Choose a dedicated server if the world must remain available while its owner is offline, players keep different schedules, you are running a recurring community, or you need a persistent modded world.
The practical dividing line is not graphics quality or game content. It is ownership of the running world process: Host & Play ties the session to one player’s Terraria client; a dedicated server runs that world separately and can continue without any particular player connected.

Host & Play
Host & Play is the multiplayer option built into the normal Terraria client. The Official Terraria Wiki describes it as the simplest way to play multiplayer and says it suits in-home LAN sessions and short online co-op games. You start Terraria, choose Multiplayer → Host & Play, select an existing world or create one, and optionally set a password.
Your game client is both the player and the host. The world is available while that hosting session is running. When the host exits the game or loses the session, other players cannot continue in that world independently. In practical terms, friends cannot log in while you are offline because there is no separate process keeping the world online.

Dedicated server
A dedicated server is a separate Terraria server program. It can run on another computer, a spare machine, or a cloud instance and does not need the graphical game client. The Official Terraria Wiki explains that a server can run on a separate computer with no graphical requirements and without requiring any particular player to remain connected.
Players connect to the running server as clients. The operator selects the world, controls the server process, manages access, and decides when to restart or stop it. If the machine and server process remain available, friends can join at different times, including when the person who created the world is not playing.

Side-by-side comparison
| Decision axis | Host & Play | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest start | Built into the Terraria client; select Multiplayer → Host & Play, choose a world, and optionally add a password. | Requires a separate server program, world selection, configuration, and a running server process. |
| Does the usual host need to stay online? | Yes. The multiplayer session is tied to the host’s game process. | No particular player must stay connected while the server process is running. |
| Best fit | Short co-op sessions, home LAN play, and small groups with a predictable host. | Persistent worlds, rotating schedules, recurring communities, and access while the owner is away. |
| Networking effort | Steam invitations can reduce manual networking for compatible desktop players. LAN, direct-IP, and other connection methods still have their own requirements. | Residential NAT may require router port forwarding. Firewalls and cloud-provider security rules must allow the chosen server port. |
| Administration | Start the session, select a world, set a password, and close the game when finished. | Operate a separate process; handle configuration, permissions, restarts, backups, updates, and network exposure. |
| Scale | Well suited to a few simultaneous players who are coordinating a session. | Better for a persistent group or community. The default maximum is 16 players, and that limit can be changed at startup or in serverconfig.txt. |
| Modded play | Convenient for a small, coordinated group that can keep identical mods and versions. | Better for a persistent modded world, provided every client and the server use the same enabled mods, versions, and load order. |
| Ongoing resources | Uses the host’s game computer only while someone is playing. | Uses a machine or cloud instance for as long as the server is running. No universal CPU, RAM, bandwidth, latency, or monthly-cost threshold applies to every world. |
Which option fits your situation?
Two to four friends playing for a few hours
Use Host & Play unless you already operate a server. It avoids a second installation and separate administration, and everyone can join the same session when the host is available. A password is appropriate for a private world.
Friends play at different times
Use a dedicated server. The world can remain online after the owner disconnects, so another player does not have to wait for the original host to open the game. This is the clearest case in which a dedicated server is worth the extra setup.
A recurring group or larger community
Prefer a dedicated server and treat it as an operated service rather than a one-click game session. Plan who can start and stop it, how players are granted access, when the world is backed up, and how updates and restarts are communicated. The tModLoader multiplayer guidance also positions dedicated hosting as the advanced path for 24/7 servers or larger player counts.

A small modded campaign
Either mode can work. Host & Play is simpler when everyone plays together and can troubleshoot at the same time. A dedicated server becomes more useful when the campaign should stay open between sessions. In both cases, mod compatibility is mandatory: every participant must use the exact same enabled mods, matching versions, and matching load order.

