying off yet?
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the Q2 2026 statement, as quoted by the Associated Press, that “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” That is management’s description of the opportunity, not independent evidence that the investments have already generated returns sufficient to cover their cost.
Revenue growth is a sign of operating momentum, but it does not settle the investment question. A useful assessment would compare ongoing capital spending with operating cash generation and with the returns Meta earns from the infrastructure over time. The figures available here do not quantify free cash flow or returns on invested infrastructure, so they do not establish whether AI-related spending is paying off.

What does Meta expect next?
After Q2 2026, Meta guided to Q3 revenue of $61 billion–$64 billion. The company also said it expected 2026 operating income to exceed 2025 operating income. These are management expectations, not reported outcomes. They point to continued growth ambitions even as the company plans higher capital expenditure; subsequent results will show whether revenue and operating income develop as forecast.

What could put those expectations at risk?
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies legal and regulatory developments that could adversely affect advertising revenue, including issues involving privacy and data use, competition, youth safety, consumer protection, and advertising rules. The filing describes risk factors, not a forecast that any specific change will occur or a measurement of its effect.
There is also execution risk: Meta must convert a much larger infrastructure investment into durable business results. The figures above do not resolve what return the spending will produce. For an investor assessing the company, revenue growth, net income and operating income, spending, and results against guidance are distinct signals—not substitutes for one another.

What the balance sheet adds—and what it does not
At the end of 2025, Meta reported $81.59 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities, alongside $58.74 billion in long-term debt. These figures provide balance-sheet context for the company’s scale, but they do not measure free cash flow, prove that planned spending will be affordable on any particular terms, or show whether the investment will earn an adequate return.
