Meta says information submitted to its generative AI features may be retained, used to personalize replies, shared in limited cases with trusted search partners, and used to improve products or train models. Meta also says ordinary private messages with friends and family are not used for training unless someone in the conversation chooses to share them with an AI feature. The company describes deletion controls, but its published material does not establish one worldwide retention period or a universal training opt-out.
The explanations below describe Meta’s stated policies and product behavior, not an independent audit. Settings, eligibility and regional rights can change, so check the current Privacy Center and notices inside the feature you are using.

Start with the data route, not the app name
“Meta AI” can appear in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, business chats and hardware. The privacy answer depends mainly on how information reaches Meta:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| What you share | How it reaches Meta | What Meta says may happen | Main control or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| A prompt, image or file sent to an AI feature | You deliberately invoke Meta AI or a business AI | Used to answer you, personalize the conversation, improve products and, in some cases, train models; selected questions may go to trusted search partners | Use the feature only for information you accept being processed; chat-reset controls are available in described apps |
| Ordinary private messages with friends or family | Normal messaging without an AI request | Meta says these are not used for training unless someone chooses to share them with an AI feature | Do not invoke an AI feature on messages you want to keep outside that pathway |
| Public Facebook or Instagram posts | Published to an audience beyond the private chat | Meta says public posts, including text and images, have been used as training data; EU announcements also cover adult public content | Audience settings and any region-specific objection process |
| Camera-roll suggestions | An optional feature scans or suggests content from your phone gallery | For the announced rollout, Meta says the suggestions are private to you and those photos and videos are not used to improve AI unless you publish or share them in an AI interaction | Opt in or turn the feature off; availability is regional |
| Media captured on AI glasses | Saved to the glasses gallery until you import it | Meta says gallery media remains on the glasses until you choose to import it, then you decide whether to share it or use it with Meta AI | Keep it on the glasses, control imports and use the capture indicator |
This separation prevents a common mistake: the presence of an AI button does not mean every message, photo or video in the surrounding app has automatically been submitted to the AI.

Does Meta AI use my prompts to train its models?
Meta says information people share while interacting with its generative AI features—including Meta AI and business AI features—can be used to improve its products and for other purposes. That wording is broader than “the model trains on every prompt.” It means you should treat an AI submission as information provided to Meta for processing beyond the immediate answer.
Meta says information in a conversation may be retained to provide more personalized responses or relevant information in that conversation. It also says certain questions may be shared with trusted partners, such as search providers, when that helps produce relevant, accurate and up-to-date answers. A question that contains a name, location, account number or other identifying detail can therefore leave the original chat context when a search-partner handoff is needed.
In a September 27, 2023 explanation updated November 21, 2025, Meta’s Director of Product Management Mike Clark wrote: “The AIs may retain and use information you share in a chat to provide more personalized responses or relevant information in that conversation, and we may share certain questions you ask with trusted partners, such as search providers, to give you more relevant, accurate, and up-to-date responses.” The statement does not provide a single retention period for all consumer prompts.

Meta’s public explanation also says its training sources include publicly available online information, licensed data and information from Meta products and services. For the generative features announced at Connect in 2023, Meta said publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts—including photos and text—were included, while private posts were not. That training-source statement is separate from the handling of a prompt you submit today.

Can Meta AI see my photos?
Only photos you make available to the relevant feature should be treated as AI-submitted. Uploading an image into a Meta AI conversation, asking the assistant to analyze an image, or sharing a photo in a chat where an AI is invoked gives the feature access to that item for the interaction and the related processing Meta describes. A photo that simply remains in your phone gallery is not automatically a Meta AI prompt.
Camera-roll suggestions are a specific, opt-in feature
Meta’s April 16, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, describes camera-roll suggestions in the European Union and United Kingdom, with expansion to Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Uruguay. Meta says the feature is opt-in, suggestions are private to the user, and its camera-roll photos and videos are not used to improve AI at Meta unless the user publishes or shares them in an AI interaction. Those conditions apply to that feature and rollout; they are not a blanket promise about every way an image can reach Meta AI.
Photos and video captured on AI glasses
Meta’s July 2026 glasses FAQ says gallery photos and videos captured by the glasses remain privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. After import, the wearer decides whether to share the content elsewhere or use it with Meta AI. The glasses use a capture LED while recording gallery photos or video, giving people nearby a visible recording signal.
Does Meta use my private messages to train AI?
Meta says it does not train its AI models on private messages with friends and family unless someone in that conversation chooses to share those messages with an AI feature. This is an important boundary, not an absolute “private messages are never used” rule. The exception was explicitly added or clarified on November 21, 2025.

