Tesla Autopilot vs Full Self-Driving: Features, Limits, and Costs

Tesla Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) are driver-assistance features, not autonomous driving. Compare their stated scope, supervision requirements, U.S. price, and vehicle-specific eligibility.

Neither Tesla Autopilot nor Full Self-Driving (Supervised) makes a car autonomous: the driver must stay attentive and be ready to take control. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as handling a wider range of roads and maneuvers than its roadway-focused assistance features. In the U.S., Tesla’s support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month; the exact features and eligibility depend on the vehicle and market.

What Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) mean

Autopilot is Tesla’s name for driver-assistance capabilities that can include Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) and Autosteer. Depending on the vehicle and configuration, Tesla also offers navigation-related assistance. The name does not identify one identical package across every Tesla: features vary with model, trim, hardware, software, region, and vehicle configuration.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

TACC and Autosteer describe different kinds of assistance. TACC provides speed and following-distance assistance, while Autosteer provides steering assistance in supported circumstances. Navigate on Autosteer is another name that may appear in the manual and vehicle configuration. These labels do not mean every Tesla has every feature, or that the feature is intended for every type of road. The owner manual for the specific vehicle is the better guide to its capabilities and operating conditions than a general package name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FSD (Supervised) is Tesla’s route-oriented assistance offering. Tesla describes it as attempting to follow a route to a destination and handle driving tasks across a broader range of settings, including city and residential streets, turns, and intersections. Tesla also lists lane changes, parking, and Summon-related functions where supported. These descriptions indicate intended capability, not a promise that a maneuver will always work or finish without driver input.

Tesla’s owner-manual descriptions distinguish TACC, Autosteer, and Navigate on Autosteer as features intended for multi-lane roads with clear lane markings. That is a useful distinction from FSD’s broader stated scope, but it should not be treated as a universal feature list: consult the manual for the specific model and software version.

The word “Supervised” is important. It signals that FSD is assistance that requires an attentive driver, not permission to stop monitoring the road. Tesla’s product name does not override the warning in the vehicle manual, and a feature’s ability to attempt a maneuver does not mean the car will handle every condition safely or correctly.

Feature comparison

Question Autopilot and related assistance FSD (Supervised)
Typical scope described by Tesla Speed and following-distance assistance; Autosteer and navigation assistance in supported configurations and road settings. Route-oriented assistance across more varied roads, including city and residential streets, with turns and additional functions where available.
Road context The manual describes TACC, Autosteer, and Navigate on Autosteer for multi-lane roads with clear lane markings. Tesla describes use on a wider range of road settings; actual availability and behavior depend on vehicle, software, and market.
Driver’s role Remain attentive, responsible for driving, and ready to act. Remain attentive, responsible for driving, and ready to act immediately.
U.S. cost established here No single current price or bundle applies across every model and trim in the official material reviewed. $99 per month on Tesla’s U.S. support page, as of October 13, 2026; price and availability can change.
Eligibility Depends on vehicle, region, software, and configuration. Depends on vehicle, hardware, software, region, trim, model year, and account or ownership history.

The useful comparison is not “manual driving versus a self-driving Tesla.” Both columns describe assistance systems, and the driver remains responsible in both cases. Rather, the distinction is the scope Tesla describes: Autopilot-related features focus on speed, distance, steering, and supported roadway settings; FSD (Supervised) is intended to attempt more route-related tasks on a wider range of roads.

What FSD adds—and what it does not

A broader set of driving situations

The practical distinction is scope. The roadway-oriented features described in Tesla’s manual assist with speed, following distance, steering, and navigation on supported roads. FSD (Supervised) is described as extending route assistance to more varied settings, including city and residential streets, turns, and intersections. Depending on the vehicle and market, the offering may include lane changes, parking, or Summon functions.

A route-oriented system may attempt to do more than maintain speed or provide steering assistance on a suitable multi-lane road. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as attempting to follow a destination route and handle turns and intersections. Those descriptions help explain what the package is designed to attempt, but they do not guarantee a particular result. The driver still needs to watch the roadway and surroundings, judge whether the action is appropriate, and take over whenever needed.

Broader scope does not mean universal capability. A feature listed by Tesla may not be available on a particular car, in a particular country, or with a particular software configuration. Nor does the description guarantee a successful maneuver in every situation. The driver must monitor what the vehicle is doing and intervene when necessary.

Not autonomous driving

“Full Self-Driving” is a product name, not a statement that the car can drive itself without supervision. Tesla’s manual says the driver must watch the road and surroundings and be ready to take immediate action at all times. Responsibility for safe operation and compliance with traffic laws remains with the driver while assistance is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Model S Owner’s Manual makes the point explicitly: “Always remember that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (also known as Autosteer on City Streets) does not make Model S autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver who is ready to take immediate action at all times.” Tesla’s manual also states: “None of these features make Model S fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” These are Model S warnings, so check the manual for the exact vehicle you are considering, but the core point is clear: driver assistance does not transfer responsibility from the person behind the wheel.

Tesla’s manual identifies narrow roads with oncoming traffic, construction zones, complex intersections, blind corners, pedestrians, and bicycles as situations that warrant particular attention or may require intervention. Treat the system as assistance, not as a substitute for judgment, observation, or control. In practice, the presence of any of these situations is a reason to be especially attentive and prepared to take over, rather than to assume that the car will resolve the situation on its own.

How much FSD costs in the U.S.

Tesla’s U.S. support page lists FSD (Supervised) as a $99-per-month subscription as of October 13, 2026, and says it is offered by subscription rather than as an outright purchase on that page. Tesla notes that pricing and availability may change, so confirm the current price and eligibility in the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen before subscribing.

