There is no single best replacement for OneNote, Goodnotes, and Notability. The right choice depends on what you do most: write by hand and mark up PDFs, organize typed notes and links, build structured databases, or keep notes synced across devices. Goodnotes, Notability, Obsidian, Notion, and Apple Notes each suit different workflows, and moving an existing library is a separate test from liking an app’s features.
This comparison can help you choose an alternative, but it cannot establish which app a particular author personally chose or what they replaced. Treat the options below as workflow matches, not a claim of hands-on testing or a universal ranking.

Choose by the work your notes need to do
Start with the job you need the app to handle—not its position on a “best apps” list. A strong handwriting app may be a poor home for linked research, while a capable database may feel cumbersome for annotating a lecture PDF.
- Handwriting and PDF annotation: Compare Goodnotes and Notability first.
- Typed, linked notes stored as files: Consider Obsidian.
- Structured information, pages, and databases: Consider Notion.
- Notes across Apple devices: Consider Apple Notes, while checking the operating-system requirements for the import route you need.
- Keeping an existing OneNote library: Evaluate migration and sync before committing to a destination.
These are practical starting points, not guarantees that every feature or import will behave as you expect.

Which app fits each workflow?
Goodnotes: handwriting and annotated documents
Goodnotes is a candidate if your day-to-day notes are handwritten or revolve around marking up documents. Its current offering has multiple plans, with features and purchase options varying by plan, platform, and region. Check the feature you need against the plan available on your device rather than assuming every tier includes the same capabilities. Goodnotes lists Free, Special Edition, Essential, and Pro; its support page also explains plan limits and availability differences. Goodnotes pricing · Goodnotes plan comparison
Notability: handwriting, documents, and audio-oriented notes
Notability is worth comparing if you combine handwriting or document annotation with audio features. Its pricing page currently describes Starter, Plus, and Pro tiers, with distinctions that include audio recording and transcription, handwriting search, and AI functions. The exact features and prices can change, so verify the current plan details and checkout price in your region before deciding. Notability pricing

- 1 subject notebook comes with 70 wide ruled, double-sided sheets. Wide ruling is ideal for the younger student who needs more space between lines.
- Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
- Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder. Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover.
- Includes 6 notebooks in randomly selected colors: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple or Black. Colors will vary with each purchase.
- Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts
Obsidian: linked typed notes in local Markdown files
Obsidian suits readers who want typed, interconnected notes in local Markdown files. It is not a handwriting-first equivalent to Goodnotes or Notability. Its official importer documents a route from OneNote, either by signing in or importing OneNote export files, including .onepkg and .one. The imported result is Markdown, but the documentation does not promise that every layout or embedded item will convert perfectly. Obsidian’s OneNote importer

Notion: structured pages and databases
Notion is a plausible fit when you want notes organized as pages and databases rather than a notebook centered on handwriting. Its help documentation lists supported file formats and selected app imports, and says imports start on desktop or web. Supported formats do not guarantee that app-specific features, attachments, or organization will transfer intact, so check the destination structure and test representative content. Apple Notes: an Apple-centered library
Apple Notes may fit if you primarily use Apple devices. Apple documents a Markdown import path on macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and later. Those operating-system requirements apply to this documented route; Apple also notes that unsupported attachments or features may not be preserved in supported conversion workflows. Move OneNote notes without risking the original library
Migration quality can decide whether an otherwise suitable app is workable. Microsoft’s export guidance describes platform and version constraints, says its notebook import function is deprecated, and identifies the notebook-download process described there as Windows-only and unsupported on iOS. It also warns that notebooks with embedded documents, scans, PDFs, or media can become large. Check the current guidance against your OneNote version and device before planning an export. - Sync and preserve the source. Make sure the OneNote notebooks are synced, then keep a backup before attempting conversion.
- Choose a documented route for the target. For Obsidian, use its importer with a OneNote sign-in or compatible .onepkg/.one export. For Notion, start the import from desktop or web and use a supported format or app route. For Apple Notes, confirm that your device runs a supported OS for the documented Markdown import.
- Test representative material. Import a sample that includes the kinds of pages you depend on—such as tables, handwriting, links, images, attachments, and embedded documents—and inspect the result in the destination.
- Keep OneNote until the test passes. Confirm that important content and organization survived well enough for your needs before retiring the original notebook.
Microsoft recommends syncing and moving notebooks through OneNote rather than using a generic file-sync client. That matters because notebook sync is not the same as safely moving an arbitrary folder between cloud services. Microsoft’s OneNote sync guidance

Check sync and privacy as separate decisions
An app’s note-taking features do not tell you how its library is stored or synced. Obsidian’s local-file approach differs from an app where notes live in a managed cloud service. Before choosing, confirm where notes are stored, how each device gets updates, what sync setup is required, and whether the approach suits your privacy and backup needs. Do not assume that a cloud account, a local vault, or a generic file-sync tool is interchangeable with the app’s own supported workflow.
Validate the choice with a small trial
Before moving everything or paying for a plan, use a small but representative set of notes to answer the questions that matter to your workflow:
- Can you create and find the kind of notes you make most often?
- Do handwriting, PDF markup, links, tables, or attachments behave as required?
- Does the library sync acceptably across the devices you actually use?
- Can you export or back up notes in a form you can use later?
- Does the plan available in your region include the specific feature you need?
A short trial cannot prove every edge case, but it can expose a mismatch before a full migration.
