YouTube does not run one fixed algorithm. It continuously ranks videos for each viewer, combining viewing and search history, subscriptions, feedback, inferred interests, context, and evidence that people found a video useful and satisfying. The signals and their weight change by viewer and by surface, so your Home page, Up next queue, and Shorts feed can behave differently.
What YouTube’s recommendation system is trying to do
YouTube describes two goals: help each viewer find videos they want to watch and maximize long-term viewer satisfaction. Its Help documentation says the system learns from more than 80 billion pieces of information, which it calls signals. That figure is YouTube’s description of the system, not a count of separate rules that apply identically to everyone.
The system compares your viewing habits with those of similar viewers and uses that comparison to find likely interests. YouTube’s Transparency Centre says there is no set formula: the importance of any signal depends on the individual and changes as viewing habits change.
Which signals shape recommendations
Your activity and stated preferences
- Watch history and search history reveal topics, formats, channels, and viewing routines.
- Subscriptions indicate continuing interest in particular creators.
- Likes, dislikes, shares, comments, and removed liked videos provide explicit preference signals.
- Not interested and Don’t recommend channel are direct negative feedback.
- One-to-five-star satisfaction surveys and other in-product questions help YouTube estimate whether a viewing session was worthwhile.
Inferred interests and context
YouTube also infers interests from patterns rather than a single action. It can consider language, location, device, time of day, current viewing routine, and search and watch activity across YouTube and Google. These contextual signals are evaluated in real time, so the same video can be ranked differently for two people or for you at different moments.

What happens after a video is offered
Recommendations also respond to content performance among viewers who were shown a video. YouTube groups these signals into three practical questions:
| Signal group | What it measures | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Appeal | Whether people choose to start the video | Click-through rate and feedback given in the product |
| Engagement | Whether the video holds attention after the click | Viewing duration and average view duration |
| Satisfaction | Whether viewers felt the experience was valuable | Likes, dislikes, sharing, and survey-based predictions |
A high click-through rate is not enough if the title or thumbnail attracts a click but the video disappoints the viewer. Conversely, a video can be recommended to a smaller audience first and expand when its viewers respond positively. Signal weights are individualized rather than fixed thresholds that every video must pass.

Why watch time is not the whole algorithm
YouTube added watch time to its recommendation considerations in 2012 because a click does not prove that a viewer found a video valuable. YouTube’s official account reported that incorporating watch time initially produced a 20% drop in views. The change was intended to favor viewing that led to a better experience rather than clicks alone.
The company now describes “valued watch time”: viewing duration interpreted alongside one-to-five-star satisfaction surveys and machine-learning predictions based on survey responses. Likes, dislikes, and sharing add information, but YouTube says their importance varies by viewer. A longer session therefore is not automatically a better recommendation outcome if viewers signal low satisfaction.

How recommendations differ across YouTube
The same account can receive different recommendations because each surface uses a different mix of signals.
| YouTube surface | Signal YouTube emphasizes | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Primarily your watch history, combined with other personalized signals | The page is designed around your longer-term interests and routines. |
| Up next | The video currently playing is the main signal | The queue is usually more closely related to what you are watching now than to your entire history. |
| Shorts feed | Predictions about what you want to see next | Shorts behavior can develop its own pattern and need not mirror your long-form Home page. |
| Channel and destination pages | Some shelves are personalized | Personalization can appear on channel pages and on Shopping, Music, Movies, and TV destination pages. |
If watch history is turned off and there is little or no prior history, YouTube says Home keeps search and navigation elements but limits recommendations. That is a different experience from a fully personalized Home page, not evidence that the system has stopped working.

How to reset or retrain an unwanted feed
There is no single reset button that erases every inference. You can, however, change the inputs that are producing the recommendations.
- Remove a triggering video from watch history. Delete a recently watched item when one accidental view is pulling your Home page toward an unwanted topic. Removing it can change future recommendations.
- Clean up search history. Delete searches that no longer represent your interests, especially repeated searches for a one-time question.
- Clear or pause history when appropriate. Clearing removes existing activity; pausing prevents new activity from being used in that history. With little prior activity, a paused watch history makes Home recommendations much more limited.
- Give direct feedback on individual cards. Use Not interested for a recommendation you do not want, or Don’t recommend channel when the source itself is not relevant.
- Choose topics when YouTube offers them. Topic selections provide an explicit description of what you want to see instead of relying only on inferred behavior.
- Review likes and playlists. Remove videos you no longer endorse from liked videos and edit or delete playlists whose contents are distorting your interests.
- Use Incognito for temporary or private viewing. Incognito activity is not used to influence your recommendations in the usual account history.
Make changes that match the problem. Delete a single accidental video for a narrow correction; clear or pause history for a broader reset; and use direct feedback when the issue is a recurring channel or recommendation type.

Why misinformation and low-quality videos can still appear
YouTube says it uses classifiers, human evaluators, and authoritative-content signals to distinguish reliable material from borderline content. Certified experts are used for some health-information evaluation. Borderline material is not necessarily removed; it can be shown less often in recommendations.
YouTube reported a 70% reduction in watch time on recommended borderline content watched by non-subscribers in the United States after demotion changes in 2019. The company says those changes had reached every market by March 2021. It also stated a policy goal of keeping recommendation-driven borderline views below 0.5% of overall YouTube views. These are YouTube-reported results and an internal goal, not an independent audit, and the company says the system continues to evolve.
What the algorithm means for creators
YouTube’s current guidance is to focus on whether the intended audience likes the content and to sustain recognizable quality, rather than trying to satisfy a secret upload-time formula. YouTube says it has not observed evidence that publishing time changes long-term viewership, although timing can matter for a scheduled Premiere or live stream.
When viewers find a video valuable, a coherent series, well-maintained playlists, end screens, and a clear next-video prompt can help them continue watching. Those tools support an existing audience interest; they cannot substitute for appeal, sustained viewing, and satisfaction.
A practical way to diagnose your feed
- Home is dominated by one accidental topic: remove the related watch and search activity, then use Not interested on remaining cards.
- Up next looks unrelated to your usual interests: judge it against the video currently playing first; Up next gives that video unusual weight.
- Shorts feel unlike your long-form recommendations: treat the Shorts feed as a separate personalized stream with its own recent behavior pattern.
- Home has very few recommendations: check whether watch history is paused or empty; YouTube intentionally limits Home personalization in that situation.
- A channel keeps returning: choose Don’t recommend channel rather than repeatedly skipping individual videos.
The bottom line
YouTube recommendations are a changing, personalized ranking system—not a single watch-time leaderboard. Your history and explicit feedback establish the starting point; context and similar-viewer patterns refine it; clicks, viewing duration, and satisfaction determine how offered videos perform; and each YouTube surface applies those signals differently. The most effective way to change the feed is to edit the specific history and feedback signals that no longer describe what you want to watch.