At that listed rate, the subscription is a recurring monthly charge, not a one-time payment. The price alone does not establish that a particular vehicle qualifies, that the feature is available in every region, or that no additional cost will apply. Tesla says a vehicle may need a separate prerequisite hardware upgrade before it is eligible. Check the particular car’s status and any upgrade requirement before comparing the subscription with the cost of a different vehicle or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscription can be canceled, but Tesla says the payment is not prorated. Access continues through the end of the current billing period. In other words, cancellation does not mean a partial refund for unused days, and access is not described as continuing indefinitely after the billing period ends. Review the current subscription terms at checkout because Tesla says terms and availability can change.

There is no single current Autopilot price or feature bundle established for every U.S. model and trim in the official material covered here. The features included with a particular vehicle can depend on its original configuration and subsequent software or account history. Check the vehicle’s software screen and documentation instead of relying on a general package name or an old price quoted elsewhere.

Historical one-time FSD purchase prices should not be treated as current offers. Tesla’s current support page lists a subscription, and the specific vehicle’s app or touchscreen is the practical place to check its displayed eligibility and price. A past price, a seller’s description, or another vehicle’s configuration does not establish what is available for the car you are considering.

Buying a used Tesla with Autopilot or FSD

Do not assume that an advertised FSD feature transfers with a seller’s account or that a previous subscription remains active for a new owner. Tesla says its FSD transfer program ended on March 31, 2026. A prior owner’s subscription does not become the buyer’s subscription. If FSD was purchased outright and was not transferred away, it may remain with the vehicle, but confirm the exact car’s software status and account details before treating that as included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters when comparing used vehicles. A seller may have used a monthly subscription, may have owned an outright-purchased entitlement, or may be describing a feature based on a past configuration. Those situations are not interchangeable. A former owner’s subscription is not a transferable entitlement for the buyer, while an outright-purchased feature may remain attached to the car if it was not transferred away. Because entitlement depends on vehicle and account history, verify the status of the exact vehicle rather than relying on a listing or verbal assurance.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • Ask the seller to show the vehicle’s software screen and available driver-assistance features.
  • Check the specific vehicle’s manual, model year, hardware, region, and current software version.
  • Confirm with Tesla whether the vehicle is eligible for an FSD subscription and whether it needs a hardware upgrade.
  • Verify that any claimed outright-purchased entitlement remains attached to the vehicle; do not rely on a previous owner’s subscription.

These checks are useful even when an advertisement uses a familiar label such as “Autopilot” or “FSD.” The label alone does not tell you exactly which capabilities are available, whether the software is currently enabled, whether the car qualifies for a subscription, or whether a past owner’s account history affects access. Have the seller demonstrate the car’s current status and confirm uncertain details with Tesla before making the purchase decision.

How to decide which one fits

Choose based on the driving assistance you want

If your main interest is speed, following-distance assistance, or steering support on roads where the vehicle supports those features, check the Autopilot capabilities included with the specific car. If you want Tesla’s broader route-oriented assistance, including its described city-street and residential-street functions, check whether FSD (Supervised) is available for that vehicle and market.

Do not choose based only on the promise of convenience. The broader stated scope of FSD comes with the same essential driver obligation: remain attentive and ready to take control. Consider whether the feature’s actual availability on your vehicle, the subscription terms, and the situations in which you must intervene match what you expect. A wider set of attempted maneuvers is not the same as hands-off or autonomous operation.

Check the car, not just the name

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Note its model, trim, model year, region, and software version.
  2. Review its software screen. Confirm which features are currently enabled or available for subscription.
  3. Read the vehicle-specific owner manual. Confirm the feature’s intended operating conditions and warnings for that model.
  4. Check eligibility and total cost. Confirm the current subscription price, billing terms, and whether a hardware upgrade is required.
  5. For a used vehicle, verify entitlement. Establish whether an outright-purchased feature remains with the car; a previous owner’s subscription is not a transferable entitlement.

Use the car’s own software display and manual together. The app or touchscreen can show the features and subscription status offered for that vehicle; the manual explains intended operating conditions and warnings. Neither a generic Tesla feature page nor a seller’s account history should replace checking those vehicle-specific details. If something is unclear, confirm it with Tesla rather than budgeting on an assumption.

Limits, legal responsibility, and safety claims

Feature availability and behavior can vary by country, vehicle, hardware, software, configuration, and regulatory approval. Tesla’s terms state that features may change and depend on development and regulatory approval. Availability in one market does not establish availability or equivalent behavior in another. A description on a U.S. support page should therefore not be assumed to apply without change to a Tesla in another country.

The same caution applies within a market. Two cars with similar model names may differ in model year, configuration, hardware, software version, or account history. A feature description for one configuration is not proof that another vehicle can use it. Check the specific vehicle and its current software screen before relying on a capability, and consult the corresponding owner manual for operating conditions.

Tesla has also made a product-page claim that FSD (Supervised) is “7x Safer Than a Human Driver When FSD (Supervised) Is Engaged,” qualified against the estimated U.S. average. That is Tesla’s claim; the material available here does not establish an independent study or provide enough methodology to treat the figure as independently verified. It should not replace a driver’s assessment of the system’s limits or the obligation to supervise it.

Do not turn that marketing comparison into a general guarantee about safety, a prediction for an individual trip, or evidence that supervision is unnecessary. The claim is attributed to Tesla and compares against an estimated U.S. average; it is not presented here as an independently validated statistic. Regardless of the claim, the owner-manual warnings and the driver’s responsibility remain in force.

The safest way to understand the feature is to follow the operating conditions and warnings in the specific vehicle’s manual, remain engaged whenever assistance is active, and be prepared to take over. No feature name or route capability removes the driver’s responsibility.
