What Apple meant by the “hobby”
The “hobby” label refers to Apple’s streaming hardware, not its video subscription. MacRumors reports that the original Apple TV launched in 2007 at $299, and that the product evolved from a Mac-oriented media device into a standalone streaming platform with apps and Apple service integrations. That is historical context, not a like-for-like price comparison with today’s hardware. MacRumors’ account of Apple TV’s history does not establish an exact, attributable Steve Jobs quotation, so the label is best treated as a reported characterization rather than a verified quote.

What Apple TV costs in the United States
Apple’s U.S. store currently lists two Apple TV 4K configurations. Its U.S. subscription page lists a separate monthly charge for Apple TV. Prices and offers can change; these are the amounts shown on Apple’s pages when accessed in 2026.

Do you need the Apple TV 4K box?
No. Apple says the subscription is available through the Apple TV app on supported streaming devices and smart TVs, AirPlay-enabled TVs, and the web. Check that your particular device is supported before subscribing, but do not buy Apple hardware just to access the service if you already have a compatible option. Apple’s subscription page answers both “How much does Apple TV cost?” and “Do I need an Apple TV 4K?”
This distinction changes the real spending decision. If your television or another streaming device runs the Apple TV app, the subscription is a recurring $14.99 monthly expense after the trial, with no Apple TV 4K purchase required. If you want Apple’s hardware as well, the initial outlay starts at $199, before any cables you actually need, and the subscription remains a separate charge unless you access it through an eligible bundle or offer.

Which Apple TV 4K configuration makes sense?
- Choose the $199 64GB Wi-Fi model if you want the box for streaming and do not need a wired network connection. The higher-priced model is not required to stream Apple TV content.
- Consider the $249 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model if you specifically want Ethernet or value its additional storage and Thread support. Apple’s listed specifications do not make it a requirement for watching the subscription.
- Skip the box if a device you already own supports the Apple TV app and meets your needs. That avoids the hardware purchase entirely.
The two configurations differ by $50 in Apple’s U.S. listing. Choose based on storage and connectivity needs, not on the assumption that the more expensive version unlocks the subscription.

Apple’s U.S. subscription page lists several access routes besides paying $14.99 monthly on its own: Apple TV is included with Apple One, and access is available through the Apple Music Student Plan. Apple also lists three months free with an eligible Apple-device purchase. These options have their own eligibility and bundle terms, and offers may vary, so check Apple’s current page before counting on them. Apple’s subscription page distinguishes its service from third-party subscriptions, rentals, and purchases that may also appear in the Apple TV app.

Why the “hobby” can feel expensive now
The original $299 launch price and today’s $199 starting price are nominal historical and current prices, not an inflation-adjusted comparison. The more important change for a household is the product’s role: the device became a broader streaming platform with app and service integrations, while Apple TV also became the name of a recurring video subscription. Paying for both can therefore mean a substantial one-time hardware purchase plus an ongoing monthly bill. But Apple’s own support for the app across other devices means the ecosystem is not an all-or-nothing hardware purchase.
There is no basis in the cited sources for claims about current Apple TV unit sales, profitability, market share, or typical household spending. The concrete affordability question is personal: whether you need a new box, whether your existing device supports the app, whether an eligible bundle or offer applies, and whether the subscription’s recurring price fits your budget.
