Unturned is the strongest verified free choice for friends who want an open-ended survival sandbox. Steam lists it as free to play, with online and LAN co-op, scavenging, hunting, shelter building, base fortification, exploration and optional PvP in a zombie setting. Its Steam Workshop support adds community maps and mods. The free-game shortlist is short because the other strong cooperative comparison, Don’t Starve Together, is not established as free by the official pages checked.
Why Unturned is the clearest free recommendation
Steam describes Unturned as an “open-world zombie survival sandbox game” and marks the base game Free to Play. The listing also includes online co-op and LAN co-op, alongside online and LAN PvP. That combination directly matches the usual meaning of this search: a game friends can enter together, gather resources in, build a shared foothold and keep playing without a required purchase for the base experience.

Unturned’s core activities are broad enough to support different group personalities. You can scavenge supplies, hunt, explore, build shelter and fortify a base. The setting adds zombies and first-person action, while the multiplayer rules can allow either cooperation or competition. Steam Workshop support gives groups access to community maps and mods, extending the number of environments and rule sets they can try.
The important qualification is that “free” describes access to the base game, not an absence of optional spending. Steam lists in-game purchases and a permanent Gold upgrade. The developer-provided store description says there are “No pay-to-win mechanics, only cosmetic items to further customize your character.” That is the developer’s stated position, not an independent audit, so groups should still review the current store details before spending.

What to confirm before inviting your group
A free game can still fail as a group activity if one player cannot run it, everyone chooses a different server type or the session mixes incompatible versions. Use this short preflight check before planning a long evening.
1. Check each player’s platform
Steam lists Unturned for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. Every player should confirm that the game is available on the operating system they intend to use and that they can install the Steam client there. The official listing does not establish cross-play between different platform builds, so do not assume a Windows player and a macOS or Linux player can join the same session without checking the current game and server information.
2. Check the machine requirements
The Steam listing gives a minimum of 8 GB of RAM and 4 GB of available storage. Treat those figures as a pre-install checklist rather than a promise of identical performance on every system. Steam’s listing also notes that the Windows client requires Windows 10 or later beginning in 2024. Requirements and client support can change, so check the live listing for each player’s device before downloading.

Unturned lists both co-op and PvP. Decide in advance whether the group wants a cooperative server or a setting where players can fight one another. A player expecting a relaxed building session can have a poor first experience if another friend chooses a competitive environment. If the group wants low-conflict play, agree on a cooperative server or a suitable private setup before anyone joins.
4. Decide whether to use mods
Workshop maps and mods can add variety, but they also create another compatibility check. Start a first session with the unmodified game unless everyone is comfortable managing the same additions. When you do add a Workshop item, have every player use the same version and confirm that the chosen server supports it. If one player cannot connect after a change, remove the newest addition first and test the unmodified setup.
How a first Unturned session can work
The game does not require your group to follow one fixed campaign structure. A simple shared plan helps new players survive long enough to discover the sandbox’s freedom.

Start with a shared objective
Choose one near-term objective, such as finding supplies, locating a defensible place to shelter or gathering enough material to establish a base. A common objective prevents the group from scattering across the map before anyone understands the local threats.

One player can concentrate on scavenging, another on hunting, and another on selecting and improving a shelter site. These are practical divisions based on the activities Steam highlights; they are not mandatory classes. Rotate responsibilities once the group has a safe foothold so everyone gets to explore the game’s different systems.
Build before overextending
Early exploration is useful, but a shelter gives the group a place to regroup and store the results of scavenging. After establishing a basic shelter, spend time fortifying it before making longer trips. The group can then treat later expeditions as deliberate risks rather than losing all progress whenever a player is separated from the others.
Set a rule for PvP surprises
Because the listing includes competitive modes as well as co-op, establish whether player-versus-player encounters are welcome. If the answer is no, stay on a cooperative server or private arrangement that matches that expectation. If the group enjoys mixed play, decide whether friendly fire or base raiding is acceptable before building together.

Recommended Free Tools
What “free” means in Unturned
You can begin with the base game without buying access. However, the store page also lists in-game purchases and a permanent Gold upgrade. That makes it more accurate to call Unturned a free-to-play survival sandbox than a game with no monetization.
Rank #3