For example, forwarding a private exchange to Meta AI, asking the assistant to summarize messages, or invoking an AI feature on content in a private chat changes the data route. Keep the original messages outside an AI interaction if you do not want that exception to apply.
Meta also says that when a person asks Meta AI to join a group chat, the AI reads only messages that invoke @Meta AI or replies that invoke it. It does not read other messages in that group, according to Meta’s stated product behavior. Meta further says using a Meta generative AI feature does not link WhatsApp account information to a user’s Facebook or Instagram account information.
How are public posts different from AI prompts?
Public-post training and prompt handling are two distinct pathways. Meta said in 2023 that public Facebook and Instagram posts, including images and text, were part of the data used to train the models behind the generative features announced at Connect. A post can therefore be in a training dataset because it was public, even if its author never opened Meta AI.

Meta says those interactions may be used for product improvement and other purposes, may be retained for personalization, and may involve automated systems and human review. Changing a post from public to a narrower audience can affect future access, but it does not establish that a model has forgotten information already incorporated into training.

What the EU announcements add
In an April 14, 2025 announcement, Meta said it would train AI at Meta in the European Union using adults’ public content, such as public posts and comments, and people’s interactions with Meta AI, including questions and queries. The announcement was updated March 27, 2026 to clarify that private messages are not used unless someone shares them with an AI feature. Meta says public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 is not used for training and that EU users can object to public-data training through a form.
Those are EU-specific statements. They do not establish the complete current set of rights, objection routes or training practices in every other country. Use the location-specific notices and controls Meta presents for your account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can people at Meta read my Meta AI conversations?
Meta says automated technology and people review interactions with AI to improve performance and reduce the likelihood that personal information shared with an AI feature appears in outputs to others. This describes a review practice, not a claim that a person reads every conversation. Meta’s published explanation does not set out a complete sampling rate, reviewer-access schedule or universal storage period.
Because review may occur, avoid placing secrets, passwords, financial account details, medical records or another person’s sensitive information into an AI prompt unless you have a clear reason and permission. Redaction before submission reduces exposure while preserving the useful part of a question.

Can I delete my Meta AI chats?
Meta says people can delete information shared in AI chats across Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp by typing /reset-ai. The command and surrounding menus can change, so confirm the current instructions in the app or Meta’s Help Center before relying on a particular tap sequence.
- Open the Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp conversation that contains the Meta AI interaction.
- Enter
/reset-aiin the chat and send it. - Read the confirmation and any scope information shown by the app; repeat the process in other AI chats if the interface treats conversations separately.
- Review account privacy tools for additional access, download or deletion requests.
Resetting a chat is a deletion control for information in the described conversation. It is not a promise that every copy, safety record, search-partner result or model parameter changes instantly.
Deleting voice recordings from AI glasses
Meta’s responsible-innovation FAQ says users can delete voice recordings with Meta AI glasses. It states that once the information itself is deleted, it will not be used for future training. The same explanation cautions that model behavior does not change immediately when a data item the model learned from is deleted. Removing source information and reversing learned model behavior are different outcomes.

Can I opt out of Meta AI training?
There is no single worldwide opt-out established by the official material described here. Meta documents a specific objection process for EU public-data training, alongside its explanation that EU AI interactions and adult public content may be used for training. The form and eligibility are regional; they should not be presented as a global control for prompts, private messages, images or every model.
Meta’s general privacy-tools page offers ways to access, manage, download and delete personal data, plus two-factor authentication for account security. Those tools help manage personal information and account access, but they are not a universal AI-training opt-out.
For any account, check the current Privacy Center, the notice shown when you enable an AI feature and the controls offered for your country. A control that applies to public posts may not apply to a prompt you voluntarily submit, and an opt-out for one feature may not govern another.
A safer way to use Meta AI
- Minimize the prompt: remove names, exact addresses, account numbers, faces and identifying document details when they are not needed.
- Check the destination: look for whether you are messaging Meta AI, a business AI or a normal contact before sending.
- Separate private-chat content: do not invoke an AI feature on messages you intend to keep outside the stated training exception.
- Review image permissions: understand whether you are uploading one image, enabling camera-roll suggestions or importing a glasses gallery.
- Use audience controls: treat a public post as potentially usable for model development, subject to the rules and objections available in your region.
- Reset when appropriate: use
/reset-aifor supported Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp AI chats, then check the confirmation. - Secure the account: enable two-factor authentication and review logged-in sessions so someone else cannot invoke AI features under your account.
What is still not established?
Meta’s statements do not supply one retention duration for all prompts, a percentage of interactions reviewed by people, or a complete country-by-country map of training objections outside the EU. They also do not promise that deleting a prompt instantly removes every effect from a model. Treat those as open limits of the published explanations rather than filling them with assumptions.
