The most effective Makita demolition setup uses five different tools, each assigned to a specific material and cut: the GMH02Z SDS-MAX demolition hammer for heavy concrete breaking, the GRH07M1 SDS-PLUS rotary hammer for drilling and lighter chipping, a reciprocating saw for rough strip-out, an angle grinder for metal fasteners and masonry edges, and an oscillating multi-tool for controlled flush cuts. No single tool is fastest at every demolition task.

Choose by the material you are removing, the amount of control required, and how long you must hold the tool. The GMH02Z removes the most concrete per blow but weighs 27.98 lb. The GRH07M1 is much lighter and more maneuverable, but its 2.7 ft-lb impact rating is intended for drilling and lighter chipping rather than major slab removal.

1. GMH02Z: the heavy concrete breaker

What it does best

The GMH02Z is an 80V max (40V max X2) XGT brushless SDS-MAX AVT demolition hammer. Its job is to convert battery power into repeated high-energy impacts for breaking concrete, block, masonry and other hard mineral materials. Makita publishes 20.2 ft-lb (27.5 J) of impact energy and a variable impact rate of 950–1,900 blows per minute. That combination makes it the appropriate choice when the priority is removing a large amount of hard material rather than making a precise opening.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

SDS-MAX is the bit interface, so the hammer accepts SDS-MAX bull points, chisels and related accessories. A 12-inch SDS-MAX bull point is included with the kit version. SDS-MAX accessories are not interchangeable with the smaller SDS-PLUS system used by the GRH07M1.

Weight, handling and vibration

The published net weight is 27.98 lb, and the tool uses two 40V max XGT batteries. That mass helps the bit stay engaged while breaking, but it also makes overhead work and long periods of horizontal chiseling tiring. Plan the sequence so the hammer handles the deepest, hardest sections while lighter tools perform edge work and cleanup.

The GMH02Z includes Makita’s AVT vibration-control system. Makita describes AVT as “a counterbalance system along with vibration-absorbing handles that work to reduce vibration.” Vibration control can improve comfort and control, but it does not make extended use risk-free; rotate operators, keep both hands on the tool, and follow the manual’s limits.

Tool-only and kit contents

The tool-only version includes a side handle, grease and a wiping cloth. The kit adds two 40V max 4.0Ah batteries, a charger, a 12-inch SDS-MAX bull point, grease, cloth, side handle and carrying case. The two-battery requirement is important: this is not a single-pack 40V tool, and a buyer should budget for the correct XGT charging and battery system if choosing the tool-only version.

When not to choose it

Do not use the GMH02Z as a substitute for a drill when you need clean anchor holes, or as a precision cutter near plumbing and finished surfaces. Its impact energy is excessive for many small chipping jobs, and its weight reduces maneuverability. Start with the GRH07M1 for drilling and light chipping; move to the GMH02Z when the material itself is the bottleneck.

2. GRH07M1: drilling and lighter chipping

Capabilities and interface

The GRH07M1 is a 40V max XGT D-handle rotary hammer using SDS-PLUS bits. It drills concrete up to 1-1/8 inches and delivers 2.7 ft-lb (3.7 J) of impact energy. Its published speed range is 0–980 RPM, with a hammer rate of 0–5,000 BPM.

SDS-PLUS bits are smaller than SDS-MAX accessories and are suited to drilling holes for anchors, conduit and fasteners, plus removing tile, mortar and limited amounts of concrete. The rotary action makes it more versatile than a dedicated breaker, while the lower impact rating gives you more control around embedded services and edges.

What comes in the researched kit

The GRH07M1 kit includes one 4.0Ah battery, a charger and a DX15 dust-extractor attachment. The attachment is useful when drilling indoors or in occupied areas because it captures dust at the bit rather than leaving the operator to manage a cloud after the hole is made. Confirm that the attachment and any replacement filters are available for the regional kit you are buying.

Weight and maneuverability

Makita states a 10 lb net weight with battery for the researched kit. That is substantially easier to position than the 27.98-lb GMH02Z, especially when drilling a series of holes or chipping from a ladder or scaffold position. The trade-off is productivity in very hard, thick concrete: the GRH07M1 has roughly one-sixth of the GMH02Z’s published impact energy, so it should not be expected to break a slab at the same rate.

3. Reciprocating saw: the rough strip-out specialist

Where it saves time

A reciprocating saw is the practical demolition tool for separating timber framing, drywall, nails, plastic pipe and many metal pipes. A long blade can reach through a stud bay, cut several layers in one pass and sever fasteners that would otherwise force you to dismantle a section piece by piece. It is usually the fastest option when the material is mixed and the goal is removal rather than a finished edge.

Use a short, fine-tooth blade for sheet metal or thin pipe, a demolition blade for timber with embedded nails, and a longer blade when reach matters. Match the blade shank and length to the selected saw; the catalog category does not establish one common blade specification for every regional model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations and technique

The reciprocating blade wanders if you force it, so let the teeth do the cutting and support the shoe firmly against the work. It can damage hidden wiring, plumbing and adjacent finishes because the blade extends beyond the visible cut. Make an inspection opening first when the contents of a wall or ceiling are unknown, and stop if the blade begins binding or heating.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Makita’s 2026/27 general catalog lists cordless reciprocating saws, but it does not identify a single demolition model, stroke length or battery platform for all markets. Select the local model only after confirming its stroke, variable-speed control, shoe adjustment, blade-change system and compatibility with your existing batteries.

4. Angle grinder: fast metal and edge work

Typical demolition uses

An angle grinder complements the reciprocating saw when steel fasteners are the obstacle. It can cut bolts, brackets, rebar, metal trim and stubborn welds, and it can clean or shape a masonry edge after bulk material has been removed. A grinder is also useful for cutting a section that a reciprocating blade cannot start cleanly.

