For most people, a used NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 with 24GB of VRAM is the best local-AI upgrade. Its memory capacity accommodates larger quantized models than 12GB cards, while used prices are generally below an RTX 4090 and NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem remains the least troublesome choice for many tools. Buy a used RTX 3060 12GB if price is the priority, an RTX 4090 if speed and latency matter more than cost, or a Radeon RX 7900 XTX if you are comfortable checking ROCm support for your exact operating system and application.
There is no universally fastest card for every local model. Model quantization, context length, batch size, inference engine, drivers and cooling all change results. The most useful first decision is therefore memory capacity, followed by software compatibility and only then raw speed.

At a glance: which used GPU should you buy?
| GPU | VRAM and architecture | Best fit | Indicative used pricing | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 3090 | 24GB GDDR6X, Ampere; 10,496 CUDA cores | Best overall capacity-per-dollar for local AI | About $700–$1,000 in current listings; one guide describes roughly $750–$850 as fair | High power draw, heat and possible memory wear |
| GeForce RTX 4090 | 24GB GDDR6X, Ada Lovelace; 16,384 CUDA cores | Lower latency, faster generation and heavier concurrent use | Not stated in the available market guidance; normally carries a premium over a 3090 | Expensive for the same nominal VRAM capacity |
| GeForce RTX 3060 12GB | 12GB; NVIDIA GeForce support in Ollama | Small models, experimentation and the lowest entry price | About $170–$220 described as a fair used range | Less room for large models, long context or multiple sessions |
| Radeon RX 7900 XTX | 24GB, RDNA3; 96 compute units | Linux users willing to validate ROCm | Not stated in the available market guidance | Support depends on GPU, operating system, ROCm version and backend |
| Modified RTX 2080 Ti | Reports describe pre-modded 22GB cards | Enthusiast experiments only | Not stated | Unusual firmware, modification, cooling and seller risks |
Prices are indicative rather than guarantees. Shipping, taxes, warranty, condition and the seller’s return policy can change the real cost substantially.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy VRAM is the deciding specification
Local language models must keep their weights and working data in GPU memory to run efficiently. A card with more VRAM can load a larger quantized model, accommodate a longer context window or leave room for more than one session. If the model does not fit, software may offload part of it to system RAM; that can make interaction much slower and changes the performance comparison completely.

The practical capacity breakpoints in this group are 12GB and 24GB. A 12GB RTX 3060 is useful for smaller quantized models and learning the workflow, but it gives you less headroom for larger models, long prompts and concurrent users. A 24GB RTX 3090, RTX 4090 or RX 7900 XTX gives the same broad memory tier; the 4090 mainly buys speed rather than access to a larger class of model.
VRAM is not the only memory-related specification. The RTX 3090 has a 384-bit memory interface and GDDR6X, and its memory bandwidth helps when an inference workload is moving large tensors repeatedly. Architecture, CUDA or ROCm kernels, quantization format and the application can still make one card behave very differently from another. Do not treat a wider bus or a larger core count as a guaranteed tokens-per-second result.
1. Used RTX 3090 24GB: the default recommendation
The RTX 3090 is the strongest general-purpose used choice when your priority is fitting larger local models without paying RTX 4090 money. NVIDIA specifies 10,496 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X memory, a 384-bit memory interface, Ampere architecture and third-generation Tensor Cores. Ollama lists the RTX 3090 among its supported GeForce GPUs.

Its value comes from capacity first. With 24GB available, you have substantially more room than a 12GB card for quantized weights, context and runtime overhead. The card is also widely recognized by CUDA-based local-AI applications, so setup tends to involve fewer compatibility decisions than an AMD alternative.
Who should choose it
- Users who want the largest practical model capacity per dollar in the used market.
- Builders who already own a case with room for a large, heavy card and a suitable power supply.
- People using several CUDA-oriented tools, not only one application.
What to inspect
- Ask for memory-temperature readings during a sustained load, not only an idle screenshot.
- Listen for rattling or grinding fan bearings and check that all fans start and stop normally.
- Inspect the power connector and PCB for discoloration, melted plastic or repair marks.
- Ask whether the card was used for cryptocurrency mining and whether thermal pads or the cooler were replaced.
NVIDIA lists NVLink support for the RTX 3090, but multi-GPU model sharding and software support vary by application. Do not buy a second 3090 on the assumption that every local-AI program will combine the cards automatically; verify the specific backend first.

