Rockstar has not published GTA 6-specific networking requirements; the checklist below applies the latest official GTA Online console guidance to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ahead of Rockstar’s November 19, 2026 release date.
What to set before launch
Start with the least invasive checks. An outage, maintenance window, congested Wi-Fi channel or restrictive NAT can look like a game fault, so changing advanced router settings first can waste time. Work through this order:

- Check Rockstar’s service-status page before changing local settings.
- Restart the console and router.
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi when a cable run is practical.
- Run the console’s built-in internet and NAT tests.
- Inspect firewall rules and port forwarding only if NAT remains restricted or sessions fail.
- Try manual DNS only as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guaranteed way to lower ping.
Rockstar’s published connection targets are 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. Those figures come from Rockstar Games Customer Support material published in 2024 and are baseline throughput guidance, not a promise that every connection with those speeds will have low latency.

Run the PS5 connection test
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Connection Status.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Check download speed, upload speed and the reported NAT type. Test at the time you normally play, because a quiet daytime result can hide evening congestion.

Choose the most compatible NAT type
PlayStation reports three NAT categories. Type 1 can play with any NAT type and is the least restricted. Type 2 can play with open or moderate NAT. Type 3 can play only with open NAT, so it is the category most likely to cause matchmaking, joining or voice-chat conflicts. Rockstar Games Customer Support describes the principle this way: “A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues.”

Do not try to force Type 1 by putting the console directly on the public internet. A correctly configured Type 2 connection is generally the sensible home-network goal.
PS5 ports documented for PlayStation Network and GTA Online
Use port forwarding only when your router or firewall troubleshooting indicates that NAT is restricted. Reserve a consistent local IP address for the PS5 first if your router requires one, then follow that router’s current forwarding interface.

Forward only the documented ports that your troubleshooting requires. Opening unrelated ranges can create security exposure and may alter NAT behavior in unexpected ways. Apply a rule, reboot the router and PS5, then run the connection and in-game tests again. Remove temporary rules that do not improve the result.
Optional manual DNS on PS5
DNS resolves service names; it does not directly determine the physical route or guarantee a lower in-game ping. If automatic DNS is unreliable, Rockstar documents Google’s public DNS values as an optional test:

- Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Highlight your connection, press the options button and choose Advanced Settings.
- Leave IP Address Settings on Automatic.
- Set DHCP Host Name to Don’t Specify.
- Set DNS Settings to Manual.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 as Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as Secondary DNS.
- Leave Proxy Server on Don’t Use and MTU Settings on Automatic.
- Save, test the connection and compare stability with your previous automatic setting.
Record the original DNS values before changing them so you can restore the previous configuration if name resolution becomes slower or a network service stops working.
Xbox Series X|S settings for GTA 6
Test internet access and NAT
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Settings.
- Choose General > Network Settings.
- If NAT is shown as Unknown, select Test NAT Type.
Run the test after the console has fully connected to Xbox network services. If the result changes between tests, suspect router state, double NAT or an upstream provider issue rather than a game setting.
Understand Xbox NAT labels
Xbox describes Open as the most compatible state. Moderate can play with Open or Moderate. Strict can play only with Open, which can prevent some players from joining one another. Rockstar Games Customer Support summarizes the goal as: “A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts and connectivity issues with other players.”

The GTA Online UDP ports are the same in Rockstar’s PlayStation and Xbox guidance; the platform network ports differ. If you forward ports, reserve the Xbox’s local address and use the exact protocol shown. A router reboot and a fresh NAT test are required after changes.

- Open Settings > General > Network Settings.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Choose Alternate MAC Address.
- Select Clear, then restart the Xbox when prompted.
This resets the console’s saved alternate hardware address. It does not replace a restrictive router policy, double NAT or an outage.
Optional DNS on Xbox
For IPv4, enter 8.8.8.8 as the primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary DNS. For IPv6, Rockstar documents 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844. The path is Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings > Manual. Save the existing values first, test the connection, and revert if reliability or lookup times worsen.
Ethernet versus Wi-Fi
Why wired is the default recommendation
An Ethernet connection removes radio interference, channel contention and many distance-related variations between the console and router. It normally produces more consistent latency and fewer short disconnects, even when a Wi-Fi speed test reports ample bandwidth. Rockstar specifically advises wireless users to try Ethernet when connection problems persist.
Connect a Cat6 Ethernet cable from the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S to a LAN port on the router, disable any unused wireless connection on the console if it keeps selecting Wi-Fi, and rerun the network test. A cable does not fix an overloaded ISP link or bad router firmware, but it isolates the home-radio portion of the problem.
When Wi-Fi is reasonable
Wi-Fi can work well when the console is close to the router, the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band is clean, and other devices are not saturating airtime. Keep the router in an open, elevated location; avoid placing it behind a television, inside a cabinet or beside large metal objects. If possible, use a dedicated modern band for the console and reduce simultaneous large downloads, cloud backups and 4K streams during play.