You cannot configure your home router
Host & Play may be easier if the chosen invitation method works without manual router changes. For a dedicated server, consider a network design or managed hosting arrangement that does not require you to change the household router. Verify the provider’s current Terraria version, mod support, backups, security controls, and pricing yourself; the official documentation establishes the port-forwarding issue but does not endorse a particular provider.
How to start a Host & Play world
- Open Terraria. Use the regular game client on the computer that will host the session.
- Choose the multiplayer path. Select Multiplayer → Host & Play.
- Select or create a world. Pick the existing world your group should use, or create a new one.
- Protect the session. Set a password when the world is private or when invitations alone are not sufficient.
- Invite the group. Use the connection method available to your platform and friends. Steam-based invitations can minimize manual networking for compatible desktop players; LAN and direct-IP arrangements have different network requirements.
- Keep the host session running. Friends remain dependent on the host’s game process. Closing Terraria ends their access to that session.
Host & Play is not a background service. Leaving the computer at the game menu, suspending it, or closing the client does not create an always-on world for later access.
How to plan and operate a dedicated server
1. Choose the machine and operating environment
The server can run on a separate computer because it does not need Terraria’s graphical interface. It can be a machine in your home or a cloud instance. The sources do not establish a single hardware specification that guarantees a particular player count or mod pack; requirements vary with vanilla versus modded play, world activity, operating system, player count, and hosting location.
2. Install the server software that matches your clients
Use a server build compatible with the Terraria version your group will run. For modded play, use the appropriate tModLoader server tooling and keep its version aligned with the clients. The tModLoader documentation describes Linux/server management utilities; it also states that ARM support does not currently exist for tModLoader or its dedicated server. An ARM machine therefore is not a supported choice for a tModLoader dedicated server at the time covered by that documentation.

3. Select the world and configure startup
Launch the dedicated server program, choose the world to load, and set the server options requested by the startup interface. If you want repeatable launches, place those choices in serverconfig.txt. The default maximum is 16 players; you can change the limit during startup or in that configuration file.
4. Set the network port
Terraria’s dedicated server uses TCP port 7777 by default, according to the Official Terraria Wiki server guide. You may choose another port, but the server setting, router rule, firewall rule, and connection details supplied to players must all agree.
5. Allow traffic through every relevant firewall
On a home network, forward the selected TCP port from the router to the computer running the server and allow the server application through the computer’s firewall. On cloud infrastructure, open the corresponding port in the provider’s firewall or security-group settings as well as in the operating system firewall. Opening a router port without allowing the traffic on the host machine, or opening a cloud rule without configuring the operating system, leaves the path blocked.
6. Test locally before inviting everyone
First connect from the server machine or the same local network, then test from an outside network. A local success confirms that the process and world load; an outside success confirms that address translation and firewall rules are correct. If local players connect but remote players cannot, investigate the router, public address, and perimeter firewall rather than reinstalling the world.
7. Establish an operating routine
- Keep a written record of the world file, server version, port, mod collection, mod versions, and load order.
- Back up the world before major updates, mod changes, or experiments.
- Schedule restarts when the group is not playing and announce maintenance times.
- Stop the server through its supported shutdown procedure so the world can save cleanly.
- Limit administrative access and share the connection details only with intended players.
Do you need to port-forward a Terraria server?
Often, yes, for a self-hosted server behind a residential router. Port forwarding maps incoming traffic on the router to the internal computer running Terraria’s server process. The default TCP port is 7777, although the server may be configured to use another port.