The developer’s store text says purchases are cosmetic and that there are no pay-to-win mechanics. Keep that wording attributed to the developer. It tells you how the developer positions the upgrade and items; it does not independently test every purchase or future change. If your group has a strict no-spending rule, agree that nobody needs the Gold upgrade to join the session and check the current listing for any changes.
Co-op or PvP: choosing the right environment
Choose co-op when the group wants a shared project
Co-op is the better fit when the evening’s goal is a common shelter, coordinated scavenging or exploration without friends attacking one another. Establish who will place or manage the base, where supplies should be stored and what happens if someone is separated from the group. These agreements are simple, but they prevent disputes that have nothing to do with the game’s mechanics.
Choose PvP when competition is part of the plan
PvP can turn the same scavenging and fortification systems into a contest. Decide whether the group wants occasional encounters or a deliberately adversarial session. Because Unturned lists both online and LAN PvP, players should confirm the chosen server’s rules rather than infer them from the game’s general label.
Use a private arrangement for a controlled first session
A private game or another controlled setup can make it easier for beginners to learn the survival loop. The official listing confirms co-op and LAN options, while the precise invite and server steps can vary with the current Steam and game interfaces. Have the host verify the present instructions in the game before the group starts, and make sure every participant is using the same platform build and any required Workshop content.
Workshop maps and mods: when they help and when they hurt
Workshop support is one of Unturned’s strongest sandbox features for groups that have already learned the base game. Community maps can change the setting, and mods can change the rules or available content. That gives a regular group more ways to replay the same survival idea.
Mods are most useful after the group has a stable baseline. Add one map or mod at a time, record what everyone installed and keep a known-good unmodified setup available. If a new server refuses a connection, produces different content for different players or behaves unexpectedly, return to the baseline before diagnosing the addition. Compatibility is a practical concern whenever several people must load the same community content.
Rank #4
Do not treat Workshop availability as a guarantee that every item is maintained, balanced or compatible with every server. Read the current item description and server requirements, and be prepared to remove a mod that blocks a friend from joining.

Where Don’t Starve Together fits
Don’t Starve Together is a meaningful cooperative comparison, not a verified free recommendation. Klei describes it as a standalone multiplayer expansion to Don’t Starve, with a loop of fighting, farming, building and exploring together. Klei’s support guidance says players can cooperate in a private game or find new friends online, and lists Steam for PC, Mac and Linux.
The official Klei pages consulted do not establish that the game is free. For that reason, it should not be presented as one of the best free games unless a current store listing confirms free access for the relevant platform and region. It may suit a group seeking wilderness survival and cooperative crafting, but its price must be checked separately.
| Game | What is established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Unturned | Free-to-play open-world zombie survival sandbox; online and LAN co-op; online and LAN PvP; Workshop support | In-game purchases and a permanent Gold upgrade are listed; the developer describes purchases as cosmetic |
| Don’t Starve Together | Standalone multiplayer expansion with private and online friend play; fighting, farming, building and exploration; Steam for PC, Mac and Linux | Free access is not established by the official Klei pages consulted |
The two games also differ in tone and survival style. Unturned emphasizes a zombie world, first-person action, scavenging and fortification. Don’t Starve Together is framed by Klei around wilderness survival, fighting, farming, building and exploration. Pick between them based on both price and the kind of pressure your group enjoys.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision framework for your group
Pick Unturned if all of these are true
- You need a base game currently listed as free to play.
- Your group wants online or LAN co-op rather than a solo-only survival experience.
- Zombies, first-person action, scavenging and base fortification sound appealing.
- You are comfortable checking whether a server is cooperative or allows PvP.
- Your players can meet the listed platform and minimum hardware requirements.
Look beyond Unturned if these are deal-breakers
- Your group does not want zombies or first-person combat.
- You require confirmed cross-play between different operating systems; the cited official pages do not establish it.
- You want a game with no optional purchases at all.
- You need a broad, independently verified free-game ranking across many platforms; the available official evidence does not support that conclusion.
Consider Don’t Starve Together when price is acceptable
Choose the Klei game when the group prefers a wilderness-focused cooperative loop of fighting, farming, building and exploration and is willing to verify its current purchase requirement. It is a useful alternative for play style, but not a free pick on the evidence available here.
Troubleshooting common group problems
A friend cannot install the game
Check the operating system against Steam’s listed Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux support, then confirm at least 8 GB of RAM and 4 GB of available storage. On Windows, verify that the machine meets the listing’s Windows 10-or-later client note. If the current store page has changed its requirements, use the newer information rather than relying on an older installation.
Best Value
A friend can install but cannot join
Confirm that everyone is using the same current game version, the same platform-compatible setup and the same server type. If the host added Workshop content, compare the installed maps and mods on every machine. Remove the newest addition and test a clean session to determine whether community content is the cause.
The session is more hostile than expected
Recheck whether the group joined a PvP environment. Unturned’s listing includes both competitive and cooperative modes, so the game title alone does not tell you how a particular server behaves. Move to an agreed cooperative or private setup when the group wants to build without player attacks.
The group cannot agree on spending
Separate access from optional purchases. The base game is listed as free to play, while in-game purchases and a permanent Gold upgrade are also listed. Agree that optional items are not required for participation, and review the current store description if anyone is considering an upgrade.
How to keep this recommendation current
Free-to-play status, platform support, system requirements and monetization can change. Before a new group session, open the current Steam listing, confirm the price label and supported operating systems, check the requirements for the least powerful machine in the group and review the server or Workshop requirements for any content you plan to use.
That small check matters especially for the word “best.” Unturned is the strongest verified fit here because its official listing confirms free access and co-op in the same open-ended survival sandbox. It is not evidence that every other survival game is paid, unsupported or inferior; it is the option whose free status and friend-play features are established together.
