Yes—depending on your tablet, carrier, and region, you can send and receive text messages on a Samsung Galaxy tablet either by linking it to a compatible Galaxy phone or by using a tablet with active cellular service. The phone-linked option is usually the first one to try; a tablet with LTE or 5G hardware does not text independently unless it has active network service.

Availability depends on the device, carrier, and region. Samsung US says the phone-linked feature does not currently work with Verizon and AT&T phones, and may not be available on every model from other carriers. Check Samsung’s current US instructions and compatibility guidance; local support pages may differ.

Set up phone-linked texting with Call & text on other devices
Samsung calls this feature Call & text on other devices. It connects a compatible Galaxy phone and tablet so you can use the tablet to send and receive messages through the phone’s service.
- Sign in to the same Samsung account. Use that account on both the Galaxy phone and tablet, and make sure the phone has active mobile service.
- Enable the feature on both devices. Open Quick Settings and look for Call & text on other devices, or check Settings > Connected devices > Call & text on other devices. Turn it on for the phone and tablet. Samsung says they connect automatically after setup.
- Complete Google Messages setup if prompted. Samsung’s US guide says that when Google Messages is the phone’s default messaging app, you may need to open Google Messages on the phone, tap the profile icon, then go to Messages settings > Advanced > Text on Galaxy devices and turn on Allow Bixby and text on Galaxy devices. Google Messages on the tablet may ask you to sign in or pair; follow its on-screen instructions, which can include QR pairing.
Menu names and setup prompts can vary with software version and region. If the screen differs, follow the flow shown on your devices and consult Samsung’s local support page.

Use the tablet’s own cellular service
A compatible LTE tablet with an active SIM or eSIM and active network service can send and receive messages without relying on a linked Galaxy phone. Having LTE hardware alone is not enough: the tablet must have service, and the supported model and plan depend on the carrier and market. Samsung’s guidance does not establish a universal plan recommendation.
Understand Wi-Fi requirements for calls and messages
Samsung’s guidance distinguishes calls from messages. For Call & text on other devices versions higher than 3.3.00, the phone and tablet must be on the same Wi-Fi network for calls. Messages may work whether or not both devices share a Wi-Fi network. For Bluetooth tablets and LTE tablets without active service, Samsung also lists Wi-Fi connection, a Galaxy phone with active service, the same Samsung account, and the enabled feature among the requirements.

Account for Samsung Messages’ July 2026 change
Samsung US says Samsung Messages will no longer be supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher starting July 2026. Samsung also says this will disrupt Message Continuity, the Samsung Messages-based feature used to text on tablets, and directs users to Google Messages for continuing tablet texting. Troubleshoot a missing feature or failed setup
- The setting is missing: Confirm the exact phone and tablet models, carrier, and region support Call & text on other devices. Samsung says availability varies, including among models from supported carriers.
- The devices do not connect: Check that both use the same Samsung account, that the feature is enabled on each, and that the Galaxy phone has active service. For Bluetooth tablets or LTE tablets without active service, also verify Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Messages do not appear in Google Messages: Check the phone’s Google Messages setting under Messages settings > Advanced > Text on Galaxy devices, then complete any tablet sign-in or pairing prompt.
- Calls fail but texts work: If the feature version is higher than 3.3.00, check whether both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network; Samsung’s same-network condition applies to calls, not messages.
