There is no universally best set of computer gaming peripherals. The right choices depend on the games you play, your hand and typing preferences, desk space, room acoustics, platform support and budget. For most PC players, start with a comfortable mouse, suitable keyboard, headset and mousepad; add a controller or gaming monitor only when your games and setup justify them.
What every PC gaming setup actually needs
HP describes four core peripherals—a gaming keyboard, gaming mouse, gaming headset and mousepad. Logitech similarly says the best accessories depend on platform and play style. Treat those as a sensible starting point, not a rule that every player must follow.

| Peripheral | What to compare | Who benefits most |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse | Hand size, grip, shape, weight, handedness, connection and button layout | Almost every mouse-and-keyboard player; fit matters more than headline DPI |
| Keyboard | Layout, switch feel, noise, keycaps, remapping and optional analog or rapid-trigger functions | Players who type, play keyboard-focused genres or need precise control |
| Headset | Wired or wireless connection, open- or closed-back acoustics, microphone, comfort and platform support | Players who need game audio, voice chat or positional cues |
| Mousepad | Desk coverage, dimensions, cloth or hard surface and glide-versus-control feel | Anyone whose desk surface is inconsistent or too small for comfortable mouse movement |
| Controller | PC compatibility, wired or wireless operation, stick and trigger feel, remapping and game support | Players who prefer thumbsticks or play controller-oriented genres |
| Monitor | Resolution, refresh rate, response, panel type, stand adjustment, ports and price | Players whose current display limits motion clarity, resolution or ergonomics |
Choose the mouse by fit, not by the largest number
PC Gamer’s mouse guidance puts comfort first: the shape must suit your hand, grip and handedness. Measure your hand, identify whether you use a palm, claw or fingertip grip, and compare the mouse’s length, width, hump and weight. A lighter symmetrical mouse may suit fast competitive aim, while a larger ergonomic shell can better support a relaxed palm grip.

Specifications that matter
- Shape and size: the buttons should sit naturally under your fingers without forcing your wrist sideways.
- Weight: lower weight can make repeated swipes easier, but some users prefer the steadiness of a heavier design.
- Connection: wired models avoid charging; wireless models reduce cable drag but require battery management and a reliable receiver.
- Buttons: extra controls help in MMOs and productivity, while a simpler layout can prevent accidental presses in shooters.
- Sensor figures: maximum DPI, acceleration and polling-rate claims describe capability, not guaranteed accuracy or skill improvement.
PC Gamer reported the Orbital Pathfinder with maximum figures of 30,000 DPI, 750 IPS and 50G acceleration in 2026. Those are product limits, not evidence that every player will perform better at those settings.

How to set it up
Begin with a moderate sensitivity and a DPI value you can control comfortably, then adjust in the game. Keep sensitivity consistent while learning aim. Do not buy solely for an extreme polling rate or DPI figure.
Pick a keyboard around your hands, games and room
Keyboard choices involve compromises rather than a single winning specification. Full-size boards provide a number pad; tenkeyless and compact layouts free desk space. Linear, tactile and clicky switches change force, feedback and sound, while keycap profile and stabilizer quality affect long sessions.
When advanced features are worthwhile
- Remapping and macros: useful for productivity and games that support additional commands, but check each game’s rules before using automation.
- Analog magnetic switches: can provide adjustable actuation or controller-like input in supported games; they add cost and are unnecessary for ordinary typing.
- Rapid-trigger functions: may benefit movement-focused competitive play, but they do not replace practice and may be restricted in some competitions.
- Noise: clicky switches can disturb housemates or microphones; a quiet board is often the better upgrade for shared rooms.
PC Gamer’s 2025 hardware awards named the Be Quiet! Light Mount its gaming-keyboard winner, while Logitech G’s 2026 PRO X2 RAPID represents the magnetic-analog approach. These are examples of different priorities, not proof of a universal best keyboard. Confirm the exact revision, software support and availability before buying.

