What Apple Pencil Pro barrel roll does
Barrel roll means rotating the Pencil around its long axis, as though turning a pencil between your fingers. Apple says the Pencil Pro’s gyroscope enables rotation for “precise control of shaped pen and brush tools.” A tool designed with an angled tip, for example, can change the orientation of its mark as you roll the Pencil.

Apple’s WWDC24 developer session describes using roll angle in custom drawing experiences and says: “With barrel roll angle, strokes become more expressive.” The value is in making rotation affect the stroke itself—not merely adding a gesture to the interface.
Why roll is different from tilt
Rolling changes which side of the Pencil faces up; tilting changes the direction in which the Pencil points relative to the screen. Apple’s developer guidance discusses combining roll with azimuth—the Pencil’s directional angle—for more responsive behavior. How an app interprets those inputs depends on its implementation.

How this differs from iBeer
The likely reference in the title is iBeer, the early iPhone novelty app. A 2008 report by The Register described the app simulating a foamy beer being poured when the phone was tilted, using the iPhone’s accelerometer. That is a tilt example; it is not evidence that iBeer used a gyroscope.

Apple’s current App Store listing for iBeer still describes tilting the phone to drink and claims more than 90 million downloads. That figure is the listing’s claim, not an independently audited count.

Which iPads work with Apple Pencil Pro
Apple’s specifications list these compatible iPad models and require iPadOS 17.5 or later. Compatibility is model-specific, so check Apple’s current Apple Pencil page before buying.
- iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch (M4 and M5 models)
- iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch (M2, M3 and M4 models)
- iPad mini (A17 Pro)
Apple lists the Pencil Pro as 166 mm long, 8.9 mm in diameter and 19.15 g, with Bluetooth and magnetic attachment, pairing and charging. Those specifications identify the product; they do not establish battery life or comparative drawing performance.

Does barrel roll work in every drawing app?
No universal app support is established. Apple documents the capability for developers, but that does not mean every drawing app—or every brush within an app—uses roll angle. The feature matters only when the app and selected tool map rotation to the mark.
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines give a specific example: when highlighting in Notes, rolling the Pencil can rotate the angle of the mark. The guidance says barrel roll should modify marking behavior, rather than serve as navigation or reveal unrelated controls. For third-party tools, look for explicit Apple Pencil Pro roll support and details on how rotation affects the brush.

What to look for in a roll-aware tool
Apple’s developer session points to angled-tip tool simulations as a natural fit and recommends combining roll with azimuth for more responsive behavior. Developers should also provide a fallback for devices that do not support roll. In practice, an app’s implementation determines how noticeable and useful the input is.

- Does roll change the mark? The useful case is a change to stroke orientation or shape, rather than an unrelated interface action.
- Does the tool combine roll and direction? A tool may use both roll angle and azimuth to respond to how the Pencil is oriented.
- What happens without roll support? Apple’s developer guidance calls for a fallback on devices that do not provide roll.
