Neither method guarantees that Google will find or index a page faster. Use URL Inspection for a few specific URLs when you want to check their status or request a crawl. Use an XML sitemap to provide Google with a list of many pages. The right choice depends on how many URLs you need to address and what you need to know—not on a published speed advantage.
Which should you use?
| Your need | Better fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Check a page’s known status or test its live URL | URL Inspection | See Google’s current information for an individual URL and, when eligible, request a crawl. |
| Ask Google to revisit a small number of recently changed pages | URL Inspection | Submit an individual crawl request; repeated requests for the same URL do not make Google crawl it faster. |
| Tell Google about many pages or a newly launched or moved site | XML sitemap | Provide a list of URLs for discovery; submission is a hint, not a guarantee that Google will crawl or index them. |
| Check whether Google accessed a sitemap and report processing issues | Sitemap report in Search Console | Review sitemap access and processing errors; successful processing does not mean every listed URL will be crawled or indexed. |
Google does not publish a head-to-head timing result showing that either option is categorically faster. Its general guidance says a requested crawl can take a few days to a few weeks, and most sites should not expect same-day crawling. That is guidance, not a service-level commitment. See Google’s recrawl guidance and crawling troubleshooting guide.

When URL Inspection is the better choice
URL Inspection is for investigating an individual page. In Search Console, enter the URL in the inspection field to view Google’s current index information and, if appropriate, test the live URL or request indexing. The request asks Google to crawl the page; it does not compel a crawl or guarantee that the page will appear in search results.

Requests are limited, so this is not a practical way to submit an entire large site. Google also says asking repeatedly for the same URL will not speed up crawling. When an XML sitemap is the better choice
A sitemap gives Google a site-level list of URLs you want considered for Search. It is useful when you have many pages to make discoverable, including after a launch or migration. You can submit it through Search Console or use Google’s supported discovery methods. Google may also find pages through links.
For a sitemap file, Google’s documented limits are 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per file. These are file limits, not crawling-speed targets. If your list is larger, split it across multiple sitemap files and optionally group them in a sitemap index. Google’s documentation says sitemap files should use UTF-8 encoding, contain absolute, fully qualified URLs, and list pages you want considered for Google Search. The sitemap’s hosting location can affect which descendant URLs it covers unless you submit it through Search Console. See Google’s sitemap instructions.

After submission, Search Console’s sitemap report can show when Google accessed the file and whether it encountered processing errors. A sitemap that Google processed is not proof that every listed URL has been crawled or indexed.
Discovery, crawling and indexing are different
A sitemap or link can help Google discover a URL. Google then decides whether and when to crawl it. After crawling, Google separately decides whether to index the page; indexing still does not guarantee that it will appear for a particular query. These stages explain why a successful submission or crawl is not the same as search visibility. Google’s overview describes the process in its guide to how Google Search works. A sitemap does not guarantee indexing or improve ranking.

What to check if Google has not found or indexed a page
- Check the page URL in URL Inspection. Review the status Google reports, then use the live URL test if you need to investigate whether the page is currently accessible to Google.
- Make sure the page is eligible to be considered. Check that it is the URL you intend Google to show, can be crawled, and is not accidentally blocked. A sitemap should list the URLs you want considered, not every possible URL on the site.
- Choose the right submission method. Request a crawl for a few specific pages; use a sitemap for broader coverage. Confirm the sitemap is valid and check its Search Console report for access or processing errors.
- Allow time and monitor status. Google says crawling may take days to weeks. A request does not guarantee inclusion, and repeated requests are not a shortcut.
For site-wide crawling problems, Google’s troubleshooting guide can help distinguish crawl errors from indexing outcomes. The Indexing API is not a general-purpose alternative: Google documents it for job postings and livestream video pages, while recommending sitemaps for broader site coverage. See the Indexing API quickstart.
