Which lamp turned 90?
It is the Anglepoise Original 1227, a desk lamp whose recognizable form is associated with a three-spring arm. Anglepoise calls the 1227 its archetypal lamp; the Design Museum characterizes the Anglepoise as an iconic British design. The 90-year count refers to the Model 1227’s 1935 launch, which Anglepoise marked in 2025—not to the earlier invention of its spring mechanism. 1932: Carwardine develops the spring mechanism
Anglepoise credits automotive engineer George Carwardine with developing the spring mechanism in 1932. The mechanism is the starting point of the lamp’s history, but it is not the same milestone as the launch of the 1227.

1933: the four-spring Model 1208
The company timeline dates the four-spring Model 1208 to 1933 and says Carwardine licensed his design to spring maker Herbert Terry & Sons. This was an early production model, preceding the better-known 1227.

1935: the three-spring Model 1227
The Model 1227 followed in 1935. Anglepoise describes it as the archetypal Anglepoise and identifies the current Original 1227 as the company’s main lamp. A lamp sold today as a current Original 1227 should not be confused with an individual vintage Model 1227 from 1935.
Has the Anglepoise been improved?
That depends on what “improved” means. The available sources establish a later design, but they do not compare the Original 1227 and later lamps in controlled tests of performance, durability, ergonomics, or light quality. So the headline’s claim that nobody improved on the lamp is not a demonstrated technical verdict.

The Type 80 is a later design, not a 2026 launch
Anglepoise describes the Type 80 as an all-new design by British industrial designer Kenneth Grange, introduced in 2019. It is a distinct modern interpretation within the company’s history. Its existence shows that Anglepoise developed other designs; by itself, it does not prove that the Original 1227 was improved, surpassed, or only now replaced. The maker’s history page and product timeline provide the dates and attribution.
A fair head-to-head comparison would need consistent information about each lamp’s adjustment mechanism and reach, light source and controls, stability or mounting, materials, repair support, and price. The cited history pages do not establish enough matching specifications to rank the two models on those grounds.

What the lamp’s longevity does—and does not—show
Anglepoise’s timeline attributes this reflection to Simon Terry, identified there as “Custodian of Anglepoise”: “The secret to this kind of longevity? Well, actually caring is a start.” It is a useful expression of the maker’s attitude, not independent proof that every version is unchanged or that the lamp is objectively superior to alternatives.

If you own a vintage lamp, identifying its model matters before buying parts. Anglepoise’s support material describes ways to date lamps and points owners toward selected replacement parts. The maker lists categories such as shades, switches, lamp holders, and rewire kits, but those parts are not established as universally compatible. Check the specific lamp’s model and verify fit and current availability before ordering.
