It combines six games, modern online services, current-console performance and PC flexibility, while preserving a Classic graphics option for Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Choose an original Xbox or Xbox 360 copy only when preserving the older hardware and presentation matters more than convenience and online support.
The short answer
MCC is the practical default because it puts Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4 in one package. Halo Support describes it as the way to play six Halo games spanning more than ten years. You can install it on a current Xbox or Windows PC, use contemporary matchmaking and services, and switch the first two games to their Classic visual presentation when you want the original-era look.

The best platform depends on what you value. Series X is the strongest living-room option, Series S is the less expensive current-console route, and PC gives you the most control over resolution, frame-rate targets, display settings and input devices. An original Xbox or Xbox 360 remains the strictest authenticity choice, but the Xbox 360 online service sunset on January 13, 2022 means it is no longer the complete modern multiplayer solution.

What MCC contains
| Game | Included in the collection | Classic-graphics toggle | Story position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary | Yes | Yes; switch between Anniversary and Classic visuals | First release in the recommended play order |
| Halo 2 Anniversary | Yes | Yes; switch between Anniversary and Classic visuals | Second in release order |
| Halo 3 | Yes | No equivalent Anniversary switch | Third in release order |
| Halo 3: ODST | Yes | No equivalent Anniversary switch | Side story set during the Halo 2 era |
| Halo: Reach | Yes | No equivalent Anniversary switch | Prequel released after Halo 3 |
| Halo 4 | Yes | No equivalent Anniversary switch | Sixth game in release order |
Reach and ODST were added after MCC’s original 2014 release. Their availability can therefore look different from the other campaigns, especially if you are looking at an older Xbox entitlement or a listing that separates individual add-ons.

Choose Xbox or PC
| Platform | What it does best | Important specifications or caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Highest-quality console image and a simple couch setup | Halo Support lists 4K output at 60 or 120 Hz, an adjustable 70–120-degree field of view and four-player split-screen at 60 frames per second. Your display must support the selected refresh mode. |
| Xbox Series S | Lower-cost access to the current Xbox version | Halo Support lists 1080p output at 60 or 120 Hz. It is a sensible choice for a 1080p television or monitor. |
| Windows PC | Settings flexibility, mouse-and-keyboard play and hardware choice | The official installation guidance lists Steam, the Microsoft Store and a PC Game Pass plan that includes MCC. Performance depends on your PC configuration and display. |
| Xbox 360 | Original-console hardware and an older, more period-authentic setup | Online services for affected Halo games were sunset on January 13, 2022. Treat this as an offline or authenticity-focused route rather than the best modern multiplayer option. |
Pick Series X when image quality and the living room come first
Series X is the clearest console recommendation if you own a 4K display or want the strongest combination of resolution, high-refresh support and local multiplayer. The documented 4K, 60-or-120-Hz modes are output targets, not a guarantee that every television, cable or game setting will run at 120 Hz. Set the console and display to a compatible mode before troubleshooting the game.
Pick Series S for a simpler 1080p setup
Series S follows the same current-console path but targets 1080p. If your screen is 1080p, the lower output target may be all you need. It still gives you current platform access, modern services and the MCC feature set, including the Classic visual options for the first two games.
Pick PC for control and upgrade flexibility
PC is the better fit if you want to choose between controller and mouse and keyboard, adjust graphics settings around your hardware, or play on an ultrawide or high-refresh monitor. You can buy MCC through Steam or the Microsoft Store, or use a PC Game Pass subscription whose applicable plan includes it. Because Game Pass catalogs and entitlements vary by region and plan, check the storefront shown for your account before subscribing.
How close is MCC to the original games?
MCC is a remastered package, not an untouched disc dump. The first two entries deliberately preserve both eras: during Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary, use the in-game Classic graphics toggle to return to the original visual presentation, then switch back to the Anniversary presentation whenever you want the remastered artwork.

