Sometimes—but it depends on what “lost” means. You may be able to restore access to a wallet or make an NFT reappear in a wallet app. If a transfer out of a self-custodial wallet has already completed, however, a wallet provider or marketplace generally cannot reverse it or return the token. A marketplace may restrict the item on its own service after a qualifying theft report, but that does not freeze the token on the blockchain.
First, identify what is actually missing
An NFT can be missing from your view without having been stolen. Separate four possibilities before taking action:

- Wallet access: You cannot open the wallet, perhaps because a device was lost or damaged.
- Wallet display: The wallet app no longer shows the NFT, but the address may still own it.
- Token ownership: A completed transaction transferred the NFT to another address.
- Artwork or media: The token remains associated with your address, but its linked image or other file is unavailable.
Check the exact wallet address and network in a block explorer, then review the token’s contract address, token ID, and transaction history. If the address still owns the token, the issue may be the app’s display or indexing rather than a transfer.

What recovery is possible in each scenario?

If you lost the device but still have your recovery method
For a self-custodial wallet that uses a Secret Recovery Phrase, restoring the wallet on a new device may restore access to addresses and assets associated with that phrase. The phrase is sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet. MetaMask says it cannot recover a lost phrase; some current MetaMask onboarding configurations can link a Google or Apple account, so recovery options depend on how that wallet was set up. Use only the wallet provider’s official app and recovery instructions. Never enter a phrase into a support chat, a website sent by a stranger, or a supposed NFT-recovery service.
If the NFT disappeared from your wallet app
- Confirm that the app is showing the correct wallet address and blockchain network.
- Look up that address in a block explorer and inspect the NFT’s transaction history. Check whether the address still owns the token or whether a transfer appears.
- If the address still owns it, use the wallet’s official instructions to refresh or manually import the NFT with its contract address and token ID.
MetaMask’s cited guide supports displaying ERC-721 and ERC-1155 NFTs; it says sending is supported only for ERC-721. Wallet support can vary by app and token standard, so a missing display does not establish that the token was transferred.

If your wallet was compromised but assets remain
MetaMask advises creating a fresh wallet on a clean device or profile, securing its recovery method, and ceasing use of the compromised wallet and addresses tied to the exposed phrase. Move remaining assets only when it is safe. If a sweeper script is watching the old wallet, newly added ETH or other tokens for gas may be taken immediately; do not fund it reflexively. Follow MetaMask’s hacked-or-scammed guidance and report the incident through appropriate official channels.
Do not share the replacement wallet’s phrase with anyone claiming to help. A new wallet protects assets you still control; it cannot undo a transfer already completed from the old one.

If an NFT was transferred or listed on OpenSea
OpenSea’s stolen-item policy, dated July 27, 2026, says a report must include a police report identifying the wallet address, the item identifiers or links, and a statement that the items were stolen. After review, OpenSea may disable qualifying items on OpenSea. Its standard restriction lasts up to 90 days unless law enforcement requests an extended hold. When the item is re-enabled, OpenSea says a disputed-ownership tag may remain for up to 12 months, with possible earlier removal based on purchase history. These periods describe OpenSea’s service policy, not an on-chain freeze: the token can still move elsewhere. Details: OpenSea’s stolen item policy.
OpenSea states that it cannot recover NFTs or funds transferred out of a wallet and cannot prevent activity through other marketplaces or direct blockchain interaction. If the item is listed elsewhere, use that platform’s official reporting process; do not assume a report will freeze the token on-chain. Preserve transaction IDs and token identifiers, and follow the relevant local law-enforcement process. A report or investigation does not guarantee that a particular NFT will be returned.

If the token is there but the artwork is missing
An NFT’s token and the image or other media it references are not necessarily stored together. The Congressional Research Service explains that many NFTs rely on off-chain files or metadata endpoints. If a host becomes unavailable, the artwork may disappear even though on-chain information still indicates ownership. That is a media-availability problem, not by itself proof of a token transfer. Protect yourself from fake recovery offers
After a theft, unsolicited “wallet fix” messages and recovery offers can create a second loss. OpenSea says it will not ask for a seed phrase or for ETH to resolve a support issue. Treat requests to reveal a recovery phrase, connect to an unfamiliar site, or send funds to unlock or recover an NFT as hostile. Contact platforms using their official support channels, not links sent in direct messages. OpenSea’s Web3 Security Guide covers related safety practices.

What to preserve when reporting a theft
- The affected wallet address and blockchain network.
- The NFT contract address, token ID, and item link, if available.
- Relevant transaction IDs and dates.
- Copies of communications or other evidence connected to the incident.
Do not publish or send anyone your private key or recovery phrase. Recovery outcomes depend on the facts, the platform involved, and any legal process; there is no universal guarantee that authorities or a marketplace can return a specific token.
