Scammers impersonate employers through job platforms, email, text, and social media, and a logo, formal offer letter, or virtual interview can all look convincing. The reliable check is to verify the vacancy and recruiter through contact information you find independently, and never pay to get a job.
Why a convincing offer can still be a scam
A known company name, professional-looking messages, and a familiar job platform can make an approach feel legitimate. None confirms that the sender works for the company or that the opening exists. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers impersonate real employers and use fake recruiter messages to draw job seekers into schemes involving money or personal information. FTC guidance on job-scam texts and its job-scam advice explain the patterns.

The title of this article describes a personal experience, but the specific chronology and evidence behind that account are not established here. There is also no evidence that AI generated any particular scam message or that AI use creates a reliable tell. A message may be polished, automated, or written by a person; the important question is whether the employer can independently confirm the opening and recruiter.
Check the offer without relying on the sender
- Pause before replying or clicking. Treat an unexpected recruiter text or link as unverified. Do not use contact details or websites supplied by the person whose identity you are checking.
- Look for independent reports. Search the company and recruiter names with words such as “scam,” “complaint,” or “review.” Search results can provide context, but they do not prove an offer is genuine or fraudulent.
- Find the employer’s official channel yourself. Navigate to the employer’s website and careers page independently, or use a contact method you already know is legitimate. Check whether the role is listed and ask whether the named recruiter is connected to the hiring process.
- Compare the process with the role. Consider whether the pay, urgency, interview format, and payment requests make sense. Personal email or a chat-only interview may warrant questions, but no single clue settles the matter. The FTC says there is no sure-fire way to spot every job scam; indicators should raise suspicions, not substitute for verification. FTC employment-scam guidance.
- Do not send money or sensitive details while the offer is unverified. Stop if you are asked for an upfront fee, to buy equipment through a payment app, to deposit a check and forward money, or to provide sensitive financial or identity information before the employer and hiring process are verified.
Requests that should make you stop
Paying for the job or equipment
Never pay to get a job or to receive equipment that an employer promises to provide. A fake-check scheme may ask you to deposit a check and send part of the money elsewhere. The bank may initially make funds available, but if the check is later found fraudulent and reversed, you can be left responsible for the amount you forwarded. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Never pay to get paid or get a job.” FTC alert on fake recruiter texts.

Sharing identity or banking information too early
Be cautious if someone asks for your Social Security number, identity documents, or bank details before you have confirmed the employer, vacancy, and hiring process. Scammers can use such information for identity theft. Verify first through an independently sourced employer contact—not a phone number, email address, or link in the suspicious message. The FTC discusses these risks in its job-scam guidance and advice for job seekers.
Tasks that require your own money
Some task scams begin as vague online work and later tell workers to put in their own money to continue or access supposed earnings. Be wary of any job that requires deposits to complete tasks or unlock pay. The FTC reported about $41 million in job-scam cryptocurrency losses in the first half of 2024, compared with about $21 million in all of 2023. Those figures refer specifically to reported cryptocurrency losses in those periods—not total job-scam losses or a forecast for another year. FTC data spotlight on task scams.

What to do if you receive a suspicious approach
- Do not pay, deposit a check for the recruiter, or share sensitive identity or financial details while the offer is unverified.
- Confirm the role and recruiter using the employer’s independently located careers page or a known legitimate contact channel.
- If the approach came by text, forward it to 7726 (SPAM) or use your phone’s junk-reporting feature, as the FTC advises.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
The reporting instructions above apply to the United States. FTC guidance helps identify common warning signs, but no checklist can certify an offer; direct confirmation from the employer is the key check.