The same switch does not exist for Halo 3, ODST, Reach or Halo 4. If your definition of classic means original rendering on original hardware for every title, an Xbox 360 copy is the stricter match for those games. That trade-off is substantial: the older console route gives up the current MCC service model and the online functionality that was affected by the 2022 Xbox 360 sunset.
Use this authenticity hierarchy
- Best balance: MCC on Series X|S or PC, with Classic graphics enabled for the first two games.
- Most authentic for Combat Evolved and Halo 2: MCC’s Classic graphics mode, which avoids switching hardware while retaining the original visual option.
- Most authentic across the later 360-era games: original Xbox 360 software and hardware, accepting the loss of affected legacy online services.
Play in release order or story chronology?
For a first playthrough, use release order: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4. Halo Support’s quick-start guidance specifically says to begin with the Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign when you want the order in which the games released. This sequence lets you experience the series’ mechanics, presentation and narrative reveals as players originally did.
ODST is a side story set during the Halo 2 era. Playing it after finishing Halo 2 keeps its setting and references from interrupting the main trilogy’s progression. It is not a replacement for Halo 3; it is a separate campaign with its own perspective and structure.
Returning players may prefer chronological story order: Reach, Combat Evolved, Halo 2, ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4. That order starts with the prequel and follows the timeline, but it also means beginning with a later-developed game before seeing how the original mechanics and storytelling evolved. Neither order changes the available campaigns; the choice is about context and pacing.

What to buy and how the entitlements work
MCC can be obtained as a one-time purchase on Xbox or Windows, or through a qualifying Game Pass subscription. The exact Game Pass plan and regional storefront matter, so verify that the plan shown for your account includes MCC rather than assuming every Game Pass tier does.
Reach and ODST are the common entitlement complication
On Xbox, the Reach and ODST campaigns and Firefight content can appear as separate purchases. On PC, the official entitlement information says they are included with MCC or can be bought separately; Game Pass access depends on the subscription you use. If either campaign appears locked after installation, open the game’s store or entitlement page for your platform and confirm that the campaign and its Firefight component are included in the purchase you made.
Check an Xbox One-labeled listing carefully
Some store or retail results use the phrase Halo: The Master Chief Collection Xbox One. Before paying, read the platform and included-content fields rather than relying on the title alone. Confirm that the listing grants the Xbox console entitlement you intend to use and that Reach and ODST are covered if you want the complete six-game set.

A qualifying subscription is useful if you want to play several Game Pass titles and do not need permanent ownership. A one-time purchase is simpler for a long-term replay library and avoids losing access if the game leaves a subscription catalog. Because availability is regional and can change by plan, treat the storefront’s current entitlement notice as authoritative at the time you buy.

Installation and first-time setup
Xbox Series X|S
- Open the Xbox Store and locate MCC, or open your owned games library if you already have a license.
- Start the installation and review the selectable game components. Install the campaigns and multiplayer components you intend to use; this prevents downloading content you do not need immediately.
- Launch MCC and check the campaign list. If Reach or ODST is marked unavailable, return to the store or your game’s add-on management screen and verify its separate entitlement.
- Open the video settings before starting a campaign. On Series X, select a display mode compatible with your television’s 4K and refresh-rate capabilities; on Series S, use a mode appropriate for a 1080p display.
- For Combat Evolved or Halo 2, use the campaign’s visual toggle to choose Anniversary or Classic graphics. The setting can be changed while you play.
Windows PC
- Choose one supported route: Steam, the Microsoft Store or a PC Game Pass plan that includes MCC.
- Install MCC from the library associated with that purchase or subscription. Keep enough storage available for the campaigns and multiplayer components you select.
- On first launch, open the game’s video and input settings. Select your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, then choose controller or mouse-and-keyboard controls.
- Check the campaign tiles for Reach and ODST. If either is locked, verify the entitlement in the same storefront where you installed MCC; ownership in one PC storefront does not automatically mean ownership in another.
- Start Combat Evolved or Halo 2 and select Classic graphics if you want the original presentation. Leave Anniversary graphics enabled when you prefer the remastered artwork.
Make a deliberate first-playthrough profile
- Use release order for a first series run.
- Enable subtitles and adjust field of view to your comfort, especially on a monitor viewed at close range.
- Choose normal difficulty unless you already know the encounters; increase difficulty after learning each game’s movement, shield and weapon systems.
- Keep campaign and multiplayer settings separate in your mind: a visual preference that helps you read a campaign level may not be the setting you want for competitive play.
Campaign co-op, split-screen and online play
MCC supports campaign and multiplayer options on current Xbox and Windows platforms. Series X|S documentation specifically lists four-player split-screen at 60 frames per second, making a current Xbox the easiest choice for local couch sessions. Connect the required controllers before launching the campaign and verify that each player profile is recognized by the console.
For online sessions, MCC is the appropriate modern route because its titles were rebuilt for current services. The 2022 Xbox 360 shutdown does not apply to MCC’s modern service implementation. That distinction matters if you want matchmaking, online co-op or a maintained platform rather than an offline replay.
PC is generally the most flexible option for online voice, display and input setups, but every participant should use a compatible MCC platform and version. If a friend cannot join, first confirm that everyone owns or can access the same campaign, has installed the relevant content and is using the same current MCC release channel.
When an original Xbox 360 is still the right choice
Choose original hardware when the physical controller feel, older dashboard, disc ownership or period-correct presentation is the point of the exercise. It can also be useful for an offline replay when you already own the discs and console.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not choose it expecting the old online experience to remain intact. Halo Support states that Xbox 360 game servers for affected Halo games were turned off on January 13, 2022, sunsetting that service. Campaigns and local modes remain the reason to use the hardware; current online play belongs on MCC.
A practical two-system approach is possible: use MCC for online sessions, modern display output and the first two games’ Classic toggle, then keep the 360 connected when you specifically want its original software environment. That gives you authenticity without making the older console carry responsibilities its retired services can no longer provide.
Save data and moving between devices
Most MCC save data transfers among Xbox, the Xbox PC app and Steam. Halo Support includes completed missions and playlists among the data that can carry across those platforms. That makes it feasible to continue a campaign on another supported device instead of restarting every mission.

