Usually, “Failed to place all <LocationName>, placed X out of Y” is a world-generation warning, not a server crash. Valheim tried to distribute a location type across the map, but fewer areas met that location’s biome, terrain, altitude, and spacing rules than the requested target. If the server finishes loading, reaches Online, and players can join, the message is normally harmless. Investigate only when startup never completes or the warning matches a location that is actually missing in gameplay.

What the “Failed to place all” line means
Valheim generates locations such as caves, camps, structures, and other points of interest according to rules attached to each location type. The generator has a target quantity, then searches the world for candidate positions. A candidate is accepted only when it satisfies the location’s requirements. If the search ends before the target is reached, the console records a partial result.

How to read the message
LocationName: the internal prefab or location type being processed. A mod can use a name that is unfamiliar to players.X out of Y: how many locations were placed compared with the requested target during that generation pass.Failed to place all: the generator did not find enough valid positions. It does not, by itself, say that the server executable stopped or that the world file is corrupt.
For example, Failed to place all VV_SilverCave, placed 5 out of 50 means that five candidates were accepted while the generator could not find 45 more that met that location’s rules. A result of placed 0 out of 50 means no valid position was found in that pass; it is not an automatic diagnosis of a broken installation.
Why the target cannot always be reached
The placement checks can include:
- the world biome being eligible for that location;
- ground that is sufficiently flat or otherwise shaped as required;
- an altitude range that the location supports;
- a minimum distance from similar locations or other points of interest; and
- enough remaining candidate terrain after the other rules have been applied.
The More World Locations AIO FAQ describes these checks as the reason a requested spawn quantity may remain incomplete. A target is therefore an upper goal for that generation pass, not a promise that the map will contain exactly that many copies.
When the warning is normal and when it needs attention
Use the server’s final state and the in-game result—not the presence of one console line—as the first test. The following distinctions prevent unnecessary world resets.
| Situation | What it usually indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| First startup, many placement warnings, server reaches Online | Normal progress while a new world is being generated | Wait for completion, then join and test the world |
| Later startup, world already exists, server reaches Online | Existing world loaded; old placement messages may not represent a current failure | Confirm players can connect and that expected content is present |
| Warning names a modded location, but players see no gameplay problem | The mod’s target count was only partially achievable | Follow that mod’s documented generation behavior; do not apply a vanilla fix automatically |
| Server never reaches Online | A startup problem may exist in addition to the placement warning | Inspect the surrounding console output and the server control panel for the first fatal or repeating error |
| Players can join, but a required location or feature is absent | The shortfall has a visible gameplay effect | Identify the exact location type, its biome rules, installed mods, and the world’s exploration state before changing the world |
There is no documented universal percentage at which a partial count becomes “bad.” A zero can be acceptable for one location type and significant for another, depending on whether the location is optional, modded, or required for the world’s intended gameplay.

A new dedicated server must generate the world before it can accept normal play. The first launch can take several minutes, and the console may scroll many Failed to place all ... lines during that period. BESTNET-GSERVER’s setup guidance describes those lines as normal generation progress and advises waiting for the control panel or console to report the server as Online. Once the world exists, subsequent starts are normally faster because generation is no longer starting from scratch.

First-start checklist
- Start the server once and leave the process running. Do not stop it merely because placement warnings appear.
- Watch for the final status. Use the control panel’s Online indicator or the equivalent ready message in the console as the completion signal.
- Wait through the initial generation period. A burst of warnings is expected while the map is being assembled; the count of lines is not a progress percentage.
- Connect with a test player. Confirm that the server accepts a connection, loads the character, and permits normal movement.
- Check the specific feature named in the warning only if it matters to your setup. A modded location may be optional, while a required quest or resource location may need further investigation.
Stopping the process halfway through generation makes it impossible to tell whether the warning was routine or whether startup genuinely failed. Let the first run reach a stable status before deciding that corrective action is needed.
Why “placed 0 out of 50” can appear
A zero count means that, in that generation pass, the search found no candidate area satisfying all of the location’s constraints. It does not reveal which constraint was decisive. A location intended for one biome may find no eligible terrain if the world has little of that biome in suitable shapes. A strict altitude or flatness requirement can eliminate otherwise correct-biome areas, and spacing rules can reject sites that are too close to locations already placed.
For a modded location, the name may also indicate a configuration or generation expectation that differs from vanilla Valheim. The example VV_SilverCave comes from mod documentation and should be treated as mod-specific evidence, not as a standard vanilla location or a universal error code.

