There is no single set of ratings or design rules that applies to every Texas Instruments power module. The right answer depends on the exact part number and its datasheet. For example, TI specifies the LMZM23600 for up to 0.5 A, while the LMZ23608 is rated for up to 8 A; their input and output ranges differ too. Below are 11 common assumptions to check before choosing or laying out a module.
What the available evidence says about “11 myths”
A third-party page published under this title on April 29, 2026, describes its own tests, but the official TI materials cited here do not substantiate those reported measurements. Treat them as that publisher’s claims, not as verified TI results. The useful way to assess a supposed power-module myth is to check the exact device’s specifications and application guidance.

11 assumptions to check against the exact part
1. “All TI power modules have the same ratings.”
They do not. TI lists the LMZM23600 with a 4-V to 36-V input range and a maximum output current of 0.5 A. The LMZ23608 is specified for 6 V to 36 V input and up to 8 A output. A family name or general description cannot substitute for the individual product page and datasheet.
2. “A module’s input range is obvious from its family name.”
It is not. The LMZM23600 and LMZ23608 have different minimum input voltages: 4 V and 6 V, respectively. Confirm that the full expected input range—including relevant operating conditions—fits the limits for the selected model.

3. “The output voltage is always fixed.”
Not for every model or configuration. TI describes the LMZM23600 as available with an adjustable 1.2-V to 15-V output or fixed 3.3-V and 5-V options. The LMZ23608 product information gives an output range of 0.8 V to 6 V. Check the exact ordering option and datasheet requirements rather than assuming that another module’s output choices apply.
4. “Any module can supply the current my load needs.”
Current capability is model-specific. The LMZM23600’s listed maximum is 0.5 A; the LMZ23608 is listed for up to 8 A. These figures are product specifications, not a guarantee that every board can deliver the maximum under every thermal or electrical condition. Confirm the operating conditions and design limits in the datasheet.

5. “The input capacitor can go anywhere nearby.”
For the LMZM23600, TI recommends placing the input capacitor as close as possible to the module and connecting it directly to the VIN and GND terminals. That placement reduces the high-di/dt loop. The datasheet emphasizes that input-capacitor selection and placement matter in buck-converter design; use the selected part’s guidance rather than a generic layout rule.

Not necessarily. TI says the LMZM23600’s minimum and maximum output capacitance depend on the chosen output voltage, and excessive capacitance can affect startup. Select values using the exact datasheet’s requirements for the intended output configuration.

7. “A module never needs thermal analysis.”
Thermal limits depend on the device and the board. TI’s LMZM23600 datasheet relates package thermal resistance to board copper area and includes a worked example: for 24-V input, 5-V output, a 0.5-A load, 95°C maximum ambient, no airflow, and no added heatsink, it calculates a maximum package thermal resistance below 75°C/W and approximately 5 cm² of copper on a two-layer board. That is a specific example, not a universal heatsink rule or a target to copy to another module or layout.
8. “A thermal example proves every board will run cool enough.”
It does not. The LMZM23600 example depends on its stated input, output, load, ambient, airflow, heatsink, and board assumptions. A different copper area, layer stack, enclosure, airflow, or operating point changes the thermal problem. Use the datasheet’s method and validate the actual design against its operating conditions.

9. “WEBENCH replaces checking the finished design.”
TI’s LMZM23600 datasheet describes WEBENCH Power Designer as supporting design work with a customized schematic and materials list, and, in most cases, electrical and thermal simulations, CAD exports, PDF reports, and collaboration features. The documentation cited here does not say that simulations eliminate the need to verify a particular finished board.

Do not assume isolation from the word “module” or from the manufacturer’s name. The official materials reviewed describe non-isolated step-down DC/DC examples, and do not support a blanket isolation claim for these products. If isolation is required, verify it in the exact part’s datasheet and confirm that the documented safety and isolation properties meet the application’s requirements.
11. “An alternative part is automatically a drop-in replacement.”
TI lists TPSM365R6 as an active alternative to LMZM23600, while noting a different pinout and different input/current characteristics. “Alternative” therefore does not establish footprint or pin compatibility. Compare pinout, electrical range, package and footprint, external components, thermal path, lifecycle status, and application requirements before considering a substitution.

Start with the actual electrical and mechanical constraints, then use the datasheet for the candidate part. A useful comparison includes:
- Input-voltage range and expected transients.
- Output range, whether the option is adjustable or fixed, and required external components.
- Load current and the conditions under which the rating applies.
- Package, footprint, board copper and thermal path.
- Capacitor requirements, placement guidance, and startup behavior.
- Whether isolation is explicitly documented when the design needs it.
- Lifecycle status and the pinout and specifications of any proposed alternate.
For a concrete contrast, the following are the specifications stated on TI’s product pages; they are not independent performance-test results.

|---|---|---|---|
| LMZM23600 | 4 V to 36 V | Adjustable 1.2 V to 15 V, or fixed 3.3 V and 5 V options | 0.5 A |
| LMZ23608 | 6 V to 36 V | 0.8 V to 6 V | 8 A |
Where to verify the details
Use the product page to identify current product information and lifecycle status, then consult the datasheet for the exact device and configuration. TI listed the LMZM23600 and LMZ23608 as active in the product information reviewed in 2026; lifecycle status and web listings can change. TI also lists TPSM365R6 as an alternative to LMZM23600, but its different pinout means it should not be treated as a drop-in replacement.