Common problems and the quickest fixes
A campaign is missing after installation
- Open the platform’s MCC add-on or manage-content screen and check whether the campaign is installed, not merely listed in the library.
- Verify Reach and ODST entitlements separately; they may not be included in an older Xbox purchase.
- If you use Game Pass, confirm that your exact plan and region currently include MCC and the requested content.
Classic graphics are not available
The visual toggle is documented for Combat Evolved and Halo 2. It is not a general switch for Halo 3, ODST, Reach or Halo 4. If you are trying to find it in one of those later games, nothing is wrong with the installation; those titles do not have the same Anniversary/Classic option.
The image is limited to 60 Hz
- Confirm that your television or monitor supports the selected refresh rate.
- On Series X, check that the display path supports the chosen 4K and 120-Hz combination; the console’s documented capability does not override a display or cable limitation.
- On Series S, remember that the documented output target is 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz.
- On PC, check both the operating-system display setting and MCC’s in-game setting.
An old Xbox 360 cannot connect to Halo services
This is expected for services affected by the January 13, 2022 sunset. Use MCC on a current Xbox or Windows PC for modern matchmaking and online co-op; keep the 360 for local or offline play.
Progress is missing on another platform
- Launch MCC on the original device and wait for synchronization to complete.
- Use the same platform account associated with the save.
- Open the campaign or playlist screen on the destination device and allow it time to download the synchronized data.
- If only some progress appears, remember that the documented transfer covers most save data, not an unconditional promise that every local setting moves.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One complete modern collection | MCC on Series X|S or PC | Six campaigns, current services and one installation. |
| Best console picture | Series X | Documented 4K output at 60 or 120 Hz, adjustable 70–120-degree FOV and four-player split-screen at 60 FPS. |
| Lower-cost current Xbox | Series S | Documented 1080p output at 60 or 120 Hz with the same MCC route. |
| Maximum PC control | Windows PC | Steam, Microsoft Store and qualifying PC Game Pass routes, plus configurable hardware and input. |
| Original presentation for every 360-era title | Xbox 360 software | Most period-authentic, but affected online services ended January 13, 2022. |
| Original look for the first two games without old hardware | MCC Classic graphics | Combat Evolved and Halo 2 provide the documented visual toggle. |
Final recommendation
Buy or access MCC on the platform you already use: Series X for the best console image and local play, Series S for a 1080p current-console setup, or Windows PC for settings and input flexibility. Play the campaigns in release order, enable Classic graphics for Combat Evolved and Halo 2 when authenticity matters, and treat Reach and ODST as entitlements to verify rather than assumptions. Choose an original Xbox 360 only when its hardware and offline authenticity are more important than modern online services.