2. Used RTX 4090 24GB: pay for speed
The RTX 4090 keeps the same nominal 24GB capacity as the 3090 but moves to NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace architecture and 16,384 CUDA cores. It is the better used purchase when faster generation, lower response latency or heavier concurrent workloads justify a premium.
Because both cards have 24GB, moving from a 3090 to a 4090 generally expands performance more than model size. That distinction matters: if your current problem is that a model will not fit, a 4090 may not solve it. If the model already fits and you want quicker responses or more simultaneous sessions, the newer architecture can make the premium worthwhile.
When the premium makes sense
- You regularly notice latency while generating or serving multiple users.
- Your case, power supply and cooling are already designed for a very high-end card.
- The price gap after warranty and shipping is acceptable to you.
The available market guidance does not establish a reliable used-price range for the 4090, so compare current listings yourself rather than assuming a fixed percentage over a 3090. Give extra weight to remaining warranty, return terms and the condition of the card’s high-power connector.
3. Used RTX 3060 12GB: the budget entry point
A used RTX 3060 12GB is the sensible low-cost option for experimenting with local AI. Current used-market guidance places fair examples around $170–$220. Ollama lists the RTX 3060 among supported GeForce GPUs, and NVIDIA’s CUDA support makes it a straightforward starting point for many tutorials and applications.
The limitation is capacity, not whether it can run local models at all. Twelve gigabytes leaves less room for larger quantized models, long context windows, additional prompt-cache data and concurrent sessions. You may need a smaller quantization or partial CPU offload sooner than you would with a 24GB card.

Choose the 3060 when
- You are learning Ollama or another local inference tool and want to minimize upfront risk.
- Your intended models are known to fit within 12GB with your chosen context length.
- Your existing PC has a modest power supply or limited airflow.
If you expect to upgrade again soon because of model-size limits, calculate the total cost of buying a 3060 now and replacing it later. A clean used 3090 can be better value over the entire ownership period even when its initial price is higher.

AMD’s ROCm specifications identify the Radeon RX 7900 XTX as an RDNA3 GPU with 24GB of memory and 96 compute units. Ollama lists the RX 7900 XTX among supported Radeon GPUs. That makes it a legitimate 24GB local-AI option, especially for Linux users who are comfortable managing an AMD software stack.
The qualification is important: AMD’s compatibility matrix makes support dependent on the exact GPU, operating system and ROCm version. ROCm does not support every AMD GPU, and an application can support a card only on some combinations of drivers and operating systems. Check the current ROCm matrix and the documentation for your intended inference engine before buying. Confirm the required ROCm version, distribution and installation method rather than relying on a generic “AMD supported” label.
Who should consider it
- Linux users who already understand ROCm packages, driver versions and GPU permissions.
- Buyers who find a well-tested 7900 XTX at a substantially better total cost than a comparable NVIDIA card.
- Users whose chosen application explicitly documents the 7900 XTX on their operating system.
When to choose NVIDIA instead
Choose the RTX 3090 or 3060 when you want the lower-friction path across a mixture of local-AI programs, guides and CUDA-focused extensions. AMD can be entirely workable, but it requires more deliberate compatibility checking and may need different installation steps after an operating-system or ROCm update.
5. Modified RTX 2080 Ti 22GB cards: an enthusiast gamble
Pre-modified RTX 2080 Ti cards with reported 22GB configurations appear in the enthusiast market. They are not a normal plug-and-play product tier. The memory modification, firmware, cooling solution and seller quality all need verification, and reduced-precision support or application compatibility may not match newer cards.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Only consider one if you can verify the exact memory amount with a live diagnostic, obtain a meaningful return window and understand how to recover from firmware or cooling problems. For a first local-AI upgrade, a standard 24GB RTX 3090 is a much safer recommendation.
Software compatibility: CUDA, ROCm and Ollama
Your inference software determines whether a theoretically suitable card is useful in practice. Ollama’s published GPU list includes the RTX 3090 and RTX 3060 under GeForce and the RX 7900 XTX under Radeon, while noting that ROCm does not cover every AMD GPU. Treat that list as application-specific support, not a promise that every other local-AI package will behave identically.
NVIDIA and CUDA
NVIDIA is generally the lower-friction option for a mixed local-AI setup. CUDA-oriented tools, extensions and examples are common, and the 3090 and 3060 are explicitly listed by Ollama. You still need a driver version compatible with your operating system and application, but fewer variables usually need to be checked than with ROCm.
AMD and ROCm
For an RX 7900 XTX, validate three things before purchase: the exact operating system, the ROCm version supported there and the backend used by your application. AMD’s compatibility matrix is the authority for that combination. A card that is supported on one Linux distribution or ROCm release may require different packages—or be unsupported—on another.