If wired works but Wi-Fi does not, the issue is local wireless conditions rather than GTA settings. A mesh or newer router is a conditional upgrade for that situation, not a requirement stated by Rockstar.
Router, firewall and double-NAT troubleshooting
Use a least-invasive sequence
- Confirm Rockstar services are operational and no maintenance window is active.
- Close the game, power off the console and unplug the router.
- Leave the router unplugged for about 10 minutes, then reconnect it.
- Wait for the internet connection to stabilize, restart the console and launch the game.
- Run the PS5 or Xbox NAT test.
- If NAT remains Type 3 or Strict, inspect the router’s UPnP, firewall and WAN settings.
Rockstar notes that a router or firewall may need adjustment when NAT is restricted and that opening or forwarding other ports can affect NAT. Check whether another router, modem-router gateway or managed Wi-Fi system sits between the console and the internet. Two devices performing address translation create double NAT, which commonly produces a restricted result. Put the gateway into bridge mode only when you understand the provider’s instructions, or place the downstream router in the gateway’s supported passthrough mode.
Port forwarding without overexposing the console
Port forwarding sends selected inbound traffic to one device. Give the console a DHCP reservation so the destination address does not change, then create only the required TCP or UDP rules. Do not place the PS5 or Xbox in a DMZ by default; DMZ exposure is broader than forwarding the documented ports and is unnecessary for a normal first-line setup. After testing, remove rules that provide no benefit.
Why UPnP can produce changing results
UPnP lets the console request temporary mappings automatically. It can solve NAT restrictions with less manual work, but different routers implement it differently and stale mappings can survive until a reboot. If NAT alternates between Open and Moderate, reboot the router, check for firmware updates and verify that only one device is acting as the main router.
What DNS can and cannot change
DNS affects how quickly a hostname is resolved and whether a resolver is reachable. It does not increase the bandwidth purchased from your provider, bypass a distant game server or guarantee lower latency once a session is established. Automatic DNS is a sensible default. Manual Google DNS values are useful when your provider’s resolver fails, times out or returns inconsistent results; compare actual matchmaking and stability rather than assuming a numerical improvement.

Keep a record of the previous IPv4 and IPv6 DNS settings. If the console reports slower sign-in, failed store pages or intermittent name-resolution errors after the change, return to Automatic and retest.
Bandwidth, latency and household traffic
Meeting Rockstar’s 7.5 Mbps download target and 1 Mbps recommended upload target does not eliminate lag. Upload saturation is particularly damaging because acknowledgements and voice traffic compete with backups, security-camera uploads and livestreams. Pause large transfers, enable a router’s traffic-priority or quality-of-service feature if it is reliable, and avoid aggressive bandwidth limits that starve other services.
Latency spikes can come from ISP congestion, a saturated cable or fiber segment, Wi-Fi retransmissions, bufferbloat or a faulty modem. Compare a wired test with Wi-Fi, test at several times of day, and note whether only GTA sessions fail or every online service does. A problem affecting all services belongs with the network or ISP; a problem limited to Rockstar services may be an outage or service-side incident.

Launch-day checklist
- Install the latest PS5 or Xbox system update and the game update before launch.
- Run the console network test on the connection you will actually use.
- Prefer Ethernet; if using Wi-Fi, choose the least congested nearby band.
- Confirm PS5 NAT is Type 1 or Type 2, or Xbox NAT is Open or Moderate.
- Keep the router firmware current and ensure only one main router performs NAT.
- Save existing DNS values before trying manual IPv4 or IPv6 entries.
- Use only the published PlayStation, Xbox and GTA Online ports when troubleshooting.
- Do not use DMZ as a default fix.
- Pause large household uploads and downloads during the first online session.
- Check Rockstar service status before concluding that your console or ISP is at fault.
Rockstar’s GTA VI listing gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms, with PlayStation 5 labeled “Plays Best On.” Because GTA VI-specific network requirements have not been published in the official material covered here, these settings should be treated as preparation based on current GTA Online support guidance. Recheck Rockstar’s support and service-status information near launch; ports, service behavior and timing can change.