Port forwarding is not a universal requirement for every multiplayer arrangement. A Host & Play session using a platform invitation system may avoid manual router configuration for compatible players. A LAN session stays inside the local network. A server on a cloud machine uses the provider’s firewall and security settings instead of your home router, but those rules still must permit the server port.
Do not publish a router port casually. Use a strong world password, keep the operating system and server software updated, restrict administrative access, and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer operate the server. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work even when the router appears correctly configured; use a reachable network design or managed service instead.
Persistence, administration, and player access
What happens when the owner is offline?
With Host & Play, the world is unavailable once the hosting client stops running. With a dedicated server, the world remains available while the server process and its machine remain online. The owner does not need to be one of the connected players.
Who is responsible for restarts and backups?
Host & Play places that responsibility on the person who starts the session, but the task is mostly limited to reopening the game and selecting the world. A dedicated server creates an ongoing operational role: someone must monitor the process, apply compatible updates, perform backups, manage permissions, and recover from a crash or host outage.
Does a dedicated server automatically support more players?
No. It changes how the world is hosted, not the game’s rules or the quality of an internet connection. The dedicated-server default is 16 players, and the limit is configurable. Actual stability depends on the world, mods, activity, network path, and machine; the available documentation does not provide a universal performance benchmark.

Modded Terraria: the synchronization rules
tModLoader’s multiplayer documentation states that all players must have the exact same mods installed and enabled. Matching only the names is insufficient when versions or load order differ.
A reliable mod workflow
- Create a canonical mod list for the campaign, including each mod’s version.
- Record the enabled order and distribute the same list to every player.
- Install and enable that list on the server and on every client.
- Restart after changes rather than mixing old and new sessions.
- Test the world with one client before inviting the full group.
- Back up the world before adding, removing, or updating a mod.
Host & Play is usually easier for a small modded group because everyone can resolve a mismatch together. A dedicated server is more suitable when a modded world must be available continuously, but it does not remove the synchronization requirement. A player with one missing mod, a different version, or a different load order can fail to connect or encounter inconsistent behavior.
Common problems and the right fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Friends cannot join a Host & Play session | Invitation or network method is incompatible, or the host session is not running. | Confirm the host is still in the world, resend the invitation, and verify whether the group is using Steam, LAN, or direct-IP connectivity. |
| Friends could join yesterday but not today | The host’s local address changed, a firewall rule changed, or the dedicated process is stopped. | Confirm the server is running, verify the configured port, and recheck router and operating-system firewall rules. |
| Local connection works; remote connection fails | NAT, port forwarding, public-address, or perimeter-firewall issue. | Check that the router forwards the selected TCP port to the correct internal machine and that cloud or ISP restrictions are not blocking inbound traffic. |
| Server starts but players are rejected after a mod update | Mod versions, enabled sets, or load order no longer match. | Compare the recorded canonical list with both server and client installations, then restart all participants with the same set. |
| The server cannot run on the chosen ARM machine | tModLoader and its dedicated server do not currently support ARM. | Use a supported architecture for the modded server or run an unmodded setup that does not depend on tModLoader. |
| The world appears to have rolled back | The process or machine stopped before a clean save, or the wrong world file was loaded. | Use the supported shutdown procedure, confirm the configured world path, and restore the newest known-good backup. |
Can you switch from Host & Play to a dedicated server?
Yes. The important asset is the world file, not the hosting mode. Stop the Host & Play session cleanly, make a backup of the world, place or select that world in the dedicated server’s world location, and test it privately before inviting the group. For a modded world, reproduce the same tModLoader version, enabled mods, versions, and load order on the server.
Keep the original backup untouched until players have confirmed that inventories, buildings, progression, and mod-dependent content load correctly. Switching modes does not make incompatible mods compatible, and it does not automatically solve router or firewall configuration.
Cost and hardware trade-offs
Host & Play has no separate server process to keep online; the host’s existing game computer is used during play. A dedicated server consumes a machine or cloud allocation for as long as the process runs. That can mean electricity and maintenance for a home machine or a recurring hosting charge for a cloud service.

Verdict
For a predictable, small co-op session, Host & Play is better because it is immediate and imposes almost no server administration. For a world that must survive the host’s absence, a group with different schedules, a recurring community, or a 24/7 modded campaign, a dedicated server is better despite the extra work. Decide first whether persistent availability matters; that single requirement usually determines the right Terraria hosting mode.