How to buy a used GPU without inheriting someone else’s problem
- Define the workload. Write down the applications you will run, the largest model and quantization you expect to use, your target context length and whether more than one user will connect at once. This determines whether 12GB is enough or 24GB is the safer tier.
- Confirm the exact card. Ask for a photograph of the label and a live diagnostic. GPU-Z can display the model and memory, while
nvidia-smican verify an NVIDIA card’s detected name and VRAM from a running system. For an AMD card, request an equivalent live output from the seller’s operating system. - Request a sustained test. A short boot test proves little. Ask for a load test long enough to expose rising memory temperatures, fan faults, crashes, visual artifacts or memory errors. Request screenshots that show temperatures and clock behavior during the test.
- Check physical condition. Examine fans, heatsink fins, screws, the I/O bracket and all power connectors. Heavy dust, missing screws, oil residue, repaired plastic or a connector that has browned from heat are reasons to reduce the offer or walk away.
- Verify your system first. Measure case clearance, check the number and type of power connectors, confirm the PSU’s wattage and inspect front-to-back airflow. A 3090 or 4090 can need substantially stronger cooling than a 3060.
- Confirm the software path. Install or review the current Ollama GPU documentation for your platform. For AMD, match the exact GPU, operating system and ROCm version in AMD’s compatibility documentation before committing.
- Price the protection, not just the card. Add shipping and tax, then compare warranty length, return window, seller reputation and payment protection. A slightly more expensive card with a real return period can be cheaper than a “bargain” that fails after delivery.
- Test immediately after arrival. Record the serial number and condition before installation. Verify VRAM, run your intended inference workload, monitor temperatures and listen for fan noise while the return period is still open.
Power, cooling and physical fit
High-capacity cards can turn a local-AI upgrade into a system-engineering project. The RTX 3090 and RTX 4090 are large, heavy boards that can restrict adjacent slots and challenge compact cases. Check the card’s length, height and thickness against your case, including room for power cables and airflow.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Inspect the PSU’s rated wattage and dedicated connectors rather than relying on adapters of unknown quality. Route cables without sharply bending them at the card’s connector. Use front intake and rear or top exhaust fans so heat from a long inference session does not accumulate around the GPU.
For a used 3090, memory temperature is especially important because GDDR6X can run hot under sustained loads. A card that passes a five-minute benchmark but overheats or becomes unstable during a long model session is not a good purchase. The seller’s test should show behavior over time, not only a peak score.
Choosing by priority
Buy the RTX 3090 if capacity and value come first
Select the 24GB 3090 when you want the broadest practical model headroom per dollar and can handle its power and cooling requirements. It is the balanced recommendation for most buyers.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBuy the RTX 4090 if response time is the constraint
Select the 24GB 4090 when your models already fit and faster generation or concurrent serving is worth paying more for. Do not expect its equal VRAM capacity to unlock a fundamentally larger model class by itself.
Buy the RTX 3060 if your budget is fixed
Select the 12GB 3060 for smaller quantized models, learning and experimentation at the lowest purchase price. Treat the reduced capacity as a deliberate limit, not a minor specification difference.
Buy the RX 7900 XTX if you are ready to own the ROCm decision
Select the 24GB AMD card only after confirming your exact operating system, ROCm release and application backend. Its memory capacity is attractive, but compatibility work is part of the purchase.
What not to use as a buying shortcut
- A single advertised tokens-per-second number: no universal figure applies across model sizes, quantization, context, drivers and inference engines.
- CUDA-core count alone: architecture and software kernels matter, so core counts from different generations are not a complete speed ranking.
- VRAM without a workload plan: 24GB helps only if your model, context and runtime data fit and your application can use the card.
- The cheapest listing: missing warranty, worn memory, damaged connectors and poor cooling can erase the initial saving.
Bottom line
For a general local-AI upgrade, buy a well-tested used RTX 3090 24GB with a return window and enough PSU and airflow. It combines the most useful capacity tier with broad NVIDIA software support and usually costs less than a used RTX 4090. Choose the RTX 3060 12GB when the budget is the deciding factor, the RTX 4090 when speed is worth its premium, and the RX 7900 XTX when you have verified ROCm compatibility for your exact setup.