Choose a cutting disc for through-cuts and a grinding or masonry wheel for shaping; never assume one disc is suitable for every material. The disc diameter, spindle specification, guard design and maximum RPM are model-dependent. The disc’s own rating must meet or exceed the grinder’s rated speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control and safety considerations

Keep the guard installed and position it between the wheel and your body. Sparks can ignite dust, insulation or vapors, so clear the area and maintain a fire watch when cutting inside a structure. Hold the grinder with both hands, keep the wheel square to the cut, and avoid twisting a thin cutting disc. Kickback is more likely when the disc pinches, so support the work and make relief cuts when necessary.

Because the grinder throws sparks and abrasive particles, it is a poor choice near glass, finished cabinetry, exposed wiring or combustible materials. Use the reciprocating saw for those locations when a cold cut is more appropriate.

5. Oscillating multi-tool: precise, close-quarters cuts

Why it belongs in a demolition kit

An oscillating multi-tool is the controlled option for flush-cutting protruding nails, shims and trim; opening a small section of drywall; undercutting door jambs; and removing grout. Its blade moves through a short arc, allowing work close to a floor, cabinet, pipe or finished face where a reciprocating saw would be too aggressive.

What it cannot replace

The multi-tool is deliberately slow at bulk removal. It is not the right choice for cutting an entire stud line, severing heavy pipe or breaking concrete. Use it to create access, finish a difficult corner or preserve a surface that must remain intact, then switch to the faster tool once the controlled portion is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Makita lists oscillating multi-tools as a current category, but model and blade-interface details vary by region. Verify the local accessory standard before buying blades, grout removers or flush-cut attachments, especially if you already own accessories from another system.

How the five tools work together on one demolition job

  1. Survey the area. Identify concrete, masonry, wood, drywall, metal and finish surfaces. Locate electrical, plumbing and structural elements before cutting or drilling.
  2. Make controlled access openings. Use the oscillating multi-tool for a small inspection cut where preserving surrounding surfaces matters.
  3. Drill or lightly chip first when necessary. Use the GRH07M1 with an SDS-PLUS bit to drill starter holes, remove tile or weaken a limited section.
  4. Break the main mineral mass. Switch to the GMH02Z with an SDS-MAX point or chisel for thick concrete and masonry. Use its side handle and keep the bit aligned with the intended fracture.
  5. Separate framing and services. Use the reciprocating saw with a blade matched to wood, nail-embedded timber, drywall or pipe.
  6. Remove metal restraints. Use the angle grinder for bolts, brackets, rebar and metal trim that resist the saw. Reposition combustible material before producing sparks.
  7. Trim and clean edges. Return to the multi-tool for flush cuts and grout, or use the grinder with an appropriate wheel to dress a masonry edge.
  8. Control dust and debris. Use the GRH07M1’s DX15 attachment where compatible, isolate the work area and clean debris before changing tools or inspecting hidden damage.

Comparison: speed, control, power and fatigue

Tool Removal speed Control near finishes Primary fatigue factor Accessory system
GMH02Z Highest for hard mineral material Low to moderate 27.98-lb tool and two-battery setup SDS-MAX
GRH07M1 Moderate for drilling and light chipping Moderate to high Holding and repositioning during repeated holes SDS-PLUS
Reciprocating saw High for linear cuts in mixed materials Moderate Blade vibration and awkward reach Model-specific saw blades
Angle grinder High for exposed metal Low near delicate finishes Grip, sparks and kickback management Model-specific discs
Oscillating multi-tool Low for bulk removal Highest Slow progress and hand vibration Model-specific oscillating accessories

These are application-based comparisons, not independent productivity tests. Makita’s published specifications establish the GMH02Z and GRH07M1 ratings, while the relative roles of the three cutting tools follow their standard demolition applications. Actual progress depends on material thickness, blade or bit choice, operator technique and access.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Match the battery platform. The GMH02Z requires two 40V max XGT batteries; the researched GRH07M1 kit uses one 40V max battery. Do not assume a single-pack tool can substitute for the dual-battery hammer.
  • Buy the correct interface. SDS-MAX and SDS-PLUS bits are different systems. Saw blades, grinder discs and multi-tool accessories must match the selected regional model.
  • Plan dust control. The GRH07M1 kit includes a DX15 dust-extractor attachment; verify compatibility and filtration for your work environment.
  • Check the kit contents. The GMH02Z kit includes batteries, charger, bull point and case, while the tool-only version does not include those power-system items.
  • Use task-specific PPE. Wear eye and hearing protection, suitable respiratory protection for the material and gloves that preserve control. Add face protection for grinding and use work-area isolation when producing concrete dust.
  • Inspect before each cut. Check guards, side handles, cords or batteries, blade and disc condition, and the presence of hidden services.

Which one should you buy first?

Choose the GMH02Z if your demolition consists mainly of thick concrete or masonry and maximum breaking output justifies a 27.98-lb, two-battery tool. Choose the GRH07M1 if you need concrete drilling, anchor holes, tile removal and lighter chipping in a more maneuverable package. Choose a reciprocating saw for general interior strip-out, an angle grinder when steel fasteners and rebar dominate, and an oscillating multi-tool when protecting adjacent surfaces matters more than raw speed.

For a complete demolition workflow, the five tools are complementary rather than competing: the rotary hammer creates and controls access, the demolition hammer breaks the hard mass, the reciprocating saw separates construction materials, the grinder defeats metal restraints, and the multi-tool handles the precise finishing cuts.
