In Q3 2022, a Mirai botnet variant hit Wynncraft with a DDoS attack that peaked at 2.5 terabits per second (Tbps), according to Cloudflare. The company called it the largest attack it had seen by bitrate at that time and said its systems filtered the traffic without Wynncraft noticing. That is a historical, metric-specific record—not Cloudflare’s current all-time record.
What happened to Wynncraft?
Cloudflare’s Q3 2022 DDoS report says a Mirai botnet variant launched a multi-vector attack against Wynncraft, a Minecraft server. The traffic combined UDP and TCP floods and peaked at 2.5 Tbps. Cloudflare reported that it automatically detected and mitigated multiple attacks exceeding 1 Tbps during the quarter; it identified the Wynncraft incident as the quarter’s largest by bitrate.

Cloudflare also said Wynncraft “didn’t even notice the attack” because the company filtered it. That is Cloudflare’s account of the mitigation and customer impact; the available reporting does not independently verify the customer experience.
What does a 2.5 Tbps DDoS attack mean?
Terabits per second measures bitrate: the volume of data sent each second. It does not mean 2.5 trillion requests per second, nor does it state how many packets arrived each second. Requests per second, packets per second, and bitrate describe different dimensions of an attack and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The 2.5 Tbps figure is the reported peak bitrate. Cloudflare’s account does not establish how long the Wynncraft attack lasted, so the peak alone cannot show the total traffic sent over the course of the incident.
Was it really Cloudflare’s largest attack ever?
It was Cloudflare’s largest observed attack by bitrate at the time the company published its Q3 2022 report. It is not accurate to describe it as Cloudflare’s current largest attack ever: Cloudflare’s DDoS explainer identifies a 29.7 Tbps attack in Q3 2025 as the largest DDoS attack ever reported.

Other records use other measures. Cloudflare’s Q3 2023 reporting described a 201 million requests-per-second event as its largest attack seen in that HTTP DDoS reporting, while its Q4 2023 report described a separate 1.9 Tbps network-layer attack. Those figures are not direct like-for-like comparisons with Wynncraft’s bitrate record.
How did Cloudflare stop the attack?
Cloudflare says it automatically detected and filtered the attack traffic. That describes the reported outcome for a Wynncraft service protected by Cloudflare; it does not establish that every Minecraft host, network, or mitigation provider could absorb or filter a similar attack. The incident account does not give a detailed technical breakdown of the filtering rules or the attack’s duration.

What was Mirai, and why was it used against a game server?
Mirai is a botnet family associated with compromising vulnerable Internet of Things devices, including routers and cameras, and using them to generate DDoS traffic. Cloudflare’s retrospective on Mirai describes earlier attacks against Minecraft servers as well as the botnet’s evolution into variants and multiple operators. That background does not establish that the same people, infrastructure, or campaign were responsible for every Mirai-linked gaming attack.

How to read this incident alongside other DDoS reports
- Bitrate: data volume per second, expressed here as 2.5 Tbps.
- Packet rate: packets per second, a distinct measure that can describe network-layer load.
- Request rate: application requests per second, used for HTTP attacks and not comparable to bitrate without additional context.
- Attack vectors: Cloudflare says the Wynncraft incident combined UDP and TCP floods.
- Duration and impact: the reported peak does not reveal how long the attack lasted, and the claim that Wynncraft did not notice it comes from Cloudflare.
