It cannot prove that a claim is true, show why a search engine ranked a page, or represent every visitor’s result. 1. Define the local entity and audit scope
Start with one clearly defined business entity. For a single-location company, record the canonical website and the official profiles customers are likely to use. For a multi-location company, create a separate scope for each location and a roll-up view for shared claims.
- Website: homepage, contact page, location pages, service pages, about/team pages, author pages, policies, disclosures and representative articles.
- Public profiles: the business profile on major map and review services, relevant directories, social profiles and industry listings.
- Search context: the city or service area, device type, viewport, language, logged-in state and any search location that can change what appears.
- Time boundary: an audit start and end time in UTC. Hours, reviews, staff and listing content can change after capture.
Do not silently combine branches. A phone number or opening hour that is correct for one location can be misleading when attached to another.
2. Create an evidence register before capturing anything
The register is the index for your screenshots and the place where a finding becomes an assigned correction. Use one row per auditable claim or page.

Use filenames that sort naturally, such as 2026-10-13T14-30Z_downtown-hours_profile.png. Store the original image without overwriting it when a later capture is made.
3. Capture comparable page and listing states
Use a repeatable capture sequence
- Open the canonical URL or official profile from the register, not a copied search snippet.
- Record the URL after redirects and note whether the page is publicly accessible.
- Set the documented viewport, device emulation, locale and search location. Keep these settings consistent for the comparison set.
- Wait until the visible content that matters—hours, staff information, service details or reviews—has loaded. Record any consent dialog, sign-in wall, bot challenge or error state instead of hiding it from the record.
- Capture the full page when the claim spans sections. Capture a focused element as well when a long page makes the relevant text difficult to verify.
- Save the timestamp, context and evidence reference in the register immediately.
- Repeat the same sequence for the corresponding website page and every relevant listing.
Automated captures should not imply that a screenshot represents every user. A listing can vary by geography, device, language, personalization and time. Preserve those variables alongside the image.
A minimal Playwright workflow for repeatable captures
The following Node.js example uses a local Playwright installation. It captures a list of URLs at a fixed viewport, waits for network activity to settle, and writes UTC-stamped PNG files. Review the resulting pages for consent dialogs, challenges and missing content before treating them as evidence.

4. Compare the evidence that customers actually see

Compare the visible words, not only hidden metadata. A structured-data field that says one thing while the page displays another is a consistency defect that needs investigation.
5. Evaluate experience, expertise, authority and trust without inventing proof
Experience
Look for first-hand knowledge: work examples, service or location context, dates, process details and a named person or business activity that can be checked. Do not manufacture case studies, credentials or customer stories to fill a missing screenshot.
Expertise
Record named authors or practitioners, relevant qualifications, responsibility for the content and a route for a visitor to verify the claim. An author box with no identity or supporting page is weaker evidence than a clearly attributable contribution.
Authority and reputation
Check independent mentions, relevant reviews, accurate profiles and consistent identity. If an audit product supplies a score, label it as that vendor’s score; it is not a Google measurement. A BrightLocal local-audit report, for example, documents sections for local listings, reviews and ratings, Google Business Profile, on-site SEO, mobile, content, social channels and website authority. Those are the sections of that vendor’s report, not a universal validated standard.
Trust
Verify accurate contact details, ownership, policies and disclosures, secure access, hours and service information. Check that the website and listings lead to the same legitimate business and that important pages are not broken or inaccessible.
6. Protect review and listing integrity
Google’s Business Profile rules require contributions to reflect genuine experiences or a business’s permanent identity. They prohibit promotional or solicitation material in reviews and restrict specified promotional content in listings. Your register should distinguish customer-authored review evidence from business-authored descriptions and responses.
- Record what a profile and its reviews say at the time of capture; do not ask customers to write language designed to create an E‑E‑A‑T signal.
- Do not alter, incentivize, suppress or fabricate reviews to repair an audit finding.
- When a review contains a factual error, document the issue and use the platform’s legitimate correction or reporting process.
- Capture the business response separately when it adds verifiable service information; do not treat a promotional response as customer evidence.
7. Check technical trust and structured data
Site access and security
Confirm HTTPS, reachable contact and policy pages, working internal links and content that loads without an avoidable error. Record redirects, blocked resources, blank states and bot checks as observations, not as reasons to edit the evidence out of the audit.

LocalBusiness markup can communicate details such as hours and departments. Validate the markup, check how Google can see the page and allow time for recrawling and reindexing after a correction. Compare every important property with the visible page. Structured data is a machine-readable description; it does not prove a claim is true or establish an E‑E‑A‑T score.

8. Turn discrepancies into prioritized work
Give every discrepancy one owner, one source screenshot and one follow-up date. A simple severity model keeps obvious customer risks ahead of cosmetic differences.

- Coverage: include full pages, mobile views and location-specific profiles when they affect customer decisions.
- State awareness: log consent dialogs, popups, chat widgets, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads instead of silently treating them as normal content.
- Storage: retain the original image, URL, UTC timestamp, context and register row together; use access controls for private or authenticated pages.
- Change detection: recapture on a schedule appropriate to how often hours, staff, services and profiles change, and recapture immediately after a material correction.
- Limits: do not infer a universal customer view from one device, geography or time.

Capture both documented viewports and compare the visible hours, phone, address and calls to action. Responsive layouts can hide or reorder content; treat a missing mobile detail as a real customer-access issue when it blocks verification.
Structured data does not match the page
Inspect the markup and visible text separately, validate the markup, correct the source, and allow time for recrawling and reindexing. Do not use markup alone as proof of a credential, address or review claim.
