Applicable 6th-generation Intel Core desktop i5 and i7 processors use the LGA1151 socket, but an LGA1151 label alone does not make a motherboard compatible. Intel lists 100- and 200-series chipset boards for these processor families and says 300-series chipset motherboards do not support 6th-generation desktop Core processors. Before buying or installing a board, confirm the exact CPU on that board’s manufacturer support list.
Which socket and chipset does a 6th-gen desktop Core CPU need?
Intel’s guidance for applicable 6th-generation Core desktop i5 and i7 processors identifies the LGA1151 socket and 100- or 200-series chipset motherboards. Check the exact CPU model and package: Intel lists some package variants separately, so a family name alone may not settle the question. See Intel’s Core i5 desktop processor information and Core i7 desktop processor information.

Why the socket label is not enough
Intel explicitly says 6th-generation desktop Core processors are incompatible with 300-series chipset motherboards, even though those boards may also be labeled LGA1151. Treat socket fit and electrical/platform compatibility as separate checks; do not select a board based only on the socket name. Intel’s LGA1151 installation guidance documents the 300-series incompatibility.
How to verify a candidate motherboard
- Identify the exact processor. Record its full model number and confirm that it is a desktop 6th-generation Core i5 or i7. Do not extend this guidance to all mobile or embedded 6th-generation processors.
- Check the chipset family. For applicable 6th-generation desktop Core i5 and i7 models, Intel lists 100- and 200-series boards; avoid 300-series boards.
- Open the manufacturer’s CPU support page for the exact board. Search for the processor model in the support list and check the board revision. Intel directs users to the motherboard manufacturer for board-specific confirmation; family-level guidance does not establish support for any particular board.
- Read the board’s update instructions. Check the manufacturer’s recommended firmware or BIOS update process and any prerequisites before purchase or installation. Do not assume a board can be updated in a way that enables a CPU unless its documentation says so.
- Confirm the rest of the build. Verify the memory type, cooler mounting and thermal/power requirements, board form factor, and features against the motherboard specifications.
Check memory and cooling separately
Intel lists DDR3L 1600 MHz or DDR4 2133 MHz memory support for its 6th-generation Core i5 family. Those are processor memory-support figures, not a promise that every LGA1151 motherboard accepts both memory types. The board determines which memory type and modules can be used, so check its specifications before reusing or buying RAM. Intel’s i5 support information includes the memory table.

Do not infer cooler compatibility from the socket name alone. Intel says fan-heatsink compatibility depends on matching the processor’s thermal and power requirements. Verify mounting and cooling support for the specific processor and board; Intel’s i7 desktop processor information provides its heatsink guidance.

Intel warns: “Improper installation can damage your processor and make it inoperable.” Follow the processor and motherboard manuals, ensure the CPU is seated correctly, and only then actuate the Independent Loading Mechanism lever. Use Intel’s LGA1151 installation instructions alongside the board manual rather than relying on socket appearance alone.

Quick compatibility checklist
- The exact CPU is an applicable 6th-generation desktop Core i5 or i7 model.
- The board’s exact CPU support list includes that model and matches the board revision.
- The board uses a supported 100- or 200-series chipset, not a 300-series chipset.
- The board’s memory type matches the RAM you plan to install.
- The cooler’s mounting and thermal/power support are confirmed for the build.
- You have followed the board maker’s update procedure and the installation manuals.