A safe troubleshooting workflow
Work from the least destructive checks to the most involved. Keep a backup of the world before changing generation settings, removing a mod, or using a tool that edits world data.
1. Confirm the server’s actual state
If the panel says Online and a player can join, the placement line alone is not a reason to rebuild the world. Record the exact location name and count, then test the gameplay feature that matters. If the server remains in a starting, loading, or restarting state, continue reading the console around the warning; the first fatal message or repeated exception is more useful than the placement line itself.
2. Identify whether the location is vanilla or modded
Look at the internal name and your installed mod list. A name that belongs to a location pack, custom dungeon, or other mod must be diagnosed using that project’s instructions. Mod documentation can impose additional requirements about when locations are generated, where they can appear, and whether an existing world must be rescanned.

3. Check whether the problem is visible in play
Join the world and determine exactly what is missing. “The console printed a warning” is different from “the required dungeon cannot be found.” Note the biome in which the feature should appear, whether nearby terrain has been explored, and whether other locations from the same pack work. This information separates a harmless target shortfall from a content-generation problem.

Some mod documentation explains that newly added locations can be generated in unexplored areas of an existing world. The same guidance notes that heavily explored worlds may need additional tooling. That behavior is not a universal rule for every mod or for vanilla locations, so follow the instructions for the exact location pack. Do not assume that restarting the server will populate already explored terrain.
5. Apply only the documented mod procedure
If the mod’s author specifies a command such as genloc, use it only in the context and version described by that mod. The command is presented in the mod documentation as a way to generate added locations in unexplored areas; it is not a general repair command for every Valheim server. Read the mod’s syntax, permissions, backup requirements, and limits before running anything.

6. Re-test after each change
Change one variable at a time—such as a mod configuration or generation pass—then restart, wait for Online, and test in-game. If several mods or settings are changed together, you lose the ability to identify which change affected placement and make rollback harder.
Cases that require different handling
Vanilla server with successful startup
For an unmodified server that reaches Online and allows normal play, leave the world intact. The generator’s inability to meet every target is an expected consequence of finite, rule-constrained terrain. Continue only if a location that players actually need is demonstrably absent.
Vanilla server that never becomes online
Treat the placement message as a clue observed during startup, not as proof of the root cause. Capture the full console sequence, including messages immediately before and after the warning. Look for a separate fatal error, a crash loop, or a service-level problem in the hosting panel. The available documentation does not establish that a particular placement count causes a crash, so do not infer one from 0 out of 50 alone.
Modded server with missing content
Check the location pack’s compatibility notes and generation instructions first. Verify that every required dependency is installed on the server and clients where applicable, and confirm that the world was generated or rescanned under the mod’s supported procedure. A mod can intentionally request more locations than a particular map can accommodate, or it can require unexplored terrain for new placements.
Existing world after adding a location mod
Do not expect a normal restart to rewrite every explored area. The mod’s instructions may target unexplored regions or provide a generation command. If the world is heavily explored, the documentation may recommend another tool or workflow. Back up the world before attempting it, because world-editing operations can affect existing progress.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping the first startup immediately: the initial warning burst can be normal, and interrupting generation prevents a valid completion test.
- Equating a partial count with corruption: the line reports placement shortfall, not file integrity.
- Using a mod command on a vanilla world: commands documented for a location mod are not universal Valheim administration commands.
- Regenerating before identifying the missing feature: a new world can discard established progress while leaving the underlying biome or spacing limitation unchanged.
- Judging by the count alone: no documented threshold defines a universally unacceptable percentage; server status and gameplay evidence matter more.
Practical decision guide
Use this sequence whenever the line appears:
- Is this the first launch? If yes, wait for generation and the Online status.
- Can a player join? If no, investigate the complete startup log for a separate failure.
- Is anything actually missing? If no, record the warning and continue using the world.
- Is the named location modded? If yes, read that mod’s generation instructions and check exploration requirements.
- Is the world heavily explored? If yes, determine whether the mod supports generation in unexplored areas or requires another tool.
- Before any destructive change: back up the world and make one documented change at a time.
The reliable interpretation is therefore conditional: “Failed to place all” describes an incomplete placement target. It becomes an operational problem only when startup fails to complete or the incomplete placement corresponds to missing content that your server is supposed to provide.