Choose a headset for your room and communication needs
Headsets trade isolation, openness, microphone quality, comfort and connection convenience. Closed-back models generally leak less sound and block more outside noise. Open-back models can sound spacious, but they leak game audio and work poorly beside a sleeping partner, microphone or noisy PC.
Connection and compatibility checklist
- Check whether your PC uses USB, a 3.5 mm combo jack or wireless USB; an adapter may be required.
- Verify microphone monitoring, mute controls and chat mixing in your operating system and game.
- For wireless models, check battery behavior, receiver range and whether simultaneous Bluetooth is supported.
- Confirm support for every platform you intend to use; console compatibility is not automatic.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 awards profile the wired Sony Inzone H6 Air, while PC Gamer’s 2025 awards list the Razer BlackShark V3. Their inclusion reflects those outlets’ editorial testing and categories, not a guarantee that either suits your room, head shape or devices.
Do not underestimate the mousepad
A pad supplies predictable tracking and protects the desk. Choose dimensions before material: low-sensitivity players often need a desk-size surface, while high-sensitivity users may prefer a compact pad that leaves room for the keyboard.

- Cloth: usually offers controllable glide, folds for transport and comes in large sizes.
- Hard surface: can feel fast and consistent, but is less forgiving of dust and may wear mouse feet faster.
- Control versus speed: neither is objectively superior; match the surface to your sensitivity and stopping style.
Logitech lists both large cloth and hard-surface designs. Check stitched edges, thickness, desk clearance and whether the base stays fixed during wide swipes.

When a controller is the better PC input
A controller is optional, not a replacement requirement. Games built around driving, platforming, fighting, sports or analogue movement can feel more natural with thumbsticks and triggers. GamesRadar notes that some PC players simply prefer thumbstick movement to WASD.
What to verify before purchase
- Windows support and the exact wired or wireless connection
- Layout, stick tension, trigger stops and vibration features
- Back-button mapping and whether remapping software runs on PC
- Compatibility with the game launcher and titles you actually play
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 awards profile the Asus ROG Raikiri II, and PC Gamer’s 2025 awards report a Razer Wolverine V3 Pro 8K with an 8,000 Hz polling specification and a roughly $200 price point at the time. High polling and premium controls increase cost; they are not universal performance requirements. Confirm the current SKU, firmware and price.

Should you upgrade the monitor?
A monitor is not a peripheral every buyer must replace, but it can be the most visible upgrade when your display is small, blurry, slow or difficult to position. Prioritize the combination your graphics card can actually drive: resolution, refresh rate and response are useful only when balanced with game settings and frame rate.
HP recommends 144 Hz or higher for competitive play; that is vendor guidance, not a threshold required by every gamer. PC Gamer’s 2025 coverage described the KTC H27T22C-3 as a 1440p display with a 210 Hz refresh rate and about 1 ms response time. Those specifications and its reported price were tied to that coverage and should be checked against the current revision and local availability.
Build your setup in the right order
- Fix the largest problem first: replace an uncomfortable mouse, unreliable keyboard, poor audio or inadequate desk space before chasing premium specifications.
- Measure your space: reserve room for the mouse, keyboard, monitor stand and cable routing; select pad dimensions afterward.
- Match the game genres: prioritize mouse and keyboard for shooters and strategy games, while considering a controller for analogue movement and console-style titles.
- Check every connection: confirm ports, operating-system support, wireless receivers, charging and software before ordering.
- Set comfort before performance tweaks: adjust chair, wrist position, monitor height, sensitivity and audio level before judging a new device.
- Buy one change at a time: this makes it easier to identify whether a shape, switch, surface or sound profile actually suits you.
How to evaluate marketing claims
Terms such as esports, pro, 8K polling, 30,000 DPI and rapid trigger describe features or positioning. They do not establish a category-wide improvement in skill. The reviewed buying guides provide no independent statistic quantifying how much gaming peripherals improve performance. Look for independent testing of the exact model, current firmware, return terms and compatibility with your games.

Logitech G says its 2026 PRO lineup was developed with “hundreds of esports athletes”; that is a vendor-reported collaboration figure, not an independent measurement. The lineup names the PRO X3 SUPERSTRIKE mouse, PRO X2 RAPID keyboard, PRO X3 LIGHTSPEED headset and PRO X CONTROL mousepad. Treat them as current product examples and verify revisions and stock.
