Neither setting should be treated as a universal delete switch, and the controls available can vary by account, plan, region, platform, and workspace.
What ChatGPT personalization can use
Depending on the account and available features, ChatGPT may personalize replies using saved memories, information from past chats, custom instructions, and—in some plans or regions—files or connected apps. Memory does not keep a complete transcript of every conversation. It selects information that may be useful and can change over time. OpenAI describes these capabilities and their limits in its Memory FAQ.

To review the controls, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on the version of ChatGPT, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, a memory summary, Manage, or saved memories. A summary is only a high-level view; it may not show every detail Memory can use.

You can delete individual saved memories or clear them in Memory settings. Deleting the chat where you originally shared something does not necessarily delete a separately stored memory. Likewise, turning Memory off does not delete chats already in your history. Review and remove saved memories separately from chat history if you want to manage both.

Personalization is not the same as model training
Memory controls whether information can be used to personalize responses. The model-improvement setting controls whether eligible content may be used to improve OpenAI models. OpenAI’s Data Controls guidance distinguishes these functions; changing one does not automatically change the other.
On a personal account, open Settings > Data controls, turn off Improve the model for everyone, and confirm if prompted. OpenAI says the setting applies across devices when you are signed in. New conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models after you opt out, but regular and archived chats can remain in your history. If you explicitly submit feedback on a response, the conversation associated with that feedback may still be used to improve models, even after you have opted out.

Opting out is not retroactive deletion: it does not erase conversation history or all information already stored. OpenAI also says limited safety and security uses of context may still occur in rare, high-risk situations.
What Temporary Chat changes—and what it does not
Temporary Chat is intended for a conversation that should not appear in chat history or create or update memories. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary. This is different from switching off Memory or changing the model-improvement setting for regular chats.

- Start a new chat and select Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized. The choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts.
- Check that your account or workspace permits the option; workspace or account restrictions take precedence.
Personalized mode may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; unpersonalized mode does not. The Temporary Chat controls and their qualifications are described in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
Temporary does not mean immediately erased. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and account-level settings apply. If a GPT uses an action, information sent through that action is also subject to the third party’s privacy policy.

The personal-account and workspace qualifications are set out in OpenAI’s model-improvement guidance and its business privacy information. Availability and exact labels can differ, so a control shown for one account may not appear in another.

Custom instructions can be edited or deleted for future chats. OpenAI says information from their use may be used to improve model performance, subject to the account’s applicable settings. If a GPT action sends information to an outside service, that recipient’s privacy policy—not just ChatGPT’s settings—governs what happens to the information it receives.

If you use a work, school, or other managed account, check the workspace policy or ask its administrator. Organization-level access, retention, and compliance rules can differ from personal-account controls, and the administrator may determine which options are available.
