A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11On a new Android phone, start with a secure screen lock, then check the security overview, lost-device recovery, app permissions and backup. These built-in settings can reduce the risk of someone accessing your phone, help you respond if it goes missing and make it less likely that important data is overlooked. Menu names and availability vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use Settings search if a path below does not match your phone.
1. Set a secure screen lock
Choose a PIN, pattern or password, and add fingerprint or face unlock if your phone supports it and you want the convenience. Biometrics are a way to unlock; a screen lock remains the underlying protection. Google’s backup guidance recommends a PIN, pattern or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock for backup protection. Search Settings for screen lock if you cannot find the control. Also consider whether you want notification contents visible while the phone is locked. The exact notification controls and labels vary; search Settings for lock screen notifications or sensitive notifications.

3. Verify lost-phone recovery
Find Hub can help locate, secure or erase a lost Android device. Check that it is enabled and that your phone appears in Find Hub while you still have the phone. Search Settings for Find Hub or Find My Device if the menu is elsewhere. Google’s Find Hub guidance

Remote securing or erasing is conditional, not guaranteed. Google lists these requirements: the phone has power, is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, is signed in to a Google Account, has Find Hub turned on and is visible on Google Play. A screen lock is also relevant to participation in the Find Hub network. A powered-off phone is not necessarily locatable; results depend on the device and circumstances.
4. Review which apps have used sensitive permissions
Open Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard, or search Settings for Privacy Dashboard. It shows which apps accessed permissions and when. Google’s current support page says the dashboard shows seven days of history on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Google’s Privacy Dashboard guidance

Look especially at camera, microphone and location access. If an app’s access seems unnecessary for what it does, open that app’s permission entry and choose a more limited option or deny access. Permission names and choices depend on Android version and app.
5. Turn on backup and check what it covers
Search Settings for Backup and open the backup details for your Google Account. Turn backup on if you want it, review the listed categories and use Back up now when appropriate. Google says Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. The process can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. Google’s Android backup guidance

Backup is not a complete copy of every phone. Some data requires a particular Google app, and not every app backs up or restores all of its settings and data. Photos and videos may be handled separately through Google Photos. Restoring between different Android versions can also limit what is compatible. Check critical app-specific data directly in the app, rather than assuming the system backup includes it.

6. Check important items after phone-to-phone transfer
A setup transfer can move a lot of data, but Google says some items may not transfer: downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, some app data, non-Google accounts and their associated data, and some settings. Google’s Android transfer guidance

After setup, open essential files and apps on the new phone. Verify documents and other downloads, sign in to accounts that did not move, and check that important app-specific information is present. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until you have confirmed what you need is accessible on the new one.
7. Keep Play Protect available
Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. Google says it can warn about, deactivate or remove harmful apps, including potentially harmful apps from outside Google Play. Review its status and any warnings in the Play Store rather than disabling the protection without a specific reason. Google Play Protect help
8. Consider Advanced Protection only if you need it
Advanced Protection adds security measures for people who want stronger safeguards and whose phone supports the relevant features. Depending on device and version, the bundle can include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Inactivity Reboot and USB Protection. Setup and a screen lock are required; some features depend on device support and may require a reboot. Protections can also change browser or USB behavior. Google’s Advanced Protection guidance
Treat it as an optional security choice, not a required new-phone step. Check the available features and trade-offs on your particular device before enrolling.
